Kubiak: Collin Klein will get a chance at QB @ rookie minicamp

Former NFL quarterback Jake Plummer, who Kubiak coached in Denver, has been working with Klein.

“We’ll see how much Jake has been able to teach him in a short period of time,” Kubiak said. “(Klein’s) a winner. Done a great job in college, so we’ll see.”

I've been wondering when and under what context that name would pop up again.

He is a developmental project. He has the speed and strength to make plays with his feet but he needs to work on his technique and delivery if he's ever going to succeed in the NFL as a QB.

Aaron Rodgers had an extremely odd delivery when he was drafted at 24th overall but was able to learn and develop with the coaches and is now arguably the best QB in the game.

Could Klein have the same results? Most likely no, but there is room to dream. :cow:

A possible mobile QB? What is that? I hope the makes the cut. He's a good athlete hopefully he can be a good nfl QB too.

At least he has chance to work with right coaching staff for a developmental QB.

We'll need to see how far Keenum has come first. If Keenum has really improved from year 1 to 2 then i'll feel a lot better with Klein's chances. I know Kubiak likes his QB projects but we have to see how far that project has come before we can know if Klein is in the right hands.

Klein has the attributes and is honestly a better passer than Tebow but just needs to put it all together.

Big physical, winning leader who flashes Cam Newton core strength, heck yeah I'd take a flyer on him high reward low risk.

This. No cost for test driving. Love to be able to trade Yates & Schaub 2014 (or cut)& go with Collin & Keenum even if we still draft a QB high.

Some people are amazing.

Get rid of the Probowl and playoff winning QBs and hand the franchise over to 2 guys that nobody wanted, that can't make the game day roster because its a conspiracy. Smh.

Is there a special handshake or something to get into the draftnik pot store?
No but people in the legal profession are usually excluded.

Seriously, a scenario could be select QB like David Fales next draft & he trains under Schaub 2014 season. We trade Yates after 2013 (signed thru 2014).
Trade Schaub after 2014.

In 2015 choose best of Fales (in his second year), Klein (3rd season) and Keenum. If nothing better, we can keep MS and select back up and third guy. Yates is getting closer to end of deal & we need to move or start him over Matt by end of his contract. This probably not best bet.

Fales? I say we draft DEREK CARR :trapstar:

No, just kidding.

I have an awful feeling we're going to go for AJ McCarron or something. I like him but I don't think he has a very high ceiling.

He's a bit more mobile than Schaub though imo

To build dynasty, you move younger players up to replace starters when you can. Cuts costs and keeps youngsters motivated. Not all starters are HOFs, jersey in the rafter like AJ. Schaub is a good Qb but not great and like others is helped by the system. If he or others can be replaced with comparable if not exact why not consider?

In 2015 Matt's cap is $17m & 33 years old. I think people who think ahead are amazing.

I expect McCarron to be a higher first round pick.

Dude will get cut by August unless he switches to TE. Robinson has accepted it in Jacksonville, this kid needs to do the same. If we are to replace Schaub, next years draft is the time to do it.

I find it interesting that Plummer is working with him, I guess this is how teams Work their way around the new rules concerning training and camps, have someone from the outside do it.

Problematic at best, because I'm sure this will hurt the franchise down the road.

Of course Klein will get some reps at QB in the rookie mini-camp.

The only other QB they have who is elegible is Keenum , not like he's going to take all those reps himself ....

This kid is a long ways away from being an NFL QB. If it looks like it is correctable, put him on the PS. Hell, it might take two seasons on the PS to fix that delivery. It is hard to change your throwing motion, it takes time. Thats why it has never stuck with Tebow- He never gets the time to really get it down.

As for Keenum usurping Schaub- will. never. happen. He might stick as the 3rd QB or get put on the PS again (keeping 3 real QBs in the system is always a good idea), but him challenging for the starting role is laughable.

I am awaiting the reaction from the UH squad.

I'm not going to say that he will never usurp Schaub. Put him on the PS and see what happens. Obviously it won't happen this year or next but the kid is talented and has skills that are pretty appealing in this system. It comes down to can you fix his throwing motion and can he learn to make good decisions.

Mike

I didn't watch a lot of this guy during the season, but when I went back and watched some clips of him I liked what I saw from a play making standpoint.

Obviously he has great mobility, but I was impressed with some of the throws he made.

The physical tools are there and the creativeness on the fly is there. This is the kind of guy that I want to see Kubiak work with for a few years and see what he can do.

I won't make any lofty predictions for him, but I'm not going to rule him out as an NFL quaterback either.

You could argue Jeff Tedford and the way he coaches his qb's to hold and deliver the ball is the biggest reason Rodgers fell like he did. He had a good career at Cal, but prior to him there was a stigma about Tedford qb's and coaches were weary. Dilfer, Akili Smith, Carr, Harrington and then Boller.

In addition to this go back and look at some tape of Rodgers' delivery in JUCO and then look at his delivery at Cal....and look at his delivery now...His JUCO delivery and his delivery now look different from his delivery at Cal.

I say all that to say that Klien's throwing motion may not be all on him..maybe he was coached that way ...It looks really robotic/formulaic. As i look at it though, the only thing i see that he's got to get better at is his speed...maybe shorten his wind up...its not a Byron Leftwhich - Tim Tebow wind up, but its pretty slow...Ben Rothlisberger-esque.

Has anyone seriously argued that he will? I know 76Texan has posted on Keenum's positive qualities, but I don't even think he has predicted or called for Keenum to replace Schaub. As a UH guy, all I'd like to see is Keenum and Yates get a much greater chance in training camp and preseason to fail (Yates much moreso than Keenum). If Keenum can't cut it, I want to see that. A bunch of guys on the internet telling me he's no good has no more worth than a bunch of guys on the internet telling me he's the next Tom Brady.

I know what we have in Schaub. I don't need to see a lot of him in TC and preseason. Hell, I didn't much like seeing him over the last six games of the regular season last year, so I sure don't need to see him in meaningless games. I want to see what Yates and Keenum have, and since I recognize that Schaub has the experience and to this point the best proven skill set, I want to see those guys in TC and preseason. But it seems every preseason, we don't get to see the backup QB with the first stringers against the first stringers.

QB is the most coveted & premium position in NFL that drives ticket sales wins & losses. His winning percentage speaks for itself & his marriage to super hot wife Shalin Klein

cements in my view his winning approach in mulitple facets. His working with former Bronco & Kubiak fav Jake Plummer also a not so strange twist http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_22612023/jake-plummer-has-found-football-again. Looking at his completion average it's not as bad as some people here are making it out to be 64.8%. 197/248, 2641 yards 16 TD's to 9 INT's. But obviously what he does best is avoid the rush. Bad match-up for Ducks who have faced dominant QB's in each of last three bowl appearances, Cam Newton (6-5 248) Terrelle Pryor (6-4 244) Russell Wilson they defeated/contained (5-10 203) then Collin Klein (6047 226) who they forced to beat them with his arm. This is what most people remember, forget his front running Heisman hopes prior to end of season collapse. He possess great vision & feel for the pocket. Sure he is more a thrower than a passer who hesitates in his delivery into tight windows but players respond to him, he can create & if Plummer/Kubiak can simplify his release he could be at least a serviceable back-up, giving Texans something they never had a running QB.

If Schaub was any kind of a leader, we wouldn't have to rely on FoK (friends of Kubiak) to help these guys to be as ready as possible.

I kid... I kid. But it is interesting to see Plummer willing to help out his old coach.

Stephen Magee will hopefully turn some heads this coming camp. While he didn't set the NFL on its ear in Dallas, their fans were still happy enough with his play to rue his leaving. Perhaps in a different system he might flourish as well. Would love to see him on a bootleg with the wheels and arm to make yards with.

Either way, should be good competition which only benefits the team.

Gig 'em Aggies. I always thought McGee was a solid QB.

As someone who suffered through 4 years of A&M football under Franchione I say...

:ahhaha:

I'm not so sure. I already have seen people start to nitpick him and it will only get worse if Alabama doesn't go undefeated next season.
Nit pick usually is for most first rounders. So far no reason to say Alabama cannot go undefeated, but I do understand your point. After this draft, QBs should be even more in demand 2014.

I was under impression that Klein'd delivery has to do with his right foot coming up too soon? That seems fixable.

Sic him 76!

Just a hunch and I don't think he's a very good fit. Plus, I don't see us going into camp with 5 QBs. Who will he beat out?

If Keenum forces his way onto the active roster they'll probably want a PS QB. Even if Keenum doesn't make the roster, it wouldn't hurt to have two QB's on the Practice squad considering Klein is athletic enough to simulate other positions.

I don't think he has to beat out anyone to make it into camp. I think they could go to camp with 5.

This is a guy that Kubiak is bringing in at least partially because of a recommendation by a friend. I don't think he'll cut the guy without giving him a real shot.

We'll see though.

Belichick had 4 QBs on the roster the year he drafted Brady, so everything is possible.

Soon after we picked him up, someone said we would probably use him during camp to help us get ready for Kaepernick, Russell Wilson, & Andrew Luck..... AT least the mobility they possess.

I don't know if it's true or not, but it is plausible.

Also, Keenum may not be as far along as we hoped. I can see McGee as a threat to both Keenum & Yates. & Klien to threaten Keenum on the PS.

The only way I see us carrying three QBs on the active roster, is if Kubiak is not happy with Yates.

I like that the Texans are taking a good long look at him just like they are with Keenum. Every time one of these guys is mentioned someone ends up posting a condescending comment about unrealistic UH fans (rmartin65 got his in first today) but really it seems like if you aren't getting in line to comment on how poor the odds are for these guys then you're portrayed as some unrealistic Cougar fan.

Like most of the people who comment about these things I'm just happy they are giving them a look. It's a good thing that the Texans are looking through the UDFA's for overlooked players. They just might find one eventually. I like Case Keenum and I'd like to think there was more to him than meets the eye. I'm not delusional about his chances though.
