8. DAVID QUESSENBERRY | San Jose State 6047|302 lbs|5SR Carlsbad, CA (La Costa Canyon HS) 8/24/1990 (age 22) #76

2012: (12/12) (LT) PROJECTION: 3rd Round
2011: (12/12) (LT) MEASUREABLES: 6047 | 302 | 34 3-8” | 10 5-8" | 81”
2010: (13/13) (LT) COMBINE: 5.06 40-YD DASH | 1.73 10-YD | 25 REPS | 29.5” V | 9-4 BJ | 7.49 3C | 4.45 SS
2009: (12/0) (OT)
2008: Redshirted

STRENGTHS: Athletic frame with adequate build and length…smooth kickslide with good lateral quickness in his shuffle…stays light in his movements to mirror…nice job getting out in space and blocking at the second level…squares his frame at the POA, sinking his hips extending his limbs… plays with an attitude and nasty mean streak…good awareness and always looking for someone to hit…proudly wore the “C” on his jersey…skill-set to kick inside to OG or OC if needed, can also long snap.

WEAKNESSES: Not overpowering and lacks the strength to eliminate defenders from the play…lean lower body…needs to do a better job using his length to keep rushers away from his body…needs to stay patient in his stance, getting in trouble lunging and ending up on the ground…bad habit of leaving his feet and missing his target…room to improve his footwork and play with better lower body flexibility…missed time in 2012 due to an ankle injury…how much more weight can he add?

SUMMARY: At just 235 pounds out of HS, was recruited as a TE/OT and has done a nice job adding nearly 70 pounds the past five years on campus…three-year starter with 37 career starts under his belt, all at LT…athletic frame with enough foot quickness to hold up in space with natural body control…needs to strengthen his lower half and do a better job using his length and punch…offers position versatility to fight for a starting OT job in the NFL while giving his team depth inside at OG and OC.

Just an excellent pick.

This could actually be Wade Smith's replacement if Brooks stays on the right side.
Tbh I like him as a RT. I like his pass protection a lot.

But whatever, I just think he's a good player to have and develop. He definitely has starter potential.

Just throwing out options. Quessenberry could play any of the positions except C along the line.

David Quessenberry, OL, San Jose State: A former walk-on tight end who started the past three seasons at left tackle, Quessenberry was asked to play virtually every position up front for the North team this week. With a broad-shouldered, long-armed frame (6-5, 294 pounds) that looks capable of handling another 15 pounds with some work in an NFL weight room, he drew positive notes from scouts during Monday's weigh-in and played well throughout the week. He demonstrated athleticism, strength and the mental toughness to handle the jump in competition as well as the constant position changes. Quessenberry was one of six prospects individually highlighted by Phil Savage, the Senior Bowl's director and a former NFL general manager.

The bridge between stupid and useless is short.
If things go south I think he can fill as rt but i've got him pegged as wade smiths replacement.

Rt

Newton vs B williams

Rg

Brooks vs jones

Lg

Smith > quessenberry

Jones and Q have the flexibility to fill at center if necessary. Lot of maneuverability here in the ol. Solid pick.

A steal this late. I had him going much higher than the 6th round.

There will be stiff competition for the starting RT spot.

Texans sign their four sixth-round picks: OT David Quessenberry, WR Alan Bonner, DT Chris Jones, TE Ryan Griffin.

Our Oline could have really strengthen itelf to again be one of the best. Brown, Newton and Brendan Williams could be three very strong tackles and Quiz could be an awesome OG or swing OT. Gardner really needs to bring his lunch bucket and prove he intends to remain.

Still puzzled why this guy fell all the way to the sixth round ? Well, even if we missed something nobody else did, 6th round pick is a minor investment.

I don't know if the Texans know exactly where they want him to play or if they even maybe see him as a guy that could back up both guard and tackle spots.

He said that during the rookie camp he was playing inside and outside.

I can see why the Texans like to see if he can stay at OT.
He has the height and the length.
If he can build up some more core strength at his base (at 6'5 surely he can add some more bulk) and keep improving his footwork, he might become a good OT.

Obviously, the hope is for Williams and Newton to duke it out for the job this year, but with both of them having knee problem, there's no telling what's going to happen.

It would have been nice if there's no health concern on the O-line so that each of the rookie can settle in at one position during camp.

I'd rather Williams go to LG and be Wade Smith's future replacement. I think he and Duane Brown would be absolute beasts over there. I love how he tries to punish defenders in the run game and I think he's a really good run blocker.

But his pass blocking on film was awful. He did so many things wrong and and he got his QB killed a couple times.

Maybe it's all technique, but to me he just looked uncomfortable as a pass blocker on the edge.

If he doesn't improve there, I'd want the Texans to move him to guard and work Quess as strictly a tackle. His pass blocking is 100% better than Williams.

It will be interesting to see which guy taking reps at which position in TC and PS.

Comments by Mike Maccagnan, Texans director of college scouting

Scout's Take: Maccagnan on T David Quessenberry

“Scouting’s a very subjective thing. We look at hundreds of guys every year, and if you do this for a number of years, it ends up being in the thousands, probably, the number of players you evaluate. What happens a lot of times when you’re gathering information, when you’re talking to staff at a school, you’re getting a lot of subjective information that you have to put a value on based on what you interpret his ability to be. What happens with scouts, you do see guys that you kind of like as a prospect, and it doesn’t always have to be a first-round draft pick. It could be a seventh-round type draft pick where you just think, ‘You know what, that would be a really good guy to get at a certain point in the draft.’ I kind of felt that way with David. I scouted him going into the senior season. In the spring, he weighed about 282, so he was a little lighter than the

prototypical tackles you see, but he got his weight up to close to 300 and probably played in the 290 and 295 range, and then when you talk to the staff there, they note that he was a former tight end who walked on and eventually grew into a tackle. I also like the fact that even though it was a ‘non-skill’ position, he was elected captain for them twice. So you like those aspects about his personality and character, and then when you watch him on tape, he is a good athlete. I thought he was a good technician when you watched how he played. I thought he was a very effective run blocker both on the line of scrimmage and at the second level. He did a nice job in pass protection. He actually played part of his season, I believe, with a sprained ankle, so some teams may have looked at tape when he was injured and they may not have liked (him) as much, but I actually liked the fact that he gutted it, played tough, worked through the injury. When he was available in the sixth round, me personally, he was a kid I was kind of excited because I thought he was a very good value for the potential return in the prospect. I think he’ll be a good guy to see if he can develop.”

I fully expect him to end up on IR by the end of preseason, with an unconfirmed injury we had no prior knowledge about.

a.k.a we are saving him for next year

I'm confused ? Are you talking about Quessenberry or the other offensive tackle we drafted, Williams, who is already injured ?

Could be either one, it seems like every season one of our draft picks/UDFA's that we really like but don't have a spot for on the team ends up on IR for mysterious reasons, This season I'm putting my money on Qberry

Yup, happens every year. I haven't ever tracked any other teams MO. Anyone know if this is common throughout the league?

Yep, Q's a keeper for sure. Can't believe he made it 'til the 6th. Great snag by that GM that so many folks at one time beat on like a buck toothed, pimpled, red headed step child .

A quick-footed huge load to move, who moves a load. I would love to see him eventually tried at OT.

+1 I'd like to see him get a chance at RT.
Have been thinking about this more lately. I am not a fan of Newton. I know some on here think Newton is going to develop, but I don't see it. Qberry looks a lot more technically solid than Newton, and he's plenty powerful, I think.

newton has been absolutely aweful. he looks jiggly, slow and usually confused or scared. how he's getting snaps with the #1's is beyond me. i think Q would be an upgrade over newton today.

that being said i like grooming Q for the left guard spot. wade smith has regressed each season IMO, and is costing more than he's worth. Q at left guard would upgrade the position and save us some much needed cap space. i think he could even take over this season, it seems a more natural position - but i havent focused on him enough yet to say that with any certainty.

I said I wanted quess at RT from day one. I wish they'd have worked him there to work on his pass pro.

I'd have actually been working Williams at RG. but I guess they feel like Brennan's athleticism translates better to tackle. His pass protection was horrid at times in college, but it looked mostly technique related.

I really like what I saw from Newton last year, and the few flaws that I saw in his game were fixable with coaching and experience. This preseason he looks even worse than last year. I'm not sure if his offseason knee surgery is to blame or what but he has regressed from the end of last season. This is also surprising since D. Brown was suppossedly working with him during the offseason. As for Ques. I'd like to see him get a tryout at RT but I think he's the heir apparent at LG next year.
