Potential low-risk, high reward Qb for the Texans

GP

Go Texans!
Tebow. There, I said it. Boo me. Hiss me. Do your worst.

But remember: His days in NY are not indicative of who he is as a QB. That place is severely dysfunctional and nobody there is thriving. NOBODY.

1. He moves and extends plays. End of story, you know what and who I am talking about here. Tebow is mobile, Tebow can withstand a blitz from a DB or smaller LB.

2. He's a RZ dream come true. Red Zone problems, huh? yeah, well this is the guy you want when you have to make a TD and not a FG since you're only 10 yards away from the EZ. Defenses are guessing what the play is with Tebow, because he can run or fake run & throw, he can fake run and pump fake and then run anyway. He presents problems for defenses near the EZ.

3. He'd by QB3, emergency QB on game days and scout team during the week. Trade Schaub to NYJ for Tebow and a NYJ mid-round pick (late 4th or early 5th round, let's say). Tell him he's QB3 behind yates and keenum. Run scout team, be suited up and on the sidelines on game days as QB3, and wait for a chance like Leinart received in 2011. It can happen, so it should be clear to him the rules of warfare for his time here.

4. What is to lose? We lost Schaub, but seriously...so what. We know what his ceiling is in a playoff setting vs. a team not named Bengals. And even in the Bengals game, folks, he did NOT impress. He squeaked by. And that same level of talent was there in the next round vs. NE too. But it didn't get over.

I just think Tebow is not the same as Carr or Young. Carr never worked hard, Vince was dumb. Tebow is a hard worker, a motivator, and he's not stupid like Vince is. He possibly could be a low risk, high reward here in Houston and it clears the way for more mobility at QB instead of slothman Matt Schaub who isn't really giving us a chance aghainst more savvy defenses.

You really think a Yates/Keenum battle at QB is a good idea? I wouldn't be surprised if Tebow won that starting job and then where are we? We've got a 5th round pick and a QB who can't get on the field ahead of Sanchize?

I can think of 2,586,875 reasons why we shouldn't trade for him. Now if he's cut and clears waivers, I'd be interested. Let Schaub play 50 minutes, and let Tebow close out the game.

I think Tebow's time in NY has to be completely disregarded.

1. He was moving out of Denver no matter what, and the Jets were the only team willing to bite at the time...and really it was only as a marketing ploy. Once he was there, and I know this sounds like a fan boy (of which I am definitely not, btw) but he was pigeon-holed and only sparingly used as yet another decoy of sorts. The environment with the Jets is toxic for everyone. So I disregard his time there. Tebow never ran into the ass of his own lineman, so he's got that going for him. Mark Sanchez was and is a bad QB who landed on what was, at the time, a rising team (primarily on defense). Since then, he's done nothing...but they have this infatuation with making him become a success at all costs. To that end, Tebow was never going to challenge even if he could and would.

2. Yeah, I think letting Yates and Keenum battle for the QB1 gig is a good move. Now is the time to ride a rejuvenated defense (especially with a better safety in Ed Reed, the return of Cushing, Watt in his usual unstoppable self, and whatever draft picks on defense we can make to shore up the LB and possibly DL positions we need strength in. Ride the defense, let younger QBs who have mobility make plays that Matt can't. Let's cut the apron strings and move on now rather than after Gary gets himself fired and Schaub hits the bricks with him. Now is the time to act, it'll spark the whole team and give hope in something more plausible than Matt Schaub moving the ball between the 20s and then getting buried on 3rd down in the RZ. No more FGs. Let's make some plays in the RZ and make defenses do something other than lock down AJ and sack our QB in an all-out blitz. You watch the games, you know that's true.

I can think of 2,586,875 reasons why we shouldn't trade for him. Now if he's cut and clears waivers, I'd be interested. Let Schaub play 50 minutes, and let Tebow close out the game.

I thought that route at first, too...but I can think of two reasons why that doesn't work: (1) Jacksonville and (2) Tennessee who each would think heavily about adding him to a low contract if for no other reason than to ensure he doesn't land with us. They WANT us to stick with Matt Schaub, they don't dare want us getting a guy who is big, fast, and pretty skilled at making something out of nothing to the point of just wearing a defense down over time. EDIT: They are tailoring their defenses to account for Matt Schaub's style of passing game, which is now 100% pocket passer...why not throw a wrench into that and create a more mobile, almost spread formation-centric offense; a hybrid of our own Kubiak offense and the Cougars/Gators style of offense. You'd catch Jax and Tenn trying to build a defense to stop a pocket guy like Schaub (because he is now, 100%, a pure pocket guy. We ran almost zero bootlegs late in the 2013. Schaub is burnt toast as a bootlegger).

Plus, trading Schaub away ensures we get SOMETHING for him. A lot of people were upset about the DeMeco Ryans trade when it happened, but I took the angle that we finally freaking got something out of a player rather than releasing the guy for nothing. It was somewhat of a first for the Rick Smith front office. They tried to trade Carr, had to release him. They thought they could maybe move Dunta, had to let him walk. Trading Schaub gets us a draft pick and a QB3 who has had ZERO injuries, btw, plus it gives us a chance to completely move toward the idea of more mobile QBs than what we had in Matt. But, Kubiak for some reason is bent on pocket passing. Nice stats and all that jazz. He doesn't want a wild card out there. He wants known quantity on each snap, throw it away or lay down if you have on options...because the defense will hold and get it back for us.

This will never happen, btw, because the last thing Gary and the FO would do is banish Matt to the Jets in favor of Tebow. There's that element of loyalty at stake if they did. It would be a shocking move, it would create more than just a marketing buzz...it would say "A stable franchise, who wants good character in the locker room, has added an under-used QB and has decided to go with youth and mobility at QB." They could package it that way, but the fact that Schaub would go the Jets...that's the deal killer for Bob and Gary. I bet Rick Smith would be all for it, though. I think Rick could shape this team better if he'd be given that chance. And maybe he will someday. Just not yet. IMO.

----------------------

OK, so I have a Plan B up my sleeve since I knew the Tebow thing would be met with rife and chortles.

Zac Dysert, Miami (of Ohio) University...video here Watch the 1:29 mark, he stands in there, sheds the blitzer and almost finds the emeregncy outlet receiver on the play. Matt, in that situation, is down on the ground. Every time.

Wears #4, and reminds me of the legendary #4 in his ability to rifle passes in any scenario he finds himself in...can eject out of the pocket and get to the edges and run or pass whatever he needs to do at that split moment.

I'd release Yates or trade him (doubtful anybody would bite since we would have showed our hand by drafting Dysert, theoretically). Keep Schaub as our Cap Space QB for 2013, let Keenum be QB2. Dysert QB3 emergency QB on Sundays and running scout team during the week. At some point, Case has to stop being the scout team QB and just dial into our own offense and move forward or move on. This idea would keep Schaubists satisfied, since they love stats so much...it promotes a younger guy in Case and releases a middle-ground guy like Yates who frankly wasn't even doing his own things correctly in the preseason last summer (and I don't want to hear how he didn't have an OL and better RBs/TEs/WRs to work with, he was failing on his own in small ways that had nothing to do with his supporting cast). If we can't move Schaub, let's move Yates and dial into Case and Dysert. Can't put Dysert on practice squad because he'd never clear waivers.

All of it is pure Madden video game conjecture here, there's no way Kubiak will deviate from Matt and TJ and Case. They'll be his trio of QBs in 2013, and only when 2014 will we see any remote chance of moving on from Matt Schaub. Cap space dictates this AND Gary's insatiable need for loyalty to his QBs supports the cap space reasoning as well. It fits like a glove. And that sucks.

Tebow is a high-risk, no reward option at quarterback. I don't want him or his circus anywhere near this town.

If we're going to look for a quarterback then I think we should start by looking at quarterbacks. Tebow is not a quarterback at this level or in this era. Making matters worse in such a scenario is that if you'll notice Gary Kubiak already asks Matt Schaub to do things he cannot do well. Do you really think that he would adjust his offense to a guy who can do even less?

Boo.

Hiss.

LOL. Nicely played. I would have replied the same way. We're cut from perhaps the same cloth.

You know what? That's spot on.

Hadn't thought of it like that, though I do think Tebow has a football I.Q. and could adapt if elements of his game are woven into the offense.

But then again, Kubiak wouldn't dare deviate from the Kubiak system. Not for a millisecond. To do so would say that great QBs are great because of who they are, not necessarily via coaching guidance and system dominance...and we all know that Gary held a clipboard for just such a talented QB throughout the 1980s. Frankly, this is about Gary trying to prove that Elway was great because of the Denver system. Gary wants to BE quarterback via the sideline since he never was one on the real field, so he doesn't want a free thinker out there. Just needs someone who would be HIM out there.

Some dads live vicariously through their kids. Gary, too, lives vicariously through his Texans "kids." IMO. A referendum on Schaub automatically includes Gary. I've never once gotten the idea by listening to him in interviews and seeing his "adjustments" and adaptations that he has the ability to think outside the box. His box is perfect, it just needs the right players and for them to do it his way. That's how it works with kids, they just have to get it right or require more parenting.

Here's another one. Watch at the 0:28 mark. Matt Schaub is on the ground there, without a doubt.

Forgot about that scramble in that game. That might be the definitive moment of 2011 right there. Schaub in that position, he not only doesn't get past the LOS...he doesn't get to the 1st down marker. Not even close to it.

Señor Stan;2152605 said:
We already signed a fullback. Greg Jones.

Frankly, we could use him on special teams. And am not joking. We suck at ST, and Tebow brings that old school attitude out there. He wants the contact.

And shouldn't you be in the A$$hole Thread???

I though I smelled ripe dog's ass in here. Now it's been confirmed!

I was with you, until I read the bit about trading Schaub for Tebow and a pick.

And then I thought, actually I want any mobile QB who can come in when Schaub is having one of those games where the receivers can't get separation he he's just going to chill in the pocket until he gets dragged down.

I think the treatment is correct, but the medicine is wrong.

Boo, hiss, couldn't get past the first sentence.

Just wondering what the Rams saw in Kurt Warner before picking him up  Is Tim Tebow better than every quarterback in CFL or Arena football? Might be able to get someone for free :hmmm:

I would do it. People say he can't play but he won a division title and a playoff game in his only year as a starter.

He may have a funny release and his accuracy comes and goes but i know he could win those close game at the end.

He got as far as Peyton did last year. Just saying.

I don't see why not... u know I was reading a mock draft mag today and it had the Texans Pick Geno smith if just some how he fell 2 us which I doubt but do u think we Texans will bite if Geno falls al the way to us

Please. Tebow won nothing. The team basically didn't suck as bad as the division to get into the playoffs at 8-8.

I hate the playoffs argument and this shows its absurdity comparing Tebow getting actually one stage farther than Manning as reflecting on the QB's. By that logic Schaub made it just as far as Tebow and one stage further than Manning as well.

PS - his accuracy doesn't come and go. It is non-existent. If you are connecting 47.9% of the time it is time to put down the rifle and buy a shotgun.

And that's why I, too, see no harm in making him QB3.

For Pete's sake, we had Matt Leinart as our QB2 in 2011! Matt. LEINART.

Orlovsky. Rosenfels. Grossman. Leinart.

Just can't understand the blowback on adding Tebow as QB3. It'd be saying he's only here as an emergency QB, and if it came down to using our QB3 then we're just winging it anyways...so, why not let it be a guy that has shown he can make defenses respect his ability to run?

If not Tebow, then let it be Yates or Case or Dysert...just somebody who isn't locked down to the tackle box. We've become the Drew Bledsoe-era Patriots. All it takes is taking a risk at QB.

People seriously forget and/or underestimate how good Drew Bledsoe was before his injury. And if we have become that, where the hell is the Super Bowl?

If Matt Schuab becomes Drew Bledsoe, Texans fans should be happy. He led the Pats to a Super Bowl appearance in the 90s and replaced an injured Tom Brady in the AFC Championship game in 2002.

Yep. My overriding point is that the Texans are not close to the Bledsoe era Pats. And Tebow is nowhere close to Schaub, much less Bledsoe.

Nice stats.

Resilient in the face of injury

Pro Bowl QB coming off of playoff ousters

And eventually watched another QB take his starting position due to injury...and was never the same again, with the exception of a singular encore performance when Brady was injured.

Minus his loss as a starter in the Super Bowl, his nice stats and Pro Bowls and injury challenges look like a lot like Matt Schaub. Yeah, duh, he's not exactly like Drew Bledsoe. But I think the two guys compare fairly well with their style of QB'ing and the hard luck they both faced when injuries hit them.

Bledsoe was drafted first overall in the 1993 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He started right away for the Patriots in his rookie season, as they improved from two to five wins.

On November 13, 1994, the Patriots had won just three of their first nine games and were losing 20-3 to the Minnesota Vikings at halftime. Bledsoe led a comeback victory in which the Patriots won 26-20 in overtime, as he set single game records in pass completions (45) and attempts (70).[5] By remaining undefeated throughout the succeeding games, the Patriots earned their first postseason appearance in eight years.[6] Bledsoe started all 16 games that season and went on to set a NFL record in pass attempts (691), becoming the second NFL quarterback to complete 400 or more passes in a season (400), and led the league in passing yards (4,555).[7] Due to his performance, Bledsoe was selected to his first Pro Bowl as an alternate.

Following a difficult 1995 season, Bledsoe turned it around in 1996 ranking among the top passers in the league with the help of wide receiver Terry Glenn, thus pushing the Patriots to reach the playoffs again and winning the AFC championship against the Jacksonville Jaguars 20-6. This led to an appearance in Super Bowl XXXI, where they lost to the Green Bay Packers by the score of 35-21. Bledsoe completed 25 of 48 passes for 253 yards, with two touchdowns and four interceptions in the loss. He was also named a starter for the Pro Bowl that season, the second of his career.

During the 1997 season, Bledsoe helped the Patriots win five of their final seven games to once again qualify for the playoffs, the fourth time in eight years as a Patriots starter he would lead the team to a postseason appearance. The Patriots lost in the second round to the Pittsburgh Steelers, however Bledsoe built a career-high 87.7 passer rating, passed for 3706 yards, tossed 28 Touchdowns, and earned his third Pro Bowl invitation.

The following year, he became the first NFL quarterback to complete game-winning touchdown passes in the final 30 seconds of two consecutive games.[8] In doing so, he propelled New England into the postseason for the third straight year. He completed these come-from-behind efforts while playing with a broken index finger on his throwing hand, an injury that would later sideline him for the postseason.

Bledsoe started the 1999 season very strongly, with 13 touchdowns and only four interceptions as the Patriots held a 6-2 mid-season record. However, Bledsoe subsequently threw only six touchdowns versus 17 interceptions, and the team faltered to an 8-8 record. The slide continued into 2000's 5-11 season. While Bledsoe threw a career low 13 interceptions that year, he was sacked 45 times.

Nonetheless, in March 2001, Bledsoe was signed to a then-record ten-year, $103 million contract.[9] Bledsoe did not, however, finish his career with the Patriots, nor even see the opening of the new Gillette Stadium. During the second game of the 2001 season, Bledsoe was hit by New York Jets linebacker Mo Lewis and suffered a sheared blood vessel in his chest. Replacing Bledsoe at quarterback, soon-to-be superstar All-Pro quarterback Tom Brady led the Patriots to an eventual Super Bowl championship. Though he never regained his starting role, Bledsoe nevertheless proved integral to his team's playoff run when he replaced a hobbled Brady in the AFC Championship Game against Pittsburgh. Bledsoe, starting from the Steelers 40 yard line, capped a scoring drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to David Patten to seal a 24-17 victory. In gaining the conference title Bledsoe completed 10 of 21 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown, with no interceptions.[10]

Appreciative of his lengthy tenure with the team, Patriots fans cheered Bledsoe in each of his three returns to New England as a visiting player.
Bledsoe's #11 jersey was not re-issued until the 2009 season, when Julian Edelman took the number.

On May 16, 2011, Bledsoe was voted by Patriots fans into the Patriots Hall of Fame.[11] He was formally inducted in a public ceremony outside The Hall at Patriot Place on September 17, 2011. Bledsoe beat former head coach Bill Parcells and defensive lineman Houston Antwine in a fan vote.

Buffalo Bills: 2002–2004
A change of scenery-by way of a trade[12]-to Bledsoe's former division rival Buffalo seemed to give him a bit of rejuvenation in 2002. He had one of his best seasons ever, passing for 4,359 yards and 24 touchdowns and making his fourth trip to the Pro Bowl. In Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings, Bledsoe set a team record with 463 yards passing in an overtime win. He continued his strong play in 2003 as the Bills began the year 2-0. However, a flurry of injuries stymied the Bills offense; they failed to score a touchdown in three consecutive games en route to a 6-10 season. In 2004, they fell one game short of making the playoffs; a late season winning streak went for naught when Bledsoe and the Bills performed poorly against the Pittsburgh Steelers backups in the season finale.[13]

Bledsoe was released by the Bills after the 2004 season to make way for backup quarterback J.P. Losman. It was the second time that his team had let him go for a younger quarterback. When Bledsoe was later signed by the Dallas Cowboys, he expressed bitterness with the Bills for the move, stating "I can't wait to go home and dress my kids in little stars and get rid of the other team's [Buffalo's] stuff."[14]

I'm just waiting for the Smith//Kubiak/Schaub era to end, so sure, bring him on.

I've seen enough of the existing regime to completely lose my interest.

Tried to tell people why Tebow was so successful in college and why he wasn't much of a pro prospect in many posts including this one when he was at Florida. I'm not sure why some people haven't figured it out yet.

Low risk high reward doesn't exist. Your potential reward is directly tied into the risk you are taking.

Trading Matt is where your idea turns to total crap

Tebow is awful

Same here. There won't be anything new under the sun with Gary Kubiak as head coach and Schaub at QB.

I do think, however, that Rick Smith has earned his keep. Every team loses veterans once they hit free agency at the end of a rookie contract, and our success has made our free agents in high demand...which goes back to a good GM drafting well.

Tebow?

we talking about the same Tebow that has a career QB rating of 75 and couldn't beat out buttfumble(who was one of the worst qb's in the league) during the season and they started McElroy instead of him when Sanchez got benched?

If tebow played more or threw as many times as nfl starters do his int numbers would be worse

Unfounded speculation until it happens

He couldn't complete passes to save his life and somehow you think if he threw more attempts he would get better? If he was better he would throw more attempts

. I think with more paying time he would improve.

Now this is "Unfounded speculation until it happens"

If he was better he would get more playing time, he isn't so he won't get more time

Tebow will be in Canada or what's left of the arena league within 2 years, tops if he insists he's a QB. If he will convert to FB or HB then maybe he'll find a place in the NFL. That doesn't seem too likely at this point.

None. Maybe an undrafted free agent, but with Schaub/Yates/Keenum/McGee I think we have enough QBs.

And shouldn't you be in the A$$hole Thread???

Probably so.

That doesn't change the speculation that a lot of alcohol consumption must have been involved when this thread was created.

Tim Tebow doesn't fit this system at all. Kubiak would never roll with Tebow and his lack of a skill set as a passer. You're always talking about Kubiak being so controlling as an offensive coach, so why would he ever even consider bringing in one of the biggest improv QB's in the league who is forced to run the majority of the time to get a positive gain? If you want other alternatives to Schaub, then that is understandable, but Tebow isn't even on anyone's radar at this point unless you're most interested in the "whole Tebow circus" thing which is something the Texans don't even need since they sell tickets at Reliant perfectly fine. This whole idea has "never would happen" written all over it and thank god for that being so. And for the record I like Tebow.

Watching the DeAndre Hopkins (WR, Clemson) highlights.....the Clemson QB, Boyd, looks legit.

Granted, I didn't watch Clemson's games...but the clips I see of Hopkins, Boyd looks really good.

I think the kid out of Arkansas looks like a good prospect too. Tyler what's-his-name?

I also think Dysert will be a good one.

There's some interesting QB prospects coming up this year and next.
