Trend - giving up big plays on 3rd and long

This defense , prior to the Jaq's game had been shutting offenses down on 3rd and long at a historical pace.

The Jaq's had 5 plays on third and long that accounted for 300+ yards of offense.

Today the Lions converted 3rd and long multiple times. Detriot finished 9-18 on 3rd down overall. 5 of those 9 conversions were on 3rd and 10 or longer according to the play by play on NFL.com.

Thats got to be a concern going forward.

Dude I've been bitching all day that our D is exposed. Spread us out. That simple.
hell i wish kubiak would spread our offense out, i am so sick of always seeing these 2 wide formations and when they do put more out there it is a bunch formation with AJ on one side and KW and 2 TEs bunched with him. Getting sick of the same play calls over and over.

Don't ignore in victory what you wouldn't in defeat.
Aint that the truth .... I really hope they solve this going forward.

They really missed J.Jo today. The defense was a version of the 2010 defense today. But they stopped the Lions in OT when they had too, That and Hanson.

BTW, looks like Reed is going to be out until the playoffs atleast.

Time for the reign of the Mercilus.

You know what? Yeah they got exposed. No J-Jo, No Cody, No Dobbins, 4 days with no practice. Couple that with the fact Detroit had a home game last week and the Texans traveled, and still found a way to win. I remember Schaub saying a while back that if the offense started slow then the Defense would pick it up. I personally think the offense became too reliant on the D at times, and is a huge wake up call to start off faster so the D won't have to save them everytime. Rest, practice, getting J-Jo back on D will help, as well as Tate on offense to help control the time of possession.

I think this bad patch for the D is very much what I think Corrosion called the Cushing effect multiplied. Wade very much schemes around individual players. It isn't just bringing a new guy in and saying do the same thing. They are having to adapt on the fly like changing out Ball for KJ on CJ, having to figure out what Dobbins did well, then what Sharpton did well, Mitchell in for Cody, etc. and adapting the scheme. Hopefully we get some of the starters back soon.

I think we are missing Cush. His replacements have played well but his skill set is unmatched in our LB core.

Then whats the excuse for the Jaq's game - 5 plays totalling 300+ yards on 3rd downs.

They are kinda beat up and that didnt get any better today with Reed .... anything said about his injury ?? Im sure its a groin pull .... but how severe and whats the timetable for his return ?

Blackmon was a top 10 pick for a reason. Gabbert is the worst QB in the NFL not named Mark Sanchez. Henne is decent and with a weapon like Blackmon can be dangerous. Gameplanning for Blackmon/Henne and Blackmon/Gabbert are completely different.

Just like you said in the other thread. Can't expect the secondary to hold up for 8 seconds.

We need another pass rusher, a stud.

Bum Phillips made a good comment on 610 today. He said that we were missing our top defenders from 3 different positions. We played without JJo our top corner, without Cody our best nose tackle, and Cushing our top line backer. That undoubtedly has an effect on the defense and it's tough to overcome those kinds of loses. The important thing is Wade adjusting his scheme accordingly. I didn't like that we were man to man all game long. We have to be more innovative going forward.

I don't know.

Dobbins did a very good job for a while. & Sharpton looked good when he stepped in against the Jags. & even Rudd looked good when he came in for James. Heck, James had been playing better than he was at the beginning of the season.

I think it's a little bit of what 'cak said, Wade trying to scheme different players in. But these guys learning who's who on the field, how they fit together, when they need help, when they don't.

I think they'll get it together before long.

Losing Cushing and all of the others is what is causing the major dropoff. IMHO They are missing a key piece at every level of the defense. DL, Cody, a punctured lung is nothing to mess around with. I mean the man was in intensive care for a reason. I could see him missing 3-4 more games.

Cush= gone, Reed appeared to have a bad groin pull. If that's the case he will be lucky to be back for the playoffs. Barwin=healthy, but sill AWOL.

J.Jo, hopefully the time off will let his minor groin problem heal properly.

Agree with this.

Watt is a beast but someone else is needed to make qb's feel more uncomfortable.

I honestly think where Cushing is missed most is with the threat that he could blitz in the a gap...

Just like the difference between Watt & Smith. Watt is going to finish. he's going to get the sack or a nasty hit on the QB without picking up a 15 yarder.

We don't have another LB, inside, outside, don't matter, that can finish. Not James, not Dobbins, not Sharpton, not Barwin, not Reed can get to the QB & make him shake in his boots. Cleats.

Cushing is a different story. You see him coming up the middle, you better start thinking fast.

Without Cushing, we've got to send Manning or McCain, someone who can run these athletic mofos down.

This may sound dumb but on 3rd downs, I've noticed that our guys seem to lose their footing a lot. I mean yesterday I must have seen at least 5 slips on 3rd downs and big plays. What is that just luck or sudden lack of balance, unseen routes, bad cleat choice, or what? I am going to rewatch game today.

You can't have as many injuries on your defense as we've had and it not affect the team. The important thing is, we're winning through it. We've got two road games ahead of us. But you know what? We are the ONLY team in the NFL right now that's perfect on the road this season.

I never expected the Texans to go 15-1 in the regular season and still don't despite the wonderfull efforts of the team. I'd have to find it, but I think I predicted a 10 or 11 win season before the season started. I think now 13-3 is now possible even with a beat up defense. We've got Tennessee, New England and Indy on the road, and Indy and Minn at home to complete the season.

Out of those five games I can see us winning three and losing two. If the defense can all of a sudden get healthy again, even minus Cushing it's possible there is only one loss in there.

One things for sure, Wade has got his work cut out for him. But as long as the offense can stay healthy, we've got an excellent chance.
