Sports Talk Radio, Texans

I listen to more sports talk radio than I should.

Had a small run in with Josh Innes that exposed me to some really disgraceful radio he is doing. I don't care what he thinks of me, but apparently he cares what I think of his program. I usually do not listen much to him, but if he wants a dialogue on creeper radio, this is it:

My love and hate for sports talk radio

Generally, the solutions to most talk radio is to switch the channel. But when 610 is home of the Texans, it just seems repulsive that we still have this sort of act going on in 2013.

If you have any opinions on this subject, or sports talk radio in general, I urge you to leave a comment there and share the post on FB/Twitter. I know various people at the Texans read my blog, and you never know when you can make a difference with things just by sharing a reasoned opinion on the interwebs.

I was actually listening when he brought up your name and was thinking that guy may not know it, yet, but he's about to get more than he bargained for.

Howard Stern'ism. The gold standard lowest common denominator of creepers. Aspiring to that is, at best, un-original. They already did that routine at 8th grade recess, guys. The balance of it was just kinda mean. If Kate were my sister, I think I would have had to dot a few eyes.

He's wildly inappropriate but I find myself laughing more than gasping. I like him

You see, if you are a hetero and help raise money for a women’s shelter, then you can get paid to say whatever vulgar things you want about women. I’m wondering what he’d feel free to say if he helped raise money for the NAACP. Or hey, I donated to the ASPCA, let me kick some puppies!
That was one of your best blogs. What's sad is that this guy really believes his own pretzel logic.

Let's call it as it is - 610 has gone to $%^* since Lance, John, and Charlie left. Yes, they have the Texans contract. And Texans fans are worse served because of it. I know squat about radio programming, and maybe straight sportstalk without the lame shtick doesn't pull ratings. It's too bad so much has to cater to the lowest common denominator.

He's nothing more than a poorly educated fan with a microphone whose act appeals to largely to his kind.

Unfortunately every slot in the programming day has one person who so blatantly ignorant about sports that it isn't worth listening to the station anymore.

Now that the station director who assembled this group is gone, I expect the lineup to change pretty quickly after new management arrives.

Many of the largest consumer businesses in the world appeal to the lowest common denominator. That's where the customer base is largest. But it doesn't mean that we have to subject ourselves to the garbage they offer.

I have my radio tuned in to 610 most of the time. When I get off work, it is tuned into 790?. I do anything to listen to Zeurlein...sure I messed the spelling up on that one! At lunch I listen to 790 as well for the "in the trenches". I suppose that can get a bit creepy...but it's mostly funny when not directly talking about football. They have really good insight on the game from former players points of view. I enjoy "Texan Chick" and her blog more than Innis..or whatever his name is.

Sounds like somebody is trying to get this Innes guy unemployed or another radio station besides 610 as the Texans' flag-ship station, or maybe both ?
My thoughts - I think allowing women reporters access to the locker rooms of male jocks is about as bright of an idea as putting women into combat units of the military.

Way to keep up with the times...this is the thinking that keeps intact the Caveman mentality.

80-90% of Sports talk radio (i include everywhere) is bullcrap..fans who somehow got into the business or Local sportscasters who try to do a radio show; either way, they all have the same schtick "I'm gonna tell you the way it is; you won't like it but its the truth" somehow implying that they are the only one who can 'bring the truth' to the homers who listen.

Its worn out and tired; there are very few good sportstalkers around- even the national guys suck: Rome, Cowherd, Brando, etc.> no idea how they still have an audience...

Personal agenda's have no place in radio, neother does making fun of, disparaging, dennigrating or flat out laughing at the callers/listeners...

keep looking around; there;s better out there.

I agree. However, unlike the caveman, I respect women too much to put them in a locker room or on the battlefield in harms way. Maybe I am a bit of a neanderthal & my instincts are to protect women and not expose them.

I admit there are women out there that could kick my butt & probably handle a locker room better than me, but my instincts are to protect them. I would not seek access to a woman's locker room for equality.

Truthfully, in I'd rather ban all reporters from the locker room to promote equality. I really don't care to see a bunch of half naked jocks running around in towels.

I just want quality sports talk. Everywhere. My blog is sort of a response to not seeing/hearing the dialogue I wanted to read.

The next time that JI says anything intelligent about the Texans will likely be the first time. Most posters here know more about the team.

FWIW, a while back I got crosswise with Richard Justice. Long story. He messed with me on the radio in a way where it was very awkward because my husband was all wtf. I blogged about it to get RJ to stop because asking my editor to help me was not working until I blogged about it not on the Chron.

Years later, over time, RJ had me as a guest on his radio show, apologized, said nice things about the stuff I do. And that he's come around on the whole issue of journo v. bloggers.

JI asked me on Twitter what was creeper, casually sexist about what he does....which is totally disingenuous given what he said on his show and his stated position that his type of radio is a deliberate choice, and not just a guy being a bleephole dbag.

But maybe his question to me was real. (not likely). Maybe he doesn't realize how retrograde he can be. Sometimes, when you identify an issue with things, you can effectuate change for the better. I've seen it happen.

So I tilt at the windmills. I like redemption stories. Of course, one of the commenters on the blog hoped that JI would go to Dallas to rejoin former 610 guy Gavin Spittle who originally gave him the job. Is it ok for me to wish him on Dallas?

The comments of the blog post are a good read if you are sports talk radio sort. Very much gives a good snapshot of 2013 sports talk radio in Houston.

I like Josh...

I was actually listening when he talked about you, and I actually agreed with his take.

That's nothing against you or anything you write. But on this topic, I agreed with him.

Most people that listen to sports radio listen for maybe 30 mins...maybe an hour at a time I would guess...

There are a lot of people that listen all day though...or for hours at a time...like me...

I hear more than enough sports talk...Texans talk...Rockets talk throughout the day...I listen to the radio as I get ready every morning...I listen on my way to work....I listen at work most of the day...I listen on my way home...I listen as I work out in my garage...

Everyday doesn't go like that (I do like music)...but some days go exactly like that.

I would not listen that long if all they did was talk about sports. The reason I listen is because of the variety of topics and conversations that occur. Plus, like you said, Texanstalk has a wealth of information on the Texans. How much can you talk about the Texans WR situation during the day? The cap space has not changed...nothing has happened draft wise...There's nothing going on right now Texans wise....I love the Rockets, but I normally listen to 790 for my Rockets fix...

I can understand people that tune in when they get into their car or turn on the radio at any given time....But you have to realize that this is an all day thing...they are talking when you aren't listening...

As far as the creeper radio thing....whatever I guess. Howard Stern is much worse, but if that's not your thing I'd say don't listen. I don't find what Josh does disgusting at all. Yeah, it's a little more "shock jock" than what you get from any other radio host, but I think it's funny. I realize it's not for everyone, but I don't consider myself the "lowest denominator" anymore than someone that doesn't like it considers themselves an uptight prude.

My suggestion would be if you don't like it, don't listen. That's the most powerful thing you can do.

Why would anyone listen to 610 anyway? You've got CP, Lance, Matt and Adam on 790 talking real sports. 610 is a joke - official Texans station or not. And it's not like the Texans have anything to say anyway other than banal platitudes from Shaub or Kubiak.

I haven't listened to JI in awhile . He's like the loser guy who everyone knows and wants to talk about his loserhood . He's also got that , everything is bad , stuff that gets old . He bad luck sleprock .

I tried switching to 790, but it's just not the same (I do listen to Koch & Kalu). I like 610, because during the season they have the most Texans' shows. I like to hear what the players say the week after a game. I know they don't get asked the "tough" questions, & they don't tell Schaub how bad he sucks, but it's better than imagining what they're thinking, like one particular poster likes to do.

However, since the end of the season, it's been more fodder than anything & it gets tedious. I know it's hard for them to come up with stuff to talk about, (I listen to the radio while I'm at work), but that's what they're paid to do. We've got the Texans & the Rockets. A lot going on with both of those clubs. Should be plenty to talk about.

Schaub topics pretty much rule the message board, but that's starting to die down & we're moving on to FA & the draft & there's no doubt in my mind that the people here on this board know more about FA & the draft than those guys do, and I can think of three guys who could put together 8 hours of draft talk & that's not including phone calls.

I refuse to listen to that DB. I cant stand him.

My lineup:
10-12 - ND & Greg
12-3 - Matt Thomas
3-7 - Charlie & Lance

So pretty much, I don't even listen to 610, and Josh is the main reason. He turned me off from the whole station.

I used to be a frequent caller over a decade ago (late '90s) when Rich Lord and Kenny Hand had the best sports-radio show in the city. It was fun calling in every day to talk about the Astros (who were good at the time), Rockets and Cowboys - we had no NFL team during those years.

And I pretty much stayed away from sports-talk radio from 2000 to 2007. And then in 2008, I started to enjoy the David Nuno show on 1560 The Game. And some of the other guys working there all did a great job.

I have not really called into a local sports show since 2008 though. I'm in my early 30's already and sports is just not what it used to be for me. Before I thought it was the most important thing in life, but I guess having a family and becoming a born-again Christian will change a man's way of thinking.

I listen to sports talk just about every time I'm in the car.

Agree with his take? His take was INACCURATE, DISINGENUOUS, or and by the way, also completely dismissive of me which I guess he is entitled to do because that's just his opinion, man.

But do you get that he completely made up what I said?! Completely. Made up a strawman. A fabrication. And put it on the radio for all of Houston to hear because I guess it is totally ok to make up **** if you are entertaining the masses.

Completely invented that I attacked Seth and Mike. (I put all the tweets in my blog post so people could see how bad JI's fabrication was. You can tell its a fabrication because I repeatedly, explicitly said I had no problem with the Upton interview and no problem specifically with Seth and Mike).

I did not say I had a problem with a Kate Upton interview. I did not say I had a problem with Mad Radio. I have ZERO problem with hosts talking about things other than sports. I have ZERO problem with hosts talking about women or sex stuff in a way that is not creepy crawly and sexist.

He cowardly made up a story because he was teh sad that I talked about some radio as being creeper radio.

But just as some people would feel outraged with sports talk that was relentlessly racist, I don't like sports talk that is mean and sexist. And yeah, I don't listen to JI regularly, and would have not heard his long, boring, mean, sexist recap of the Upton interview but for the fact that someone said that JI said stuff about me (which I learned when I heard the interview was inaccurate).

And yeah, I change the channel. Fortunately, there are now better options. But it totally sucks because I write about the Texans and so much Texans content is on that blasted channel because official sponsor. Really, the only hopeful thing that has happened lately on 610 is the addition of Seth Payne. Who is VERY funny. And who is very knowledgeable about football and the Texans in particular. Who actually was at training camp on a regular basis.

So in sum, in this very small interaction with him, JI was 1. a big fat liar; 2. picked a fight with me so that he could denigrate me and my blog (whatev dude); 3. and then did an entire stupid bit that was boring and sexist and mean.

If he lies about something as stupid as this, why should anyone have any use for him at all as a radio personality other than just trainwreckness? My limited interaction with him was repulsive in every respect, and it sickens me that he lied about what I said (about people who I like) for a stupid, awful radio bit.

But hey, if he works for you, go for it.

Steph, I have listened to talk radio since the days of Anita Martini & programming has deteriorated. It has gone to "entertainment" rather than sports talk. The devolving (if that is a word) is what I call bathroom humor; many think it humorous, but not me. John McClain's side trips into movies moved me down the dial. It reminds me of turning into a news station about 9-11 and the towers then watching talking heads pop jokes & having to watch some "celebrity" tell me what she/he thinks. I want info and debate on sports not Inness crap. I now work from my home which should increase my sports radio time over and above the hour drive to and from work I use to have. Not so. I have tried to listen to Rich Lord as I do have some respect for him, but then Josh I. and his ego came along. Not too long ago, I turned on 610 and heard Innes spouting about how he and Lord had done historical programming and blah, blah, blah. I almost called in but controlled my emotions. He just does not seem to understand that 610's ratings have more to do with Texans' contract than his "brilliance." IMO, Josh Innes is the worst talking head on the radio. Reminds me of a little girl in her first dress running around screaming "look at me everybody. Look at me!"

Thanks to podcasts those of us who are far away from Houston at times still get to hear the broadcasts and "In The Trenches" is definitely my favorite because it so emphasizes Football, NFL football, and especially Texans' Football.
Now Lance is very knowledgeable about football for someone who's not played the game, but in other areas I sorta feel that he's over matched with the brainy and very articulate CP ?
Regarding Josh, the first time I heard him I thought he was a total jerk, but after hearing him another time or two I'm actually starting to find him kinda amusing ? But he's definitely off-the-wall and would turn many off very quickly.

Have you tried streaming? If you go to the station's website, they usually have a "listen live" link & you don't have to wait for the podcasts.

Lance is ok, I don't have a problem with Lance. My issue is that when he says something, people think it's gospel. I've seen a couple of his articles, where he breaks down a play & he says this should happen, or that was supposed to happen & unless he was in the film room with the team when they broke down the tape & developed their strategy, he doesn't know any more than we do.

'76 does as good a job, I think better, because he tells you there are options. A WR have so many options at their disposal, that a DB has to put himself in position to cover the worse options, or the most likely option & use team mates (LBs & other DBS), the sidelines, and such to his advantage.

While there are some that don't want to agree, '76s break down of our secondary in Kj's rookie year was much more accurate than Zeirline's & it's easy to see the step changes from then to now with '76s take. It looked like an impossibility if you followed Zierline's.

& it's the same with the OL, the DL, the LBs.... we don't know what they're supposed to do, but we can evaluate their options & understand why they chose to do what they did. Then decide if it's a talent issue, a brains issue, a scheme issue, a technique issue, a communication issue, etc... The only thing we can't fix are talent issues but you can scheme around them.

Agree, Seth is hilarious and knows what he's talking about. Hopefully the powers that be will choose more "Seth" and less "Innes" going forward. Substance keeps me listening, shtick prompts me to change stations.

Well 'duh' Steph!! ;)

Personally, I haven't listened to 610 since John and Lance left. It got even worse after that whenever the rest of the guys left. 610 is not only a former shell of itself, it downright sucks!!

I wake up to sports talk, its in the truck when I'm driving, and I listen to sports talk while I'm working. On my alarm clock I listen to it at night when I lay down to go to sleep, come 12:00 AM though, its time for Coast to Coast. :tinfoil: :littlelol:

I spend a lot of my day listening to Christian radio.

I listen to the occasional Mike and Mike in the morning. But have turned off all the other sports talk radio.

They seemed to just make up stuff to talk about most days. One day they would be for the Astos or Rockets, or Texans and how good they are, then the next it was the total opposite - how bad they were.

You can get all the info - and usually correct info right here. Without all the stupid, incorrect garbage that is on the radio. Plus no commercials.

I love 76's breakdowns on plays/games. After watching football for 60+ years, but not playing the game, he makes it very easy to understand the plays and who is supposed to do what - when.

And most people put some thought into what they post, unlike the callers on the radio who do not think before they open their mouth and show how stupid they really are.

I used to like to listen to Carl Dukes on 97.5 However, I think it was early in the 2010 season & we got off to a good start. The Cowboys got off to a bad start. He started a big deal, that the reason was because we had leaders in our locker room & Dallas didn't.

Then we proceeded to get the crap beat out of us, including a butt whooping from the Cowboys.

Agree about Seth Payne. He is great on the radio and I absolutely love his dynamic with Mike Meltzer (who I also like because I identify with his geekyness.) Their show is downright fantastic and is the first show I listen to religiously on 610 since John and Lance left.

Josh Innes is utter trash. Simple as that.

Y'all know who is funnier than Seth Payne? His wife @brandispayne

She is awesome! Those two together are awesome!!!

Again, on twitter: @brandispayne

OK - I listened to it, and Josh "taking umbrage" at the beginning wasn't over-the-line, just radio guy sticking up for radio guy.

Then it happened...

Josh starts taking shots and doing his best to belittle Steph and her "little blog". If he'd taken the high road and just stated the he'd agree to disagree, it'd be one thing. He chose to take the standard JI path of "I can't match you, so I'll try to bring you down".

I've had disagreements with Steph over her take on certain issues over the years, but I never felt any necessity to take this route.

Why? I guess it's because I'm not trying to be a sports-radio shock jock, and I'm trying to have an informed debate. It's also because I have great respect for her. Sure, blogging about the Texans seems like a dream job to many and in some ways I'm sure it is. It also means growing a pretty thick skin. Just like politics, you're going to have a sizeable group that vehemently disagrees with what you're saying. That's fine from your average respondee on Chron.com, but it's not supposed to be acceptable from the "professional" community.

Well there you go, getting paid for something does not make one a professional.

I really enjoy sports talk radio. And judging from my sense of humor most can see I don't mind silly non-sports related bs talk and sophmoric humor. But Innes is not funny. And he's not entertaining. He belongs on radio, but not on sports radio. If they have to keep him I wish they'd move him to 1:00 am to 6:00am. Yes Josh we all have heard that you have anxiety issues, that your dad did scooby doo voices, that your ex gf got a boob job and left you, that black people 'like you' blah blah blah. Yes we've heard it, over and over and over and over. This guy's schtick is to be funny, but he's simply not funny. He is just obnoxious. He's a douche bag frat boy. It sucks that Innes is on the Texans flagship station. I've tried to give him another listen but it's always the same lame try too hard to be funny morning zoo radio crap.

I miss John Breen, Jerry Trupiano and Joel Buschsbaum on sportstalk 740am (740 was the Oiler flagship). Talk radio in general was more dignified and classier back then (except for Moby in the Morning of course). Josh Innes is trying to be the Rush Limbaugh of sportstalk. He's all about reaction and doesn't care how he gets it. Listening to him is LCD stuff. If you like insults, childish rants and self-absorbed humor he's probably for you.

I miss John Breen, Jerry Trupiano and Joel Buschsbaum on sportstalk 740am (740 was the Oiler flagship).
Listened to Trup and Joel for years with their draft talk. Also would listen to Art, Anita, and Mel Kiper. My regret is that I never called in to talk with Joel and ask him a question. I don't know why I didn't. He really tapped into a interest in the draft the NFL never knew existed. Now, it's more than a cottage industry for the NFL and many internet draft gurus. They owe it all to Joel and his fans.

Josh Innes is utter trash. Simple as that.

QFT. I cannot even begin to describe how utterly pathetic he is as a talk radio host.

I'd rather shave my head with a cheese grater while chewing aluminum foil before giving his extremely irritating voice two seconds of my time.

It's actually an insult to trash and garbage to compare it to Josh Innes.

Y'all know who is funnier than Seth Payne? His wife @brandispayne

She is awesome! Those two together are awesome!!!

Again, on twitter: @brandispayne

Seth's unadulterated and unpolished takes are a breath of fresh air! My dad and I both dig his show, but we wonder how long it will take before management reels him in and tones him down.

Do you remember the Three Amigos sports show? Way back in the early '90's before there were dedicated sports radio stations and you had to know when sports talk shows would be aired on news radio to hear them. That was Ed Fowler, Dan Patrick, and I think Kenny Hand. It was all about sports and none of this idiotic "guy talk" and low brow Howard Stern wannabe garbage that many shows are aping these days.

I still miss Joel Buschsbaum. That dude was a football genius, and nobody has come along to replace his presence on sports radio.

Back in the day, I actually won a contest to fill in for the 3 Amigos. They had an essay contest on why you should be the person that fills in while they have to leave early to their TV gig stuff.

So then the show was me and John O'Reilly. At it was actually one of my favorite gigs I ever did because instead of it just the host asking me questions, it was callers asking a wide variety of sports questions, including some sports law questions too.

So basically, you saw the call in board, and you had a sense of what they were going to ask but not really. It was a lot of fun.

This was obviously pre-blog, pre-Texans. Very, very fun. I didn't tell anyone that I was going to do it. I was surprised at hearing from people who heard it.

(Also one of the reasons I'm not too keen on radio hosts saying rude, untrue things about me on their shows. People listen to this stuff, sometimes believe it).

Actually, most of the people who visit my blog are respectful, and disagree without being disagreeable. More often than not, I try to model that behavior, and don't encourage saying silly things to get a reaction. Typically, if you tend to be reasonable and give reasons for your point of view, people tend to be reasonable back.

The folks that aren't that way, I figure it says more about them than me more often than not.

Oh, and I'm always right. At least according to Wade Phillips on Twitter:

About fell out of my chair when I saw that tweet.

Ah, the memories! After Fowler moved to a golf show on weekends, I called him and he asked what my golf question was. I just wanted to talk to him about the switch. Cool guy but would not go into why he gave up the other program. I had talked to him several times before & often disagreed but he never belittled me. I want to say he cowrote a book with someone. I know Mickey Herskowicz wrote several.

My wife just bought me one of Ed Fowler's books at Christmas. She found a used copy at Half Priced Books:

Loser Takes All: Bud Adams, Bad Football, & Big Business
