Mid to Late Round ILB Prospects

HOU-TEX

Ah, Football!
I'm really just getting in my draft mode lately and I'm beginning to waiver on my initial 1st round ILB pick. The more I've been learning myself up and watching the Combine (as if it means much), I'm starting to question whether any of the ILBs have 1st round talent. I was high on Minter, but now question his coverage abilities after watching a bit of video.

So, considering we'll likely be targeting a 2 down ILB I've begun looking at mid-rounders. I've got 3 thumper type guys I want y'all to 2nd guess for me.

Nico Johnson (Bama) - He's probably my top rated run stuffer. Plus, I love me some Bama backers

Kevin Reddick (NC) - 18.5 TFL's last season

And my longshot pick, A.J. Klein (Iowa St.) - He's a playmaker and has that Watt-type motor. I really like this cat for some reason. A 3rd or 4th pick would be a nice spot to grab him.

What do y'all think?

I can only speak about Reddick, because I have seen him play quite a bit. He is a good player, not sure where he is projected to go at this point. He isn't anything overly special.

I really like Greene out of Rutgers. I have been watching him for some time and he is quite versatile. He can be an asset as a blitzer, a run stopper, and in some coverage situations. From what I have read, he is projected as a second rounder. I would imagine he will be off the board by the time our second rounder rolls around.

I liked watching him do drills. He looks very smooth and fluid.
Isn't he projected as an outside rush type backer?

He looks intriguing. Heck of a two year stint. I'll check him out a bit more

Moore is projected to be an ILB or an MLB (most are leaning to ILB in a 3-4) but from what I've read he could do either ILB in the 3-4 or all 3 spots in a 4-3.

Y'all both have good prospects. I found this posted on Twitter. Looks like all 3 of our guys are in the top percentile in coverage. Mine being my sleeper pick , Klein

Right now I like Moore a lot as a late round prospect.
I might even go 4th round on him.
Very versatile player who can play in or out.
Perfect as a compliment for Cushing, allowing Reed to move back to OLB.

He isn't bad in pass rushing, but I think his coverage skill is better than any one we currently have outside of Cushing.

The knock is his size.

This is the first day I've ever seen Moore, he looked very good in the stack and shed drill that I watched so I looked him up. His combine numbers are really good though so he might rise more throughout this process.

I think we need to take a look at the guy from S Miss.

Besides him, Moore is putting up great numbers so far.
Jamie Collins damn near jumped put of the stadium. 41 1/2" vert good lawd.

EDIT: I see Collins as more of a pass rusher though.

It appears he has everything except experience. He's another DB /LB tweener that might need a year or two before becoming acclimated to the NFL.

Southern Miss went 0-12 this past season. lol

What are the thoughts on Zaviar Gooden out of Mizzou? His name keeps popping up amongst the top of most of the drills & from what I have read his college resume isn't that bad either. He seems a bit small but he seems to have what the Texans need w/ good speed & coverage skills having been a former safety. I kinda like what I've seen & read so far...thoughts??

After watching a couple of his games, my initial thought is that he's a project.
He's very raw with his techniques and I don't think he's very smart/instinctive either; like he's still learning the game.

So much physical abilities; just don't know how to make use of them.

The guy who I like is Gerald Hodges out of Penn State. Did not run like Jon Bostic buy I watched tape on them both and Hodges seems to be around the ball much more and is good in coverage. I think he would be a nice fit in our system. If you have not watched any film on him watch a little and tell me what you think...

I agree on Collins who had fantastic combine. College stats were good also. Seems to need good coaching but has all skills for pass rush and coverage. What impresses me is he did not seem to give up during a win less season. That earns major points from me. Rated #93 (3rd) which seems a bit high.

Any linebacker out there have maybe some ability to cover gronk over in NE. I am not saying the Texans need to reach. With Just Brady signing an extension. We will meet again.

Just wondering if there is someone that might have the size and/or speed
If they had to cover him or Hernandez

There really aren't any linebackers in all of the NFL that can cover Gronk or Hernandez on a consistent basis. We will need to change our gameplan against teams such as the Pats to have success against them. It's not a problem of players but rather scheme.

As I stated after the playoff loss, man coverage is not the answer.

How about this Jake Knott. He didn't finish the season with a shoulder tear and October surgery, but that shouldn't be too serious. 6'-2" ; 243 ; projected 40 about 4.70, which is pretty good. Although listed as an OLB, he also projects inside in a 34. His pro day workout is March 26. Should be available in the late rounds unless he really impresses during the pro day workout. Until his injury, he was rated higher than his teammate Klein, by some. His rehab started in late November.

"The week of Feb. 19 was the “four-month mark” that Dr. Gordon Nuber told Knott would be the time it took for his shoulder to be completely healed. Now Knott is still working on his strength and physical ability, waiting to perform all physical tests until March 26, which is Iowa State’s Pro Day."
