Does spending money in free agency lead to success?

The Miami Dolphins started free agency 2013 off with a bang when they locked up wide receiver Mike Wallace on Tuesday. Then they proceeded to keep spending. And spending.

Following the Dustin Keller and Brandon Gibson moves on Friday, we're ready to call this race after less than a week: No team is going to out-spend the Dolphins this offseason. They are the "Offseason Champs."

But does getting fans excited in March help in December?

We decided to look back at the last five years of free-agent frenzy "winners" and see how much that money helped. This is far from a scientific study, but Dolphins fans may not want to read ahead.

2012: Buffalo Bills
Big names really do want to play in Buffalo! A ton of folks were talking up...

2011: Philadelphia Eagles
Could the "Dream Team" really be only two years old? GM Howie Roseman....

2010: Detroit Lions
...
2009: Washington Redskins
The Redskins have annually made a ton of noise in March...

2008: Cleveland Browns
Coming off a 10-6 season, the Browns had momentum...

That's the trouble with offseason titles: They create big expectations. Big disappointment usually follows.

Every team spends money in free agancy. There isn't a team in football who doesn't. Its just some do it better than others. You've got to find value.

But beyond that, you simply don’t rely on free agency to immediately “put the team over the top.” This isn’t baseball, or even fantasy football.

The last three Super Bowl-winning teams (Ravens, Giants, Packers) had a total of one free agent (Giants center David Baas) in the starting lineup in his first year with the team. All three of those teams are near the top of the league at drafting and developing talent...

maybe maybe not just depending if u get the right guys and they pan out and produce

Same with the draft

and same with your final 53 man roster u just gotta get it all right

Just because you have money to buy a race boat doesn't mean you win the race. A lot depends on driver, mechanics and other support personnel. A busted hose or belt can happen on the most expensive, well known triple digit boat.
