NFL Network Playbook AFC

SPEED KILLS
Anyone else watching? I dont know when they tape the show (tonite, Friday is the first airing) but Sterling Sharpe just said Brice McCain needs to "step up", "play big" and "will have his hands full" as the nickel corner against New England. WTF?????

And Sterling, Donovan McNabb and Brian Baldinger all picked the Pats.

Playbook used to have some OK analysis last year. This year their analysis is very superficial. It's just terrible...why even bother to air a program. Occasionally, they get good input from Brian Billick, but he is not a regular.

For me, NFL Matchup with Ron Jaworski is the best program out there.

That's interesting, because I can't stand Jaws.

I think the guys on play-book do a pretty good job. I don't watch it much any more don't have the time. But I do DvR it & catch the Texans part of the show nearly every week.

McNabb made a good point about our LBs looking lost in pass coverage. I've said so many times. Most of the guys who share their analysis have said so as well. Our LBs aren't very good at pass coverage. I think Cushing was the best, but that's not really saying much.

Rudd intrigues me. I'd like to see him get more snaps because he "appears" to get it. If he can truly cover a zone, it would expand what Wade can do a lot more.

But TEs & Fullbacks generally kill us because our LBs don't understand pass coverages.

Baldie talked about the Pats run at the teeth of the Dolphins defense while they have a hat on a hat; that's not the teeth of the D.

Then he talked about how they ran for 2 yards, but he didn't mention that they were stuffed 4 times after that play and had to settle for a FG, LOL.

Our LBs have played much better of late in both phases.

The Pats don't have the Gronk.
In all reality, we should have the advantage.

Brady won't have as much time as he often does.
He's still very dangerous, but if we can limit the play like we should, I think we match up very well with them, seeing how their line has seen health issues at least as much as ours.

Another thing is that one of their RBs, Bolden, just comes back from a 4-game suspension for PED.

Not even sure if he's going to play; even if he does, he will probably be a little rusty.

On the other hand, Tate has had the chance to knock the rust out.

Our O-line is healthier than theirs, with Ben Jones improving week by week and Brandon Brooks showing some nastiness.

Watt should be able to take advantage of their RT Vollmer, who's been bothered by his back.

Their two guards are young and unproven.
Watt had "for the most part" dominated Cannon in the Rose Bowl a few years back, unless they double-teamed him.

Watt has become a monster since then.
I expect another good showing from 99; let's hope the weather doesn't turn too nasty.

eh....

I don't really care to debate the merits of McNabb's analysis. Just pointing out he made an astute observation that I agree with. Then he demonstrated that weakness with video evidence from our most recent games.

I didn't see that part.

Which game(s) were you talking about?

The one that Sharpton missed his coverage near the endzone that allowed an easy TD?

He showed clips from the Titans game, the Lions game, & the Broncos game I think.

They showed Mia running the ball vs the Pats D. In 2 of the 3 plays they showed Bush with wide open cut back lanes instead calling Bush's indecisiveness great run D by the Patriots... Lol.

The point they did make that was correct imo... Was showing judt how incompitent our LBs are in coverage.

I just finished rewatched the Jags and Lions games.
Sure, there were a few plays, like the Sharpton's mishap that I mentioned.
It was his first game back.

The other "subpar" plays weren't disastrous when looking at the whole bodywork.

They made a ton of play, too.

I will rewatch the Titans game; but really, do I need to?

IMHO, this is the best our ILBs as a group, has shown.

1st play: Dobbins giving up a reception to Bills' TE Chandler.
2nd play: Sharpton & Ruud vs Lions on crossing patterns looking a little lost.

Mcnabb is cherry picking.

The video doesn't start for me for some reason. Probably some stupid setting in IE I don't have the energy to find right now.

No its NFL.com. For a multi-billion dollar company the NFL has the worst website around.

Ha, I watched the show earlier today and that's exactly what I came here to post. Bush had cutback lanes galore on those excerpted plays, and if Arian Foster gets those same looks I am prettay prettay prettay sure he'd gash that defense cutting it back across to those wide open running lanes.

Could have told you that. Came across it in the listings last night but didn't bother. I knew what they were going to say.

I just finished rewatched the Jags and Lions games.

I was way off on that. Just rewatched it & they showed the Bills game at Reliant & the Lions game. The Lions game was where he showed an endzone view & you can see our LBs didn't know where to go or what to do & they were running into each other.

I don't think you need to watch any more film unless it's for your personal satisfaction. I'm well aware of our LBs weaknesses in pass defense & have said so for years. I call our LBs down hill players, because that is what they are. They attack the L.O.S. They get in the back field & F$$@ Schit up. They play sideline to sideline & it's a difficult task to get past them.

But there is a big hole in the middle of the field if it weren't for Wade's schemes with his Safeties & CBs... and more teams would exploit that if it weren't for Watt & Smith.

Mcnabb is cherry picking.

I'm sure he could have found more. Cushing was our best LB in coverage & he wasn't that good. Definitely not a strength of his game.

Rudd has shown a few flashes.

Watch our competition & see how often they get their hands on the ball in pass defense. Then watch our guys. Unless it's a tipped ball or a poorly thrown ball, our LBs never touch the ball. They barely present an obstacle to opposing QBs.

They all look alike to me.

Come on dawg, when you're mostly in man you don't have as many real chances to get the hand on the ball, especially with a single deep safety.

No, they aren't perfect.
Not even Cushing.

On the part where you said our LBs never touched the ball, I am very happy to disagree :)

So I'm watching Playbook this week. Baldinger talks about the Titans tendency to play man coverage & proceeds to show Jack Locker making excellent throws to beat man coverage. Kenny Brit beats the corner on go routes, Locker places the ball over the top, defender has no chance, Brit runs under it, catches it & keeps running.

Baldinger lays out a good argument, citing that attacking the corners is what other teams found success with against the Colts. The first play shows the Colts in 3 deep coverage, Cj beats the corner assigned to him, gets behind the safety & Stafford delivers a bullet over 50 yards through the air. Then he shows the Brit plays I spoke of earlier, a 20 yard go route that Britt takes for 46 yards down the right sideline & a 40 yard go route to the left sideline.

Baldy asks, "Can you imagine what Andre Johnson is thinking right now?"

My answer is he's probably thinking, "We don't run that play, we don't run that play, maybe that one will work, but we don't run that one either."

I watched playbook last week & again they presented a plausible plan to attack their LBs with our two TE sets. I knew Graham was out, but we still had Casey & it looked like a good plan. But we didn't do it. But the point, is that as I watched that, I was thinking, "Yeah, that "fits" with what we're trying to do. That looks like something we do."

As opposed to watching this weeks plan to attack Indy's corners. I know we aren't going to do that, because we never do that. Matt can't throw a go route to save his life. His tendency to purposely under throw balls don't jive with the go route. Throwing deep on three deep? Nah... even if Andre is fast enough to get behind them.... it ain't gonna happen.

So then I ask myself, why not?

The first section was kinda awkward, McNabb was having issues saying Jj Swatt & while he was talking about what our defense needs to do for us to return to our winning ways, they kept showing clips of how out of sync our offense was. Monday night & a play where Matt missed OD in the end zone vs Tennessee.

The Pats defense played well and they played discipline. They did a good job against our play action pass. Their end men stayed home and didn't give time to set up, or they were able to get penetrating and messed it up through the middle.
In the mean time we bit on too many play fakes and we paid each time.

We took a few shots downfield.
Jean dropped a long one on the right.
He didn't run a good enough route and was called for OPI on the long one down the left end zone.

We got the ball to OD once on a intermediate route.
But overall, their coverage was fairly solid.
They had timely safety help.
Mc Courtyards on the INTERNET and the other safety came up to lay one on Jean on another play.

That doesn't address the question I'm asking.

If we know the weaknesses of the opposing defense, why don't we attack them? Combined, how many targets did OD & Casey have? They should have been featured in the game.

They were weak at the CB position, they played man on Andre Johnson. "Their guy" got hurt & they put a 7th rounder on him, any other team would have "picked on" that guy the minute he entered the game.

We're going to play the Colts, their corners suck. I guarantee we won't attack them. I guarantee you won't see us pressure them with 9s & you won't see a perfectly thrown pass that drops into the receiver's hands as they streak down the field.

For one, when you play a 2TE set, or when you run the play action, often times you need one to block.

Secondly, as I just rewatched the coach film of the first quarter, we had all the looks we wanted. Jean had chances downfield (ie. He was more "open") against a rookie in Dennard or Arrington, who is not known to be able to defend big receivers. You've been to the Pats MB, but I don't know if you catch the part where their fans were worried about how our 3 receivers (AJ, Walter, and Jean) were all 6'3.

Thirdly, they doubled up at times, so our RBs were more open.
We hit them some, Foster dropped at least once, the pressure may have caused Schaub to be slightly high on one, and Schaub thought McCourty was going to come down on Foster when he threw that pick.
We ran mirror routes on one play to clear everything out to both sides with Foster came out late after he picked up the blitz. There wasn'the a defender within 25 yards of him, but our protection broke down.

You cannot just say that you will come out and just attack the TEs.
They game-planned to provide them with help.
We take what the Defense gave us, at least we tried to.
Our execution was poor, that's all.

You don't want your QB to force the ball into double coverage on a TE when somebody else is open, now do you?

BAsically, similar things happened in the second quarter.

When we have a guy open, one of theirs make a play at the line, or we had break down in protection, or a guy drops a pass.

The Pats had all the timely plays they needed when it's most important.

We need Graham and Newton back.
Harris can't be out there full-time; he's just isn't what he used to be, and Gardner is just a bench player.

Ben Jones still plays like a rookie, and he can use some help, too.
I wish Kubiak had played Brooks more. He did a better Job against Big Vince; he could have used a few more snaps, maybe even to spell Wade Smith here and there.

Or we can use a healthy Caldwell, too.
But I don't think he'll be healthy enough at the moment.

I was really worried about OD going into the game. I was shocked they didn't run play action especially on first down with him spilling off the line into the flat.

As far as Dennard, yes he was a 7th round but only because of off the field issues. A week before the draft a lot of people myself included had him going in the second round and a few even saying he could go the end of the first.

He's still a rookie & we're still talking about Andre.
