Sharpton put on IR today...Per Chronicle

Can't keep Sharpton on the field so that means we need to find his replacement this off-season. I still don't know if we're that hard up at LB though. I mean, we could definitely use one but not more than we need a G or RT. Also after Joseph and Jackson we got absolutely nothing at CB. Lots of guys you can't depend on.

Then there's Tate. Can't keep him on the field either. RB we can always find but Tate's a step up from what we usually back Foster up with. Going to miss him when he goes away.

Plus we still have to factor in who we'll need to trade or release to fix whatever damage Smith has done to the cap this year. Watch us trade AJ and cut Wade Smith because we can't manage a cap. Seems crazy I know but I didn't expect to see DeMeco and Winston going out the door last year and I doubt Smith's any better at keeping track of the money than he was then.

Really? We have Cushing and thats pretty much it as far as star/stud players go in the entire LB unit. That is simply not going to cut it if we want to be truly dominant on that side of the ball.

Reed has had a down year but that's not to say he can't or won't bounce back. The same could be said for Barwin. We don't know what they're going to do but I do know one thing. The last time the Texans had star/stud depth at LB they couldn't afford to keep it. We need Cushing back and maybe one guy to go with him I'll admit but IR-proof depth isn't in our future.

Completely disagree. How is Cushing even going to return from his injury? We have so many questions right now in this unit it is a major concern for this team imo. Having another stud player next to Cushing could change everything when it comes to playing elite QBs.

Again, the OL and the LB need the most work... Outside of QB. Get these in order and we are as good as last years teamin the trenches and on D.

Looks likes injuries will dominate his career.

As I posted a long time ago, loss of knee motion is common following complete quadriceps tendon ruptures. Especially problematic is lack of full knee extension. While some studies have reported no deficit in muscle strength, most studies report long-term decreases in muscle strength in anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 of cases. Despite the frequency of muscle weakness, most seem to tolerate their strength deficit well. However, because of the above mentioned residual deficiencies, chronic compensatory injuries such as has been the case with Sharpton's hip problems are unfortunately not uncommon.

I dont see the point in keeping Sharpton i like his play (When he gets to play) i think the staff need to do away with the Sharpton project and look for another solid ILB in the draft. This year we starter the season with NO rookies starting. Next year i can see 3-4 starting to start the season.

What are you talking about concerning cap? We should be about $5m under and can adjust salaries to come up with much more. Dutchrudder has a tagged post on cap you should review. Chris Olsen has gotten us out of cap hell.

I swear the position we can't afford injuries the last 2 years seems like the only position that keeps getting depleted.
last year QB
this year LB

I think we could use another good LB.

Reed is still unproven IMO and Barwin is on a contract year and has not really impressed which concerns me. Usually contract years = monster season

this should mark the end of the sharpton project.

looked good early, but when he had time this year, he was just a brute who didnt show much technique at the position. consistently beat in the passing game, and overrunning plays on the ground. area of need in the offseason.

demeco for all his issues was still perfoming this year, sure could have used those 100 tackles on this team.

Hasn't Sharpton made it on IR every year he has played for us?

End of his rookie year (2010)............IR for surgery for dislocated shoulder

End of 2011............IR for quad tendon rupture

End of 2012.............IR for compensatory hip problem

This is probably the end of Sharpton's career. Wish him the best in his future endeavors. As far as the future of the ILB corp, it looks extremely shaky. Even if Cushing makes a full recovery, is he ever going to be the same? These kinds of injuries are always very hard to come back from and especially for someone like Cushing who give it his 110% on every play. I think the FO will not only have to draft ILBs but they have to make a major signing in FA. We don't have anyone on our team currently who is a viable starter long term.

Four year contract would not stop the Texans from either keeping him and hoping for the best next year...........or releasing him once off of IR.

Originally from The National Football Post:

The Texans have signed fourth-round linebacker Darryl Sharpton to a four-year contract.

Sharpton received the standard base salaries of $320,000, $405,000, $490,000 and $575,000, a fourth-year escalator clause and a signing bonus slightly less than the $538,250 that Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Williams received as the pick directly above him.

I dont understand why the texans seemed so excited about his return when he came back from injury.

He doesn't flash when you watch the team play. He had that pretty good pre season as a rookie though....seemed like a player...

But I don't see him as some big time player. Seems like a dime a dozen type guy.

My thoughts exactly. Hate to see anyone go on the IR, but from a football standpoint, he's just another guy. Texans started the season with Brian Cushing and several guys ranging from "Just A Guy" to scrub at ILB. Not sure why they thought they'd be OK at linebacker.

I agree with the dime a dozen comment, but he was attacking the LOS much better than either James or Dobbins were. Big drop from Cushing, but he brought at least some of it back to our game.

I was being a smart ass about our getting into cap trouble and having to give up Winston/Ryans. I mean, how in the world can we possibly afford more stud players when we couldn't figure out how to budget for the ones we already had?

I see teams making moves and being ready for those moves but I never see good teams running off key components of their team because the screwed the pooch on the cap without some kind of plan.

I was just saying we'll screw that up too. Pessimism wrapped in candy coated sarcasm shell.

yeah, think the days of depending on sharpton's health are over, but keeping him around and hoping for his health (and honestly improved play) is what I am expecting.

Sharpton was just a warm body anyway....he was a bad draft pick from the get go. I've been underwhelmed by his play when healthy. All he can do is cover in the flat. He wasn't physical enough up front, not a good gap filler and is slow to read and react. Jay Foreman was twice the player he is.
