I think this could serve as a good repository for news bits we hear from OTA's. I'll let Nick Scurfield start us off with 5 things to look for (I guess, hear about for us) during OTA's:

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/a...ans-OTAs/57852011-a8cb-459d-8691-605856f220ca

Nick Scurfield said:
Here are five things to watch in Texans OTAs (organized team activities), which begin on Monday at the Methodist Training Center.

The Texans will have 10 practices in OTAs (May 20-21, 23 and 28-30 and June 3-6), followed by a mandatory mini-camp from June 11-13.

1. Hopkins: Rookie wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins made a strong first impression in rookie mini-camp last weekend, but that was against other rookies, many who were with the Texans on a tryout basis.

Now, the first-round draft pick from Clemson will be practicing with Andre Johnson, catching passes from quarterback Matt Schaub and going against cornerbacks such as Pro Bowler Johnathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson.

The Texans expect Hopkins to make a significant contribution from the get-go as a rookie. He showed “extremely special” ball skills in the rookie mini-camp. The Texans would certainly like to see more of the same as Hopkins practices with his veteran teammates.

Brooks Reed healthy for OTAs after groin surgery

Texans linebacker Brooks Reed is “100 percent” after January groin surgery and was able to work out ahead of the beginning of the club’s organized team practice activities, Reed told Dave Zangaro of CSNHouston on Sunday.

Reed told CSNHouston.com he has been lifting weights and running in the last three weeks.

“It shouldn’t be anything to worry about,” Reed said. “It happened in the past and got over it. Worked hard rehabbing it so we’re at 100 percent right now and looking to improve during OTAs.”

QB Matt Schaub missed OTAs last year b/c of his 2011 Lisfranc injury. He's fully healthy this time around #Texans

Brian Cushing (knee) and Ed Reed (hip) will not participate in OTAs. T Derek Newton (knee) also out w/ injury #Texans

James Palmer ‏@JPalmerCSN 45m
Brooks Reed says that he'd prefer to play ILB. Added that how much he plays there will be up to how the rookie LBs play.#texans

PDS ‏@PatDStat 35m
Darryl Sharpton was a full go today at OTAs. Moved well without any issues. #Texans

PDS ‏@PatDStat 32m
Roc Carmichael looked the best out of the DBs. All over the field breaking up passes. Good start for him. #Texans

PDS ‏@PatDStat 29m
Trevardo Williams and Sam Montgomery looked good. Williams showed he can play in space and Montgomery has some strength to him. #Texans

Brian Cushing: "I’ll be ready for the 1st game of the season, and I'm pretty sure I’ll be ready for the 1st practice come training camp."

Lots of teaching going on. Andre Johnson said it seems like [DeAndre] Hopkins is thinking a lot right now, which is normal for rookies. #Texans

James Palmer ‏@JPalmerCSN 8m
Earl Mitchell looked really good. Strong, quick, lean but big. Underrated last year. #texans #texanstalk

Whitney Mercilus' arms are bigger than his legs and conditioning looks great. #strongerThanMe #texans #texanstalk

2 young players Gary Kubiak said look "very impressive": DE Delano Johnson and rookie T David Quessenberry #Texans

Other:

J.J. Watt -- no elbow brace
A.J. -- hit weights offseason, looks bigger
Posey -- ahead of schedule, helping out coaches

Some more twitter stuff:

DeVier Posey (Achilles) was at practice helping #Texans WR coaches. Kubiak: "He’s ahead of schedule, whatever that schedule is."

PDS ‏@PatDStat 33m

Wasn't the only one that noticed but Andre Johnson looks like he hit the weight room hard this offseason. Made his "Dre" like catches today.

PDS ‏@PatDStat 25m

#Texans are not fullback deficient. Jones, Clutts and Boren all fit the definition.

PDS ‏@PatDStat 37m

Talked to Tim Jamison said he had no offseason spent the entire time rehabbing his torn Achilles. Is close to returning. #Texans

Neither of these makes sense. OLB's rarely want to move to ILB. Wade said just a week ago that Sharpton hadn't been cleared for any activities. Now he is full go?

Okay well I don't think Palmer is just making up quotes or that other people who attended the practice are lying.

More twitter stuff:

Also one Player I forgot to mention is Jared Crick. 6-4 and now 295 lbs. went full beard/ lumberjack look. #Texans

Brennan Williams said he could only participate during some of today's OTAs. He expected to be able to go but ended day with ice on knee.

Day 1 but he looks better. RT @jay_dale: I hear Terrell McClain is out there trying to win NT job.

OK, let me be the Texans Talk OTAs correspondent.

There should be a quote sheet on Brooks coming out. I only heard part of the interview but it sounded like he was willing to do anything the team wanted him to do, and that he was working at ILB because they know that they could move him back to OLB and he'd be cool. I didn't get the impression he was dying to play ILB, but I only heard part of comments.

Sharpton looked fine. They are going to limit him from doing special teams stuff, but he was doing drills, on-field stuff. That was the surprise of the day. Much better than showing up and finding there was a surprise surgery on a key player like has happened in the past. (IOW, very nice to see Andre Johnson doing his Andre thing).

Dobbins I didn't see out there, nor do I think there is a quote on him. Do not want to speak out of turn though. So many interviews going on at the same time it is hard to catch them all until quote sheet comes out.

My Twitter feed has a bunch of OTA comments: @StephStradley

Good stuff, keep it coming! :)

Andre bigger, that's a scary thought :)

I'm not sure that Andre looked bigger to me. He looked like Andre.

PR said that the weights listed on roster sheet were accurate. Andre listed at 229 on roster sheet which is pretty much his normal 230 figure that is usually given for his weight.

Houston Texans Transcripts
Head Coach Gary Kubiak
Organized Team Activity Session #1 – May 20, 2013
(Transcribed by Zac Emmons and Charles Hampton)

Head Coach Gary Kubiak
WR Andre Johnson
OLB Brooks Reed
QB Matt Schaub
DE J.J. Watt

Head Coach Gary Kubiak
(on the status of OLB Brooks Reed) “He’s fine. Brooks has been fine for two-and-a-half, three months, so he’s doing good.”

(on the status of ILB Darryl Sharpton) “Sharpton’s good. He’s back to work today. We’re kind of going to be a little protective with him, keep him out of some special teams drills and stuff, but he’s back to work. (CB) Brice (McCain) is back to work on kind of a temporary basis. Other than that, those other guys are still out. Y’all know who they are, Cush (ILB Brian Cushing) and those guys.”

(on the status of ILB Brian Cushing) “He’s fine. He’s doing great. He’ll be ready to go. Our goal has been training camp the whole time. If it was up to Cush, he’d be out here today, but we’ve got to do it right.”

(on the status of S Ed Reed) “He’s doing really well. The expectations are for him to leave Colorado at some point this week, from a rehab standpoint, but yeah, it’s going good.”

(on how he plans to handle the roster and depth chart at inside linebacker) “I think the most important thing right now is that we get these young guys in position to rep. (OLB) Brooks (Reed) is repping inside right now, so that lets (OLB) Sam (Montgomery) and (OLB) Trevardo (Williams) rep with the first and second groups and (OLB Bryan) Braman rep with the first group, so I think right the key is that we just get them all going. We can settle them down. Brooks can always move, but we wanted to make sure these young guys stayed in one spot so we could really evaluate them.”

(on whether OLB Brooks Reed and ILB Darryl Sharpton are practicing at the same inside linebacker position) “They’re opposite inside, as of today. It’s going to change from day to day, but we know that Brooks can line up outside and play tomorrow if we opened the season, so we’re very concerned about getting him his reps inside from that standpoint.”

(on OLB Brooks Reed) “He’s fine. He’s a really sharp player, and he’s got a bunch of it from phase two of the (offseason) program, he got a bunch of reps in there, so we just think it’s best that if he’s going to get a ton of reps in the OTAs (Organized Team Activities), so to speak, it’s better off for him getting them somewhere he hasn’t played, because we always know he can go back.”

(on the importance of having QB Matt Schaub during Organized Team Activities this year after not having him in 2012) “I nearly forgot about last year, that he had missed the whole thing. He’s got a good season under his belt totally healthy, and obviously he comes back out here, he’s had a good offseason. He’s getting pushed by (QB) T.J. (Yates) and (QB) Case (Keenum), and that’s a good thing. Having him work full-time with the team, that’s important. There are going to be certain guys that are going to get some breaks; you’re going to see me sit some older guys as we go through this thing, but it’s good to have him back full-speed.”

(on the importance of having QB Matt Schaub throwing to the young receivers on the team) “Well, first off for the young buck, for (WR) DeAndre (Hopkins), we put him with the first group. That’s tough duty, but what happens is he’s not only getting coached by us; he’s getting coached by Matt in the huddle, he’s getting coached by (WR) Andre (Johnson) in the huddle, so that’s the best thing for a young player like that. Put him in an environment where he’s getting help from players as well as coaches, so it’s been a step in the right direction.”

(on how WR DeAndre Hopkins looked in his first practice with the full team) “I thought he was fine. I think first off he was better, mentally. He’s been through it a couple times, and just the speed of these guys – like today, they just watch how our guys work and how fast they practice, how they talk, how they’re so much into what they’re doing. So it’s a big shock for these young guys, but the key is for the next 10 days to get them all comfortable with their teammates and what we’re doing so that they can compete come summertime.”

(on what steps they have taken to improve the team’s special teams units) “Well, we got (Special Teams Coordinator) Joe (Marciano) some help, which I think was important. In this business, it seems like there’s a coach and an assistant for every dang position nowadays, and Joe’s been doing it by himself for a long, long time. So we had an opportunity to get Lig (Assistant Special Teams Coach Bob Ligashesky) in here and help Joe out, so I think that’s a big plus. Obviously, we think our team’s getting more athletic with some of these young guys that can run, so any time you get faster as a football team or special teams, you get better.”

(on the progress of the rookie defensive linemen on the team) “(NT Chris) Jones is doing fine. He struggled a little bit that weekend that we got together. It was a little bit different for him being in a 3-4 type situation and us playing him in a couple of different spots. He looked a little better to me today. (DE) Delano (Johnson), I’m thinking of him being a young player, he’s been very impressive this offseason. There will be plenty of reps to go around; I’ll rest (DE) Antonio (Smith) some, (DE) J.J. (Watt) some throughout this course, and we’ve got plenty to look at.”

(on the rookie offensive linemen) “First off, the number three (T Brennan Williams) is a little behind. He’s got a little issue with his knee. We’re trying to get him healthy and get his physical conditioning up with the rest of the team. Quiz (T David Quessenberry) is really very impressive right now. He’s smart, played all over the place in (rookie) mini-camp and handled it. He’s going to get a ton of reps at right tackle now with (RT Derek) Newton and the Williams situation.”

(on the status WR DeVier Posey) “He’s doing good. He’s doing really good. I think he’s ahead of schedule, whatever that schedule is. I think the big key to him will be when we go to (training) camp, is he a PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) guy or is he somebody that looks like he’s going to be ready early in the season. I don’t know. Right now he’s doing good, though.”

(on what are realistic expectations for WR DeVier Posey at this point) “I don’t really know. I know his goal is to make it hard on us to put him on PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) once camp starts, so that’s a good thing. He’s working hard.”

(on if windy conditions are the best challenge he can give to punt returners) “You must have been watching. It wasn’t very good today. It’s tough, and Lech (P Shane Lechler) kicks a tough ball to catch, especially down there inside the 50 where he was kicking, so we’ll keep working a lot of people, but today was about as tough as it gets.”

WR Andre Johnson
(on his thoughts on WR DeAndre Hopkins after his first practice) “He did good. You could kind of tell that he’s thinking a lot when he’s playing, but that’s part of being a rookie. He’s picking up everything pretty well. He went and made some plays today and that’s a good thing. I think day-by-day, he’ll continue to get better and better.”

(on if he is looking forward to playing with WR DeAndre Hopkins) “Definitely. We have a lot of talent at the wide receiver position. All of the young guys are very talented. I think they’re going to help us out a whole lot.”

(on if he provided any advice to WR DeAndre Hopkins today) “We’ll go in and watch the practice and stuff. I’ll talk to him from there. He sits next to me in the meeting room. I’ll tell him what I see.”

(on how he felt to be back on the field for Organized Team Activities) “I wasn’t really looking forward to it, but football is back. It just seems like the offseason goes by so fast and then you’re right back at it. It was a lot of fun and it was great to be back out here.”

(on having QB Matt Schaub on the field for Organized Team Activities compared to a season ago) “It’s great to have everyone healthy. I couldn’t tell you the last time I did OTAs, so I’m happy just to be back out here with my teammates and everything is feeling good.”

OLB Brooks Reed
(on whether he is moving to inside linebacker) “I’m not 100 percent switching positions, but I’m trying to learn another position. It’s coming along. I’ve been in the playbook a lot, picking up little things. Cush (ILB Brian Cushing) played the position, so I’m always asking him things, but I’ll get the hang of it.”

(on what he picked up when he played inside linebacker briefly in 2012) “Just to be patient. As the SAM (strongside) linebacker when I was playing the first couple of years, you’re full-tilt, you’re going, but in the middle positions you’ve got to be more patient because you’ve got to shuffle in between players more.”

(on whether there is more thinking involved playing on the inside) “A little bit. Your eyes have got to be better, and that just takes discipline and repetition.”

(on how ILB Darryl Sharpton looked in practice) “He was good. By the end of the year, everyone is beat up. He knows what to do, he’s a smart guy, and obviously physical, so he’ll do a great job.”

(on how he feels about playing inside linebacker) “I like it, and I hope they keep me there, but it doesn’t really matter where they put me – at SAM (strongside) or middle – I’ll do both to the best of my ability.”

(on whether the coaches have told him whether he will be playing inside or outside) “Be prepared for either way, and it all kind of depends on what these new draftees do, so we’ll see. It’s just a matter of time.”

(on whether he can make it a moot point by playing great at inside linebacker) “I expect myself to be the best out there, but at the end of the day it’s their decision to keep the best 11 on the field.”

QB Matt Schaub
(on working with rookie WR DeAndre Hopkins) “It’s great. He’s been out here now since rookie minicamp for a week now, so just a great attitude, great work ethic. He’s just absorbing the whole offense. He’s getting thrown in there with us in the first group, and you can just see the talent and the ability that he brings to the table, so we’re definitely excited and it’s been good to start working with him.”

(on how much WR DeAndre Hopkins can help the offense) “He’s such a dynamic player and the run after the catch, the ability to go up and get the ball; he’s just going to bring an added dimension to our offense.”

(on taking motivation from the way the 2012 season ended) “Whenever you’re not the last team standing at the end of the day, that’s motivation to get back at what you’ve been doing and start working toward next season. Last year is in the past, and this is the time to get better individually and as a group, and if we all get better by a little bit, we’ll be right where we want to.”

(on the offense becoming more dynamic as young players begin to step up) “We definitely will be. When you add in a lot of young talent that brings a lot of ability, you’re excited for what they can do. And going into year two and year three, that’s when you see a lot of guys make the most progress and the biggest jump, so definitely excited to see those guys come out here and get back to work.”

(on whether he has changed anything in his preparation for this season) “Well, I’ll say this year not having to rehab like I was last year with my foot injury is a big plus, because I can get started right after the season getting ready for this year. It’s motivation to be the last team standing this coming year, so it was obviously a disappointment the way we ended, but it’s fuel to the fire.”

(on how he feels) “I feel great.”

(on practicing with WRs Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins) “It’s great. I’ve been working with Andre now for going on seven years, so it’s like riding a bike when it comes to our relationship and how we operate on the field, but with DeAndre’s ability and what he brings to the table and how hard he’s working to just immerse himself into the playbook, you can just see that once he gets it and once he’s in there and doesn’t have to think and can just play, it’s just going to be a big help to us.”

(on what he expects WR DeAndre Hopkins’ learning curve to be) “Well, there’s obviously a learning curve, but when you get right in there and you’re with the first group from day one, and all the meeting time we’re going to have and all the extra time on the field, he’s going to be ready. We’ve got four months til we play, so we’ve got a lot of time.”

(on the importance of WR DeAndre Hopkins practicing with the first team) “I think so. He’s in there, he’s proving himself to all the veterans. In our offensive huddle, we have guys who have been together now five, six, seven years and we’ve been in a lot of battles together. When you have a young guy that comes in and he just jumps in there and starts making plays and shows that he belongs, that’s the ultimate sign of respect for him and older guys notice that. So he’s got a ways to go, but we’re looking forward to his work and what he can do for us.”

(on whether WR DeAndre Hopkins did anything to impress him in the first practice) “It’s only day one out here, but you see that he’s not got the ‘deer in the headlights’ look. He’s ready to go and is very positive and just works hard.”

(on how RB Arian Foster looked) “It’s ahrd to tell on the first day, but he looks fine. He’s Arian – he’s a hard worker and he’s going to be ready to go, but he takes care of himself well.”

Not to be greedy
but....
Are you planning on posting any avatar-worthy snapshots...? (hint, hint...)
:D

For the first time ever, I asked a player for a avatar snapshot, and they asked not to do it. Which is sort of silly because I can take all sorts of pictures they don't pose for, but OTOH, I'm not sure I'd want to pose for a pic after practice because ugh, hot.

Then was running around asking questions so didn't get one.

Here's the Brooks Reed quote on ILB:

(on how he feels about playing inside linebacker) “I like it, and I hope they keep me there, but it doesn’t really matter where they put me – at SAM (strongside) or middle – I’ll do both to the best of my ability.”

Neither of these makes sense. OLB's rarely want to move to ILB. Wade said just a week ago that Sharpton hadn't been cleared for any activities. Now he is full go?

It's good to hear that Sharpton made it through a grueling non-contact day.............without tearing something..................:kitten:

I am still impressed with Hopkins and his ability to pick up the offense. He is always asking questions and looked good in routes.

Was surpised to see Sharpton ready to roll in OTAs. Good sight for the #Texans to have him full speed on day #1.

Brooks Reed at ILB today.. (Article below)

http://www.csnhouston.com/football-houston-texans/talk/reed-hopes-texans-keep-him-inside

Greg Jones said "He has to get used to the details in the zone" that Coach Kubiak and Coach Harris are teaching him with the #Texans.

Jones said lining up against the Jaguars "Is going to be different, but he is looking forward to it." #Texans

Sam Montgomery "Say he gets excited to play football when the team's come together, really likes it." #Texans

Jamison also added "He had some unfinished business from last season." #Texans

Happy to hear this!

Keshawn Martin called his first year a "learning experience",feels better about the playbook and more mentally prepared for the NFL. #Texans

Duane Brown said he still has the same strength, feels much quicker and faster than last season. He lost 7 lbs. in the offseason.

Also one Player I forgot to mention is Jared Crick. 6-4 and now 295 lbs. went full beard/ lumberjack look.

only UDFA rookie that looked good was AJ Bouye.

Wasn't the only one that noticed but Andre Johnson looks like he hit the weight room hard this offseason. Made his "Dre" like catches today.

Talked to Tim Jamison said he had no offseason spent the entire time rehabbing his torn Achilles. Is close to returning. #Texans

Hopkins and Swearinger rightfully looked like men among boys during rookie mini-camp, but the talent they're surrounded changes now.

Arian Foster looks much better this year. Looks like he too lost some weight. Looked good cutting and in drills. #Texans

Hey this J.J. Watt guy looked good out there today. One to watch. #Texans

Whitney Mercilus looks like the offseason did him some good. Looks like the weight room was his friend. #Texans

Trevardo Williams and Sam Montgomery looked good. Williams showed he can play in space and Montgomery has some strength to him. #Texans

Roc Carmichael looked the best out of the DBs. All over the field breaking up passes. Good start for him. #Texans
WOW!

Martin caught the ball well and looked good for being day one of OTAs. #Texans

Keshawn Martin was disappointed how his season and the teams season ended last year. Feels much more prepared this year. #Texans

All I got, enjoy, all!

This was posted to the Texans site, it's a .doc file unfortunately so I'll c/p:

Thanks for the post! I normally read this at HT.com but it being provided here gives us good talking points.

I still cannot believe no one, including Schaub, has admitted to Schaub having a crippling painful injury that he played through during his poor stretch of performances at the end of the season. It's just crazy...or is it? Lol!

Seem to remember Carmichael looking like Tarzan in past OTAs then looking like Jane on Ambien when it counted. Hope the Jungle is kinder to him this year.

Agreed but for what it's worth CB's improve by seasons. KJax looked like a bust for the 1st 2 seasons but looks like a strength on our defense now.

Also, just incase anyone hasn't read Stephanie's article, i'd take a look.

OTA's Day 1 via Stephanie Stradley..

http://blog.chron.com/texanschick/2013/05/day-1-texans-2013-ota-report-houston/

The Texans tight end position looks excellent….wave after wave of TE do your job guys. It’s like they have some sort of tight end cloning technology. Rookie TE Ryan Griffin caught my eye in a few plays. I do not think that the offense will miss James Casey, though he may find himself in a better role with the Eagles.

Sam Montgomery looked much better than this mini-camp debut a couple of weeks ago. He looked strong and more in tune with what the coaches were asking him to do. He showed his ability to dissect plays and had two quarterback sacks, if this was game speed. Montgomery has taken some big steps as an outside linebacker in less than two weeks. It should be fun to watch to see where he ends up by the end of training camp.

Drafted rookie outside linebacker Trevardo Williams impressed on his first day of OTAs. He showed his ability to drop in space and today tipped a pass for a Brandon Harris interception. Williams looks like he can play the Sam or Will position for the Texans, and looks like he could be a good late pick for the Texans.

Both great articles.

Seem to remember Carmichael looking like Tarzan in past OTAs then looking like Jane on Ambien when it counted. Hope the Jungle is kinder to him this year.

Roc had some nice plays but I didn't personally think he looked like the best of the DBs.

At OTAs, we all have different vantage points and things we are focusing on. So we all notice different things--maybe more so than us noticing different things in games. The Texans have the good fortune of having everything on camera from various angles, and position coaches focusing on their guys.

I must go now. My daughter walked in and has asked me to put the dancing cow smilie on this reply. Later y'all.

I'm surprised this has not been mentioned:

(on how he plans to handle the roster and depth chart at inside linebacker) “I think the most important thing right now is that we get these young guys in position to rep. (OLB) Brooks (Reed) is repping inside right now, so that lets (OLB) Sam (Montgomery) and (OLB) Trevardo (Williams) rep with the first and second groups and (OLB Bryan) Braman rep with the first group, so I think right the key is that we just get them all going. We can settle them down. Brooks can always move, but we wanted to make sure these young guys stayed in one spot so we could really evaluate them.”

Braman's not repping with the second group at all. Does that mean something, or is he just being used as a stand-in?

I'm surprised this has not been mentioned:

If Reed is ILB, then Mercilus and Braman are the only OLB's with game experience.

Trevardo Williams and Montgomery are both rookies, I doubt we should look into it that far yet.

I still cannot believe no one, including Schaub, has admitted to Schaub having a crippling painful injury that he played through during his poor stretch of performances at the end of the season. It's just crazy...or is it? Lol!

Don't expect Schaub to ever mention any injury or pain as an excuse. He's played through a lot of injuries in his career and I don't think he's ever used them as excuses.

All you have to do is look at how he moved at the beginning of the season compared to how he moved at the end of the season. He did not appear to be planting at the end of the year like he was at the beginning of the year. Given the injury he'd suffered the year before, that's not surprising.

Really glad to hear that Sharpton is doing good, I did not think he would be as mobile as described. To me that is the best news out of everything I read.

:cow:

Please keep an eye on Sharpton. If he is mobile and looks good he could wind up starting on day one and keep Reed on the outside IMO.

Early in OTAs, they do agility drills. If you didn't know he had a problem last year, you wouldn't know. He looked fine.

Of course, with all these guys, you can't tell how they will hold up until real game stuff.

Some injuries are unavoidable, but some players are able to play at a high level and not let injuries keep them off the field. It's the reason why older players aren't necessarily worse players than younger ones--if they've been able to stay in the league, maybe they may be better at maintaining their body than unproven guys.

The difficulty with this linebacker group both inside/out, is that there is little track record of these guys holding up with a lot of snaps. Some of it is just that they are noobs, but the two LBs with the most snaps for the Texans last year were Bradie James and Connor Barwin, both gone.

So just because the linebackers haven't held up in the past, or that there are new guys, doesn't mean they can't have a solid 2013. But they will certainly be tested because the Texans don't have a big NT that keeps the linebackers cleaner--they are required to clean up after the chances that the defensive line take to go after the QB.

Really good post, thanks. I especially agree with your assessment in the last 2 paragraphs.

LZ's first day impressions:

Musings from the Texans’ first day of OTAs

I was excited to be back out at the Texans practice fields to watch some practice football. Don’t get me wrong, I know that we’re in May and that there are no starting positions won or lost in May. One element of OTAs that always fascinate me is the players weights since it will sometimes give you a glimpse of who is taking the offseason seriously and who might not be. Now keep in mind that some players will gain or lose weight according to what the team is looking for them to do. It is also worth noting that many of these players can see their weight fluctuate within the course of two to three weeks. Here is a look at which players were noticeably bigger and smaller at the start of OTAs this year versus where they were last year.

Hopkins said he bruised his knee in his collision with Harris. Said he missed 5 plays and is fine.

Kubiak says B. Harris is doing ok after colliding with Hopkins over the middle. Trainers worked on Harris for a few min B4 he walked off.

Kubiak said after practice that DeAndre Hopkins was fine after collision. He completed practice. Looked fine after.

QBs had an overall rough day. Poor center to QB exchanges. Some work to be done. #Texans

Rookie ILB Ja'Gared Davis had a nice interception of a tipped pass today. #Texans

DeAndre Hopkins looks so confident catching the football. Makes one handed catches look so easy. #Texans

Jeff Maehl has been probably one of the most consistent WRs to this point. Has caught everything thrown his way. #Texans

Brooks Reed's transition to the inside is interesting. Seems very natural for him. Cushing was coaching him up today. #Texans

Rookie cornerback A.J. Bouye keeps making plays on the field. Did it in rookie mini camp and now first 2 days of OTAs One to watch. #Texans

Watched Jared Crick closer today. Built better now for the run, probably will help at NT in a pinch. Overall strength has improved. #Texans

Stephen McGee threw the ball well today. Yates and Keenum had their moments. Position battle to watch. #Texans

Ryan Griffin took advantage of his time today. Big target and caught some tough passes today, few drops, but best he has looked. #Texans

Couple things from today. Keshawn Martin had a nice day. Ran sharp routes and caught the ball well. #Texans

Montgomery did have a much better showing in day two. looked quicker and less gassed. Maybe the back was slowing him more than we think.

Sam Montgomery told me that he thinks he got pushed around a bit on day 1 of OTAs. Said he thought about it all night last night.#TexansTalk

"He has great size & great hands, he can defiantly make the tough catches." Jackson on Hopkins. Added he's only covered him a few times.#Texans

"he's flying around out here and he's catching on quick. It's going to be exciting." - Kareem Jackson on DJ Swearinger.

#Texans fullbacks are Greg Jones (6-1 268 lbs.) Tyler Clutts (6-2 254 lbs.) and Zach Boren (6-0 255 lbs.)

Montgomery does a good job playing disciplined on the backside of a play. Two days in a row where a bootleg would have been a sack. #Texans

Sam Montgomery knows one speed. Today when Jeff Maehl tried to block him, Sam literally moved him with ease. (Picked him up.)

My brother JJ Moses told me at church last week that Matt Schaub looked leaner and more muscular to him when they did an event together. I'm interested to see how Schaub performs this year.

Kubiak: ‘Third Round Pick Way Behind At OTAs’

HOUSTON (CBS Houston) Brennan Williams is getting some attention at OTAs and not in a positive way. On Monday after the first day of OTAs, head coach Gary Kubiak showed some concerns over Williams’ progress. The third-round draft pick out of UNC suffered a knee injury on May 11 during the second day of mini-camp and did not return. An MRI cleared his knee of any major issues, but the offensive tackle is still suffering lingering effects.

“(Williams) is way behind. He’s got a little issue with his knee. We’re trying to get him healthy and we gotta get his physical condition up with the rest of the team,” Kubiak said in a press gathering after OTA practice on Monday.

Very astute observation, Brisco County. Why yes, this could mean something according to Gary Kubiak. (Seriously good post, man. You should post more often. I'm actually kinda blown away.)

(on OLB Bryan Braman) “It’s been good. Obviously, he’s getting a chance to work with the starters right now. Usually when guys get put in those positions because of Brooks (Reed) moving or whatever, it’ doesn’t matter, but when guys get put in those situations, you’ll see them flourish and take off. It’s interesting to watch him right now. He was good yesterday and I’ll go back and watch him today. Here’s an opportunity to say, ‘Brian, can you start? Can you be a starter in this league?’ So we’re going to give him a chance throughout OTAs to see how far he can come.”

Link.

OK, I asked two questions specifically for y'all today. From the Kubiak transcripts:

(on speculation that S Ed Reed might miss the first week of the regular season) “I don’t go off speculation. We know what we know. He had the surgery. Everything went well. He went through the process of staying in Colorado which was part of the deal, part of the rehab process. Now, he’s supposed to be turned loose this week. Everything that we know is on schedule and our expectations are to look at camp at some point and be ready to go at the opening of the season. Other than that, I can’t comment on that.”

The second question was actually, "How is Bryan Braman's progress so far?"

Pretty much got the answer I thought I was going to get with the second question. Which isn't much.

On the first question, he answered more than I thought because usually he defers on injury stuff. But I figured that since a lot of the talk last week was the speculation that he would be gone week 1 of the season, figured I should give him a chance to say something.
