Hindsight: What should the Texans have done?

Now that the draft is over and I didn't get any selections from any of my picks, looking back what should the Texans have done? This isn't a "blast the Texans" thread and we all know that hindsight is 20/20. But what do you we should have done knowing how the draft went.

Here's one scenario:

1st round
10th pick - Dunta Robinson

2nd round
40th pick - Bob Sanders SS 5-8 204
or Michael Boulware SS 6-2 223

3rd round
72 pick - Donnell Washington DT 6-5 323

4th round
103rd pick - Will Allen FS 6-1 193

5th round
138th pick - Michael Turner RB 5-10 237

6th round
170th pick Cody Spencer ILB 6-2 242
200th pick Isaac Hilton OLB 6-3 251

7th
211th pick Brian Rimpf OT 6-5 319
248th pick Symons, B.J. QB 6-0 210

Not bad, I would have taken Sean Jones FS in the second, Issac Spoage NT in the 3rd, Earl was a good selection in the fourth, and the rest I like the way yours looks (maybe not the RB in the 5th, stay with Duff)

I can't decide now. When it happened, I was livid about what I percieved as a reach to take Babin. We DO need an edge rusher, but I felt like we still needed to address d-line as well. With the additional 4th rounder from the Colts, we basically moved up and only gave up a 3rd round pick and dropped 21 slots in the 5th. Not as horrible as it initially reads when you see "Texans trade 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and swap down in the 5th to take Babin."

I agree. I think that we did exactly what we needed to do. Everyone is sceptical about CC trading up to get a guy that nobody besides myself seems to know about, in Jason Babin, but everyone knows how CC likes to have draft picks, so if he gave some up, he must know something about Babin. I think the Texans defense will wreck shop next year!

I agree also, I think Houston got just who they wanted to get. They think that Dunta and Babin can fill the spots in the "D" to get us on the right track. NO WAY they give up those picks on a "Hunch" they knew what they were doing if Babin was there that late in the 1st they were going to go get him and call it a day, that's just what they did and I have a feeling people who keep complaing about how we wasted picks will have to eat there words 2-3 years down the road. :)

We must not have been to far off because everyone is giving us a "B" grade and talking about what a perfect fit Babin will be in our system.

You have to include Hollings as our 2nd round pick for this draft as well. So we ended up with

CB Dunta Robinson
LB Jason Babin
RB Tony Hollings

all of those were in the top 33. 3 picks in the top 33 for the 2004 draft is fine with me, I am just asking the question of what would we have done different.

T Hollings was a mistake. I think he'll be one heck of a RB, BUT he isn't a good fit with the Texans now that we have D Davis. But who expected D Davis to be this good.

Babin and D Rob were good picks, I just wish we didn't have to give up the rest of our 1st day picks. I wish we could've had a 3rd rounder left on 1st day.

In reality we only lost one pick. We gave a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. We got a 1st and 5th. We swapped 5th's, got their 1st for our second, and the 3rd or 4th was either a compensatory pick or a pick we had from another team, so in reality we only gave up 1 pick.

Your math doesn't work. To move up a few spots we had to give up a 3rd and 4th (that's 2 picks not one...it doesn't matter where the picks came from, we still surrendered them to get Babin) plus we gave up a few spots in the 5th.

It does matter where the picks come from, but if you think about it Casserly loves picks for these situations- the flexibility it offers. The Texans stockpile picks year after year by trading for picks the next year and eventually it allows us to either use all of those picks or to trade up for the player that we did all that work for. Just to take the point to another level, we did give up a lot of pick value, but considering the Hollings pick we had doubles in both rounds 2 and 4. So, even though it is a reach to say it, the doubled picks that we obtained from other people allowed us to make this deal and only give up our third pick to move into the first, this is obviously considering that we used our "original" pick to draft Hollings in the supplemental draft.

My first reaction to Babin trade was that we had given up too much. Like Detroit got an extra 2nd round pick from Browns ( stupid move!),then move back in 1st from KC ( 2004 4th and 2005 5th,also) to get Kevin Jones. or Indy's trade out of 1st. ( weak draft, indy) Still, if Babin becomes the pass rusher the Texans have been looking for since their birth,it was a good move. I think the Texans got 3 impact players in this draft, Robinson,Babin ,and Earl. Duff will help us in our return game. Thomas, Orr, and Symons could be useful players. IMO, the last two drafts have been better than 2002 draft (Carr,Pitts).

If we could just have come away with Sapoaga, in addition to our other picks, the Texans' draft would have been close to perfect...

I was actually hoping for DL help instead of LB help this season. I was hoping we where going to stockpile an extra pick (beside the Henson deal) to possibly get a shot at Derrick Johnson at UT next year. Yes he will be going high in the draft but I was wishing that would be the case :o
