"Welker's not aj green" -wade

GRONKED

Practice Squad
Right off nfl.com front page.

Wade goes on to say "welker's a good player, but he's not that big or a real athletic guy".

I get what hes saying...but as a pats fan, its music to my ears. Pretty well documented that guys like wes have a chip on their shoulder and thrive off comments like these.

However you wanna label him, wes is elite and as fn productive as they come. Id watch out for him sunday to have a big day esp with gronk likely drawing dbl teams.

To be fair, wades comments arent far off nor all that bad...but as the article indicates, bulletin board material.

Welker is not AJ Green, but the problem may be that Dalton is no Brady.

We know what happens when you put a true elite WR on that team...well they were one game away from perfection and put up crazy numbers.

Quite frankly, the league is lucky that Welker is not AJ Green.

Sorry about the above post.

Anyway, I don't think he means anything by it except to say that they are different players that you cover in different ways. Welker killed us last game, so I hope we have a good plan in place to stop him this time around.

Yeah Patriots fans, our bravado, cocky, trashtalking Wade Phillips is totally underestimating this five year veteran that he schemed against one month ago.

Welker is FARRRRRRRR from elite, AJ is elite, Calvin Johnson is Elite, These 2 guys could play anywhere and be elite. Welker is the product of the system, (short routes that are guranteed to gain yards) Thats why he always has so many catches and not near the yards that guys like AJ and CJ have. Same goes with woodhead and all those players that look good while there and then are never heard from again when they leave.

It was that way with Stokley when he was with the colts, and after he left he vanished until him and Manning were reunited again this year.

So in all honesty i would say Brady makes guys look elite.

Pretty sure some of it was taken out of context by Rosenthal. Anyway here is Phillips response on twitter.

Wade's gonna have Welker controlled this time.

It's the boys whose socks can't reach their pants that I'm more concerned with this game.

Context my friend, context..... We understand that you are inundated with BSPN's continuous northeast propaganda, but rest assured that @sonofbum (AKA Wade Phillips) is NOT underestimating Welker...

Screw bulletin material..... Do you think anyone in the Texans locker room is sweating that hack that you have at the Boston Globe - Stan ****ahoaughsy?? I think not, but your local station (aka known as BSPN) made a big deal about Arian Foster changing his avatar to ****tysees column.. If y'all knew anything about Arian Foster, he was laughing at those comments. SHYTE like that is not what motivates him. BTW Arian changes AVI's more often than the average German changes underwear.

According to BSPN and most major outlets, the Texans shouldn't even fly to Boston this weekend... If that's the case, why even play the game.

In conclusion, I don't expect the Texans to win, nor do I expect that close of a game, but as a fan... I can hope.

Where does Boston fan get off being so arrogant? The Patriots were an abysmal team for longer stretches than the Texans have even been in existence. The Red Sox, were really, really............ REALLY bad until their last few years of success.

Third man--never said im disagreeing w wade...just saying those words are begging to be twisted.

76Texan..sure? Ive heard of some weak crap motivate some top notch athletes. Brady cried recently talking about the Brady 6...I mean, rlly?

Ellis...I wont argue that in most systems w most qbs he wouldnt be special. But gotta acknowledge that, as is, over the last 5 years his ##s compare well anyones..and is a huge reason pats are so effective on offense.

Did he ever got fined for violating the NFL uniform code.

PS - I spell it out for the Pats fans who may not know that Kareem Jackson was fined for wearing socks too high.

Ok then i cant really say he is elite then. AJ was elite with David Carr at QB. An Elite players makes other players whom are average look elite there for meet Mr Brady and Bill B who has made Welker look elite.

Thats all i'm saying.

You dont go throwing around a system guy and call him elite unless he could be productive anywhere.

I'm sure Welker has heard worse throughout his life.

But hey, if it makes you happy, go for it :)

Welker put up good numbers in his second season with a mixture of Cleo Lemon, Joey Harrington, and a broken Daunte Culpepper at QB.

In 5 of his last 6 seasons Welker has topped 110 catches and 1100 yards. The guy is a possible future Hall of Famer.

With that said, he's not AJ Green. Green is bigger, faster, and stronger than almost anybody he goes against. He is the exact opposite of Wes Welker and that's what I took out of Wade's comment. Welker is shifty and runs great routes, he doesn't go up and grab the ball at it's highest point like Green or Andre.

Would anybody be upset if it was 2007 and Wade said Welker isn't Randy Moss?

Not saying he isnt "good" but he is not elite. His elite QB makes everyone around him look elite. He cant even step on the same field as AJ or CJ or AJG.

I'm not saying you're "wrong" but just that you are not right. He is a top 10 WR in this league and has been for a long time. I would put my money on him making the Hall.

"Welker's not aj green"

He's right, if you look closely you can tell that Welker is not AJ Green.

AND BTW Boston fans, errrrrr Foxborough Mass fans were the most arrogant, ignorant fans ever during Super Bowl XXXVIII (if that's right, I meant SB 38, here in Houston).......... Lost so much respect that I was a Carolina Panther fan that night.

LONG LIVE BSPN!! :gun:

Yep. He really made cassel look good that one year...and really elevates Bradys game too.

No, Brady doesn't need any one target...but when wes was injured or successfully taken out of the game, Brady doesn't look nearly as sharp or comfortable.

I guess the wes isn't great without Brady argument has some merit, but so does belichick isn't the same without Brady, Brady isnt as good without his system or oline, etc. Pointless argument imo..boils down to, right now, hes a matchup nightmare and top 5 wr.

Btw, pats fans see these comments differently. If anyone cares to link this same thread from patsfans forum...comments range from "lol thats why wade defenses never beat Brady" to "that's the worst possible thing wade could have said". Imo wesll be good for 10 catches, 100 plus yds

After the Dan Shaughnessy episode Texan fans and players believed his article would light a fire under Houston which would give them a competitive edge. Well, Philips may have just negated that advantage by claiming that Wes Welker, the leading receiver over the last two seasons, is "not that athletic" and doesn't require having the Texans best CB on him.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...phillips-wont-put-best-defender-on-wes-welker

Now, a lot of what he says is true (much like a lot of what Shaughnessy said was true.) Welker is much better in the slot than on the outside and he isn't big. But claiming he isn't very athletic was a dumb thing to say. This has already circled around to Pats players. Not only will Welker be more motivated now, but so will Brady. Welker is a favorite target for Brady and their connection on the field is unreal. They are also great friends off the field.

Thanks Wade!

Nah, there's a better probability of Jackson knocking Welker out than for him to get 10 catches and a century :)

A) He isn't very athletic, but neither was Steve Largent... or are you old enough to remember Steve Largent?

B) Bullshyte!!! If Patriots players are somehow circling the comments, than the Texans have half a chance. DUDE, be real... These cats don't give a damn about the rats ass with regards to comments taken way out of context, especially as reported by the northeast's gate guardian, BSPN.

Just saying with an average to below average QB welker wouldn't be half the player he is. AJ had 4 long years of David carr and was still one of the leagues best. That's something to be said. You think people will remember who threw AJ the ball ? Do you think people will remember who threw welker the ball ? Having a future HOF QB and coach def help, what has AJ had ? My point is without them with his skill set alone welker is not in the HOF, and even so he don't stand toe to toe with guys like AJ and CJ.

Ok...how do you compare welker to greg Jennings? Colston? Reggie Wayne?

They all have elite qbs and great offensive systems, but wes's ##s blow theirs away. They also have more of the tangibles you associate w great wrs.

If you rank him ahead of them...we're probably talkin top 5

Pats fans need to figure out if their players believe in bulletin board material or not.
Y'all have some yahoo in here saying crap like "tuning out outside influences is institutionalized in Foxboro" in one sentence, and then the very next sentence saying Arian Foster's tweets are bulletin board material for the Pats. He said both of these in the same post, mind you.

Then you clowns are here trying to drum up some drama over what is a very benign statement by Wade Phillips.
Completely un-controversial statement that Pats fans are now trying to whip into some frenzy that will propel their team to victory or some such nonsense.

Listen, chowderheads, you are fans. Your imagined and/or manufactured indignation over a silly statement is not going to be the spark that ignites a revolution. Quit trying to mojo your team to victory. There is no controversy, so stop making asses out of yourselves by trying to create one.

Oh, and Sam Adams beer sucks. That's a true, yet sad statement. I am a beer lover, and I really want to like Sam Adams beer, but I've tried virtually every one of them, and they all suck.

I didn't think that the Patriots would be motivated by being two games away from the Superbowl, but I'm sure they are now. Thanks a lot, Wade.

This is the second awesome thread started by Pats fans. I can tell it's a college town.

so who was covering Welker last game Jackson or J joe

who ever it was i say switch it

put Jackon on Loyd and J joe on Welker

You guys should read the whole interview, instead of the highlights that some media person wanted to use to stir things up.

Wade never said Welker was not a good receiver, he was answering a question about covering Welker.

Why?

Welker had three catches for 56 yards, 3 catches on 11 targets. Sure, a lot of drops, but I like Kjax & Harris on Welker. They're more physical.

Neither has the speed to keep up with Lloyd, nor the ups. Jjo will do a fine job on him.

I'd be more worried about Stalworth, if he's still got his speed, we'll have to beat him with scheme.

MSR....One minute they are here telling us that if our players are using that article as bulletin board material then we don't stand a chance to begin with......then they start a thread about bulletin board material for Wes and a "thanks Wade" for firing up Welker. Which one is it? :blah:

I'm pretty sure Wade understands that Welker tore his d up before and would be happy to do it again.

I'm pretty sure Wade understands that Welker tore his d up before and would be happy to do it again.

When was this?

Wade had a very benign game in December. 3 catches on 11 targets for 56 yards. He's probably the only Patriot looking for a do-over.

Basically he's saying that world-class athletes like Green are at a different athletic level than slow, plodding midget white guys like little Welk, and that's the truth. Does the truth bother you ?
Hey listen, is there any of you guys in New England who actually like football better than ice hockey or lacrosse ? And do they even play scholastic football in that part of the country, I've often wondered ?

He's been on IR for a month now

Don't think Phillips was denigrating Welker.

Comparing him to traditional WR's is missing the point

Welker almost doesn't play the traditional WR role. He IS, the player who defined the modern slot receiver. If he plays 5 more years, he would project to be #2 in NFL career receptions and top 15 in yards.

When you look at Welker his TPC is ~ 2 less than an elite traditional WR like A Johnson or other HOF type WR.

If Welker maintains his performance level for another few years he should get in the HOF.

Welker BTW is a big reason why it is very hard to blitz Brady. He does a great job reading the D pre snap and get to the right spot.

BTW the 3 cone drill time is probably more valuable to a slot receiver than the 40 time.... ;)

So Pats fans think Welker is in fact AJ Green?

Physically and far as their games go, it's not even close. It's covering two very different but very good WRs.

I don't think its bulletin board material, but you know Billichek is going to be pressing his players buttons regardless.

I'm not so much worried about Welker and the outside game of the Pats, it's going to be dealing with Hernandez and having Gronk back in the middle of the the defense.
