Choir boy philosophy...

my thought is the texan organisation wanted to set in stone a certain culture. Now that the team has core leaders and are winning its now when you can add in a few guys who have talent but mentally are a little suspect. Its a good model to go with ... if this is the case
Having a couple of Wardens like Watt, Cush, Schaub and AJ certainly doesn't hurt the model. Especially AJ. If he gets in your grill, you either royally screwed up or you have a lot of talent and you're not putting in the effort to maximize it.

It's been changed for awhile now, people just like to keep the cute "they only draft choir boys" line going (Just look at the post above mine calling Cushing a warden...) Cushing was NOT a "choir boy" coming out of college, he had extensive steroid rumors popping up every where, yet the team that only drafts "choir boys" drafted him in the first round 
Funny thing is, if you ever frequent other message boards.. every NFL fan around the league (outside of the Bengals) accuse their team of this. It's a joke. All teams take consideration into a player's past discretions and then also have to make the decision to pass or draft accordingly.
Travis Johnson... not a choir boy, plenty of warnings about attitude problems when he was coming out
Jerome Mathis... Had character issues coming out
Amobi Okoye admitted to smoking pot
Mario Williams was said to be a lazy player who takes plays off.
3 of those 4 players all had major question marks yet were first round picks. Holy hell, even if Sam Montgomery turns out to be a total bust/turd I won't care, because once and for all we'll be able to put this whole "Texans only draft high character choir boys" crap to bed. Especially when other teams are doing the same exact thing.

I don't know about a choir boy philosophy, but no matter who we pick no one in the organization and most of the fans don't want guys that aren't properly socialized and can't function in the world as real living people. You don't want guys like Pac man used to be. You don't want any Kenny Britts..you don't want guys that are getting arrested...
But guys that play with an attitude...have a nasty demeanor on the field...not necessarily pleasant in real life, but at least respectable and fully functioning...yeah...those are the guys we should want and if there was ever a time where we shied away from that, shame on us.

I don't remember any rumors when he was in college or coming out, just that he tested positive for a substance "associated" with steroid use, but never steroids themselves once he was in the NFL.

One, I don't see Schaub as being a "warden" who would try to reign anyone in. Just doesn't seem to have that kind of personality. Two, based on the aforementioned assessment of AJ, he should be in Matts face since everyone seems to love his numbers, he must just not be maximizing his talent.

People who think we're choir boys just don't know & they're talking out their rears.
We won't take any thugs that display patterns non-conducive with a winning organizations; repeated run ins with the law, or disciplinary sanctions, etc..

Well said. This reminds me of the "Bob McNair won't spend money on the team" argument. It's simply not true. McNair is not, and never has been, a cheap owner. Yes, we can question his personnel decisions. He's made quite a few suspect ones. But, when it comes to doling out the money, McNair is far from cheap.

Really? What non-choir boys have we drafted this weekend? We don't select criminal or thugs but we have always had hard hitting guys with your adjectives. Briesel was known to have a bit of nastiness as has Antonio Smith & many players have had swagger Like Dunta, Johnathan Joseph, Watt & Cushing.

The thing is.... in the modern NFL, no team can really afford to have players who don't know how to behave socially to some degree. The NfL does penalize teams as well as players when the player's off the field behavior goes outside the law or when said behavior does not up-hold the corporate image that the NFL chooses to put forth. Choir-boys? Not necessary....but acceptable citizenship is required. My hat is off to Mcnair for being a person who was ahead of the curve on this one...
Having said that, I'm glad that we as a team are looking at the ability of guys to have a bit of an edge rather than just being nice guys. I like our guys to be aggressive and get after other teams. Now, if our game plans can just develop a killer instinct....
