Texans DBs vs NFL DBs

Some of y'all follow this stuff more closely than I do, so maybe y'all can give me some perspective.
My question is this: (let's assume that Ed Reed performs at roughly the same level as last season) For the 2013 season, where would the Texans defensive backfield rank versus the other defensive backfields in the league?

List the NFL defensive backfields better than Joseph, Jackson, Manning and Reed:

  1. ?
  2. ?
  3. ?
  4. ?

CBs should ~stay the same.

SS/FS will be worse against the run & tackling, better against the pass.

In no particular order, I would put the 2012 49ers, Seahawks, and Bears ahead of the Texans secondary. After that it gets kind of iffy. The Jets have a great secondary when Revis is healthy, but since he went down, I don't know how you want to count that. Cromartie did fill in pretty well for him. I'd say the Texans would be top 10 at the very least, with Reed I'm not sure it really moves them up that much.

I cannot figure it as Joseph should be better; also entire defense with Cush back. Throw a solid NT and another ILB in draft and that will greatly impact DBs also.

Bears lost a good nickel on D.J. Moore.

Didn't the Niners lost a guy too?

I agree that the Seahawks are pretty good.

It's relative to our pass rush this year if you compare last years squad to this year. More talent doesn't mean superior performance if the front 7 dont execute. Mccain is comming off injury and that concerns me. I expect more out jj because I know he had some nagging injuries. Our 3rd safety has gotta be better this year

I think that's the biggest IF. Will Wade wake up and get us a brick wall in the middle? He's played with both but is on record as preferring a "penetrating" nose guard to get after the QB. Can't have both. (very often) I think Mitchell does a better job than most give him credit for but he's no Cullen Davis or Kris Jenkins type which I've come around with to the consensus thinking that that's what we need.

This draft will tell the truth I believe.

I expect us to sign another vet FA or two and draft two defensive players by the third round. We should be fine (I hope.)

What kind of injury did McCain sustain?

I need Doc CNND ASAP!

Moore is no big deal to lose. The Bears will be fine. Tillman turned out to be a stellar CB this year. Their pass rush is really good too, which hides any issues with their DBs.

49ers lost Dashon Goldson to the Bucs. That is a big loss, so yeah, they probably will be worse off, unless the draft falls their way. I expect them to take a safety with one of their first two picks, and possibly a CB with the other. Depends on how things shake out, but for now they definitely got worse.

Seahawks are still top notch, and I expect them to have a better secondary than the Texans in 2013. They actually improved their pass rush, so it should be even more difficult for QBs to pass against them.

The Texans really do have a legitimate claim to being a top 5 secondary. 4 quality starters in the backfield, and a decent nickel CB. Now if we could improve the pass rush, we could really make that secondary look good....

I think Moore is quite imporant for the Bears.
I read that he voiced opinion on Cutler too openly (defending another player) and Lovie didn't like it too much.

And they lost a pass rusher in Idonije

Well Lovie doesn't work for the Bears anymore, so I don't think that would play into them not re-signing him this offseason. The GM did stay the same, so maybe he had it in for him, but I can't find anything out there that says DJ Moore is a special CB. I have the Bears in the mock draft, and most of what I read about him people didn't seem to think he was more than a JAG.

I read a piece out there; don't know if I can find it anymore.

It said that he was playing well.

Moore was benched after that incidence.

I did scout him in college (those were the years when we were looking for CBs and safeties, and I was concentrating on DBs); he's one that I don't mind to have.

PFF has a positive 3.1 grade for him compare to negative 9 for McCain.

Moore has played in 43 career regular season games with three starts and has tallied 133 tackles, 10 interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns, and 17 passes defensed.

the seahawks have a monster secondary, and the bears and 49'ers are pretty stout. i'll show my inner homer however and say we're going to have the best secondary in the league. JJo is a top 3 corner (when healthy) and kareem has gone from bad to good to really good - he'd be a #1 on many teams. i'm going to say it now to be used against me later ... kareem jackson will be our best DB this season. between harris and mccain, one will step up and i fully expect it to be mccain back to 2011 form. manning is above average and ed reed is a hall of fame lock.

it's hard to pick anyone outside of seattle that has the talent we do.

I don't see how our DB's get better with two old guys as safeties. Pass defense might get marginally better but run support and tackling takes a hit. That's 2 out of 3 going in the wrong direction. When you build a team through the draft, sometimes you actually get a winner and need to resign that player. Quin was that guy this offseason.

A lot of the Texans coverage issues were poor ILB coverage, imo and not on the safeties. After Cush went down, our LB corps just sucked.

It's worse for the Jets. They lost both safeties; and with their cap situation, they probably won't be able to fill both spaces.
