Why the Texans won't draft your favorite wide receiver

How can a guy this tall have such small hands?

I'm sure his girlfriend has wondered the same thing at some point...

Size, athleticism, the Texans are certain not to want to throw fades in his direction.

Funny, sad and true all at the same time! He could be 6'9 and it probably wouldn't matter. Score a touchdown in the redzone? Bah who needs those. I rather give our kicker some extra practice!

Fast, productive, comes from a NFL family. But off-field thingies and hair.

Thanks. Now I'm going to have to google and see what atrocity his hair is. Can it be worse than Ed Reed looking like Fredrick Douglas reborn?

Tall dude scored lots of touchdowns. Texans don’t do passing touchdowns.

What is this term...passing touchdowns? I am unfamiliar with it.

When was the last time the Texans drafted someone in the first round that didn’t excel in the combine underwear olympics?

Underwear Olympics lol. I like that one.

Heh, joking aside, very funny and good article. I have a few receivers I like but I doubt they'll get picked because the Texans have came out of left field with some of their choices. Hopefully, they will surprise us all and actually pick someone we actually would like to see on the roster instead of pulling someone from a small college (Lane College anyone?) or someone who hasn't played for an entire season. Most mocks lately seem to have us grabbing Hopkins out of Clemson.

Good to know that among my dark horses, one is still alive: Mark Harrison.

I wouldn't mind the Texans taking him one bit.

Walter is gone but we still needed a WR last draft. Mario out Mercilus in. Now Barwin out and we draft OLB with first pick and go WR later. History repeats.

hen how do u explain the POsey K Martin pick then ...??? neither of those two are like Andre at all there different

Agree. Add he has it in his DNA.

I can't tell you how many times Landry Jones under threw him when I put on the tapes.

In some other games, I watch the CB giving him between 7-10 yard cushions.
In other instances when they play man-up, the safety is right there to help over the top.

What I like about Stills and Stedman Bailey is that they run good routes.
Along the side line, they work to give the QB room to throw (and Jones still couldn't do it.)

Stills is probably the best receiver prospect who tries to keep both feet in bound the most efficiently the last couple of years, bar none.

Posey was picked to be Walter's replacement/upgrade: a big, strong guy who can block and who has good hands.

Martin was picked to be the slot guy we've never really had. Consider him the David Anderson upgrade.

Neither of those guys were picked to be AJ's successor and neither of them will be.

And when you put Stills in the slot close to AJ; let AJ run a post route while Stills run the wheel route; Somebody is going to get open.
Guy runs a great wheel route with his speed.

Andre Johnson types aren't found in the 3rd or 4th round very often.

Here's the sentence from Texans_Chick's blog that makes me think the Texans won't go WR in the 1st:

In addition, I think the Texans have enough belief in their offensive system to not think they have to draft a wide receiver in the low first.
Andre Johnson is under contract for 4 more seasons. I don't think the Texans see the necessity of finding his future replacement in this draft. I think they are looking for a solid #2 WR, and probably think they can find one @ #58. Maybe so. There are enough concerns on both sides of the ball to make me feel that WR is not a lock with that 1st pick.

I'm hoping the Texans pick up Cordell Robinson from SFA. They were one of two teams interested in him at SFA's pro day last week.

Robinson reminds me a lot of Andre Johnson. The same physical build, the same clutch catches over/around defenders, and he's not a vocal guy but prefers to lead by example on the field. I think they could really groom this kid with A.J. as his mentor.

Cordell Roberson is a likely UDFA pickup, according to Gil Brandt. Supposedly, 23 NFL teams were represented at the SFA pro day. The Texans might have some competition for Roberson.

Well that's an easy one cause he's already on the team!

I remember him now; the guy is definitely worth a look.

Roberson! Thanks for the correction. I always have it in my head as Robinson.

My son is a sr. with him, and said two teams showed a lot of interest in Roberson at their pro day, taking the time to interview him and have him fill out some paperwork. The Texans were one of those two teams.

I figured he'd either get drafted late, if he was drafted at all, or be an UDFA.

i realize why I collect some tapes; it's just a matter if I can dig them out.

Wow, I can't believe your son is already a senior. Time flies. Were there any teams there interested in a 6'9" o-lineman?

Nah, he didn't have the numbers. So he's getting ready for the real world now.

Can someone come up with an argument for a better trucking of a LB and secondary by a WR than that one?

I was just praying Leach didn't get a flag for taunting because he clearly did.

I know. I was screaming at my TV screen telling him to SHUT IT! Didn't want all that hard work to go to naught.

That sucks my little brother is a junior he plays center, and is 6'3 295. Talking to Baylor, UTSA and Virginia and a few smaller schools right now.

Looks like we might have enough guys with family members in or nearly college football to start a thread somewhere. My oldest nephew was a 4 year letterman at baylor from 07-10 (graduated and is an asst coach at his high school)

My younger nephew just signed at letter ot intent at Arkansas state to play De and major in engineering.

It scares me too!

Why not go with Kenny Stills if you like speed; his 4.38 is only .04 behind Swope.

His 20SS is better than Swope 4.13 to 4.25

I love Stills. Would take him over Swope even though they are even talent wise. The whole concussion thing scares me.

Every time I go through this year's list of WR prospects, I keep coming back to DeAndre Hopkins. He just seems like the right fit.

Dre comes from a national championship pedigree. From a football factory. I know the easiest thing to do when evaluating a young kid is to compare him to somebody you like, but IMO if the kid hasnt held a trophy over his head in college, he isnt Andre Johnson, and to believe he would have even half the career Dre has had is a dis-service to both players.

On topic: If the Texans dont address WR in the 1st 2 rounds of the draft is it OK to get back on the "Rick Smith Sucks Balls" train heading out of town?

If anything Smith should be working on a package to move up in the draft and get that legitimate replacement for Dre instead of looking at projects, those havent worked out thus far.

Yeah, my brother and a couple of his friends were talking about him the other day. My brother was out at the pro day, but didn't participate because of his acl injury.

Did your son participate in it?

My brother is about to graduate too. Matter of fact we're heading up there in a couple weeks for their graduation.

What about the CFL? Does he speak Canadian? ;)

hehe, probably not but he likes Canadian bacon. Does that count?

He did some basic stuff, but he was the only offensive lineman and he said they did not run him through any of the lineman drills that you see at the combine.

He thinks his ACL injury from 2011 slowed him down and it also prevented him from playing much last season. So there's not much tape on him, and without the base speed that the NFL wants/needs - plus he's probably a couple of inches too tall - they did not give him much attention.

I might be at graduation. Depends on my baby girl. But we will definitely be headed to his graduation party on Sunday, 05/12.
