Dobbins, McCain drawing interest (both re-sign with texans)

Two members of the Houston Texans defense are generating buzz in the free-agent agent market.

A source said that inside linebacker Tim Dobbins has received interest from four teams while three squads have given feelers to cornerback Brice McCain.

The Texans have interest in re-signing both players, the source said.

Dobbins, 30, has spent the past two seasons with the Texans serving predominantly as the team’s top backup at both ILB spots. Dobbins started six games last season before landing on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

McCain, who served as Houston’s slot cornerback, also landed on IR with a late-season foot injury. McCain, 26, has four interceptions in 56 career games with six starts.

Resign McCain replace Dobbins via draft.

Isn't this tampering?

There is some kind of new rule in place for the FA period. The FA cannot sign a contract until the actual FA period begins on the 12th, but the agents of the FA's can start negotiations with interested teams today (Mar 9th). I don't remember where I saw or heard this. Maybe someone else can fill in the details.

I wasn't too pleased with Tim Dobbins' performance last season. He played well in spurts but his body broke down way too fast after Cushing's injury. Hopefully we can draft somebody younger and more durable.

Bingo. I think the same way.

I appreciated Tim Dobbins a lot, and had him on the starting 53 for the past two seasons coming out of preseason (while many others thought he'd be cut instead). BUT, it's time to let go.

McCain, when healthy, gave our secondary a big boost.

Would like Dobbins back for depth purposes. Indifferent with McCain. He was freaking horrible last year. I think most of you are thinking about how he performed in 2011. In 2012 before his injury he spent most of his time getting beat. It was night and day when comparing the two years. So if someone wants to pay him 4mil per then more power to him.

Players from a team can sign with the old team at any point.

Gotcha..... but the original story is that other teams have reached out to the agents of players on our team. Dobbins & McCain are still Texans until the 12th. This puts the Texans (the original team) in a difficult situation trying to negotiate with those player's agents.

If Brooks moves to ILB, we'll have Sharpton for depth. Too many old & slow LBs ruin special teams. I liked Dobbins, but we have better options.

I'm just the opposite on this one. McCain is an average CB, but even average CB's get very expensive in FA since it's a premium position. Harris can move up to nickle CB, and then we can draft a CB to replace him in the depth chart. Dobbins wasn't great, and I agree with drafting a rookie starter probably in the 3rd round, but Dobbins is a very good run stuffer and would be good depth for close to the vet. minimum. Being a good run stuffer Dobbins would be nice to have in short yardage/goal line situations or special packages.

That's why good GM's were deciding who they wanted to keep or let go and negotiating with their players agents a month or more ago.

I like both players, but I'm considering them gone. Some team will pay them more than the Texans should. Brice will get a chance to start somewhere, and he should take it. Lets just hope a light clicks on for Harris.

I would feel more comfortable with McCain leaving if Harris had shown something in his absence. Still, I think this is a really deep draft for CBs and a nickel corner can be had in the 3rd or 4th (maybe with the Mario comp pick).

I loved Dobbins in 2011 and early 2012. But, he showed that he's not a full time player in late 2012. If a team wants to pay him like one, he should go for it.

But that's been the case for sometime now, right ?
As far as Mccain goes, he's almost surely gone and I'd be surprised if Dobbins gets another deal, why would he now if he couldn't land a contract with another team in the 2011-012 offseason when he was coming off of a better year ?

It's been referred to as "Legal Tampering".

The official start of the free agency/trading period isn’t until 3 p.m. St. Louis time Tuesday. But under a new league rule, teams can talk to agents of opposing teams’ free agents starting at 11 p.m. on Friday night.

Under the new guidelines, teams can talk only to the player’s agent, not the player himself. And players can’t be brought in for visits over this three-day period – actually 3½ days. No contracts can be signed. But negotiating can take place.

I wanna keep Dobbins, dude's a run stopping machine. Good ST guy too, I don't imagine his price being much higher than minimum either.

Heh we just went through a bout of injuries at this spot and you want to say we have Sharpton for depth...the guy who has spent more time injured than on the field in his career? Sounds like we will end up with a deja vu if we went that route. Plus Dobbins played better than him even on special teams. So between the two Dobbins is the better option. In any case, I was thinking more in the fact we need a couple of bodies for Depth. Not just one and definitely not just one who has proven to be injury prone like Sharp.

If Dobbins is getting interest and signs the first week of free agency then that means he is a free agent loss that will qualify for a compensatory pick in 2014... Assuming we lose Dobbins, Barwin or Quin, Cody, perhaps McCain, Caldwell, etc.. We are looking at accumulating some extra picks again next year.

Remember, we are looking at 10 or 11 picks this year due to last year's free agent losses. So, a good deal of our LB depth will come from those picks. Dobbins is a solid player, but he is going to be horribly exposed against the championship caliber teams because he is a deficit in coverage. So, he's not a guy this team should covet, IMO.

harris wasnt as bad as TT makes him out to be... he had a few bad plays and is generally a little too handsy and draws a decent amount of holding penalties but he broke up a fair share of passes too. i would say he played like KJ did in 2011, not the rookie KJ version we make him out to be. he showed potential, esp for a first time starter (albeit a veteran first time starter)

He can't play man coverage, and the Texans like to play a lot of man coverage. Harris could probably be OK on a team that plays zone. He has the wrong skill set for this team. They need another corner.

Harris was very bad from what I saw.

I would rather sign McCain if we could only sign one but its a toss up.

Harris showed some promise if you ask me.
I would be OK with McCain going. Dobbins is a pretty solid backup. If you don't sign him, then you will need to find two inside backers in the draft in my opinion.

Sounds like their agent hasn't even been contacted by the Texans yet. McCain worth 3.5-5M a year? Bye bye, Brice

Among things Canter said: McCain worth $3.5M to $5M a year, Dobbins won't come back for minimum, no offers from #Texans as of this morning.

Dobbins re-signs

#Texanstalk RT @davidcanter: Congratulations to #TeamDEC client Tim Dobbins on agreeing to terms on one year contract with @HoustonTexans

Good deal. I assume he re-signed for minimum, and this doesn't hurt our compensatory picks. Fills a need at backup ILB.

Realy glad to see Dobbins resigned .... depth at ILB in a 3-4 is so important .... as we saw last year.

A team re-signing their own free agents doesn't factor into the compensatory equation.

Dobbins may be marginal, even inferior, in passing & nickel situations but he's solid against the run. Now with him and Sharpton both in the fold, we can breathe a little bit easier about the situation @ ILB. And it also gives us even more flexibility going into the Draft.

I hope you're right. With both coming off IR I'd still like to see a young playmaker added.

The compensatory pick issue has been addressed (he won't hurt us since he was on the roster at the end of last season). It doesn't look like it's a minimum contract, as the minimum for Dobbins would be $840,000.

Tim Dobbins agreed to a one-year contract with the Texans. The deal is worth around $1 million with guarantees of just over $360,000.

This is why I hope to see Brooks Reed at ILB. He's not a pass rusher, he's not going to make a significant amount of plays from the outside. He's JAG on the edges.

I expect more from a 2nd round pick. I think we need to move him to see if he can be that impact player we need on the inside.

At the same time, draft a guy who could be that dynamic end rusher we were missing last year.

Leaving Brooks at OLB doesn't help this team get better. We can draft a young guy to be that dynamic play maker inside, but your entire hope for outside pass rush will rest with Whitney Mercilus.

And even if the guy we draft isn't ready for the position, you can rotate Brooks down in pass rushing situations, where we lose nothing from last year. It would be exactly like what we had last year without an ILB with Brooks, Jj, Antonio, & Whitney on the line.

You just limit your ability to improve on your outside pass rush.

I think Reed is ok as a strong side OLB. ok. Not great...but ok...

Him and Merciless starting next year at the OLB spots worries me....I think Reed would be fine at SOLB if the WOLB is a pass rushing force. I do not believe Merciless is that guy...

But I won't rule guys out. Maybe Merciless can improve his game...Maybe Reed can improve his game...

I don't know...But at this point right now, they scare me. I think we need a better pass rush from the edges.
