Interesting to see Bob on yahoo finance and great advice from Bob's dad

Robert McNair is a self-made billionaire. But he doesn't take his wealth for granted. In fact, you can say he lives by the motto, "there's no 'I' in "TEAM" — both on and off the field.

McNair is the founder, chairman and CEO of the Houston Texans. The National Football League awarded its 32nd franchise to McNair and the city of Houston ( after the Oilers packed up, moved to Tennessee and became the Titans ). The Texans made their debut in 2002. McNair created the nation's largest privately held power company, Cogen Technologies, and sold it to Enron for $1.5 billion in 1999. He declined an offer to become Enron CEO (two years later the company went bankrupt).

When it comes to football, McNair takes an active role with the team, often checking on the players before each game. He enjoys the camaraderie that comes from "everyone working for the same goal: in the trenches, dodging the bullets, taking the criticism, enjoying the wins and suffering through the losses together."

Besides football, Bob McNair in involved with many other businesses like his biotech investment firm Cogene Biotech Ventures, the financial and real estate firm The McNair Group, as well as Palmetto Partners, the private investment company that manages the McNair's public and private equity investments. He and his wife Janice are dedicated to philanthropic causes like the Robert and Janice McNair Foundation, whose mission is to help find cures for breast and pancreatic cancer, diabetes and neurological problems.

So where does McNair's drive comes from? He cites an old saying, "On the desert of despair lies the bones of those who, on the verge of victory, sat down to rest then died." However, this drive is not what gets McNair up in the morning; his dog does (at 5:00 a.m.).

Other interests are golf and wine — both French and California varieties. McNair says he drinks "more of it than I should, but I live to enjoy it the next day." When asked about the greatest piece of advice he'd ever gotten, he smiles. "My dad told me you can't go wrong by doing what's right and I have lived by that. I think it's very good advice for anyone."

And bringing everything full circle back to his embrace of "team," McNair channels his inner "Hannibal" Smith —played by the late George Peppard - from the 1980s action series, "The A-Team". He loves it when a plan comes together. "I get satisfaction out of seeing a plan well executed and the success that comes from that good execution."

This is McNair's playbook both on and off the field.

..

Great guy. I remember thinking "Are you carzy for turning down position with ENRON?" Yeah, crazy like a fox. I now wonder what he knew or suspected.

Compared to that last dispicable NFL owner we had, this one is a saint and a breath of fresh air. I'm happy with our owner.

Blasphemy I say! McNair's cheap, his hot dogs and beer are robbery and he won't spend the money to fill a decent roster.

Uh, wait a minute. I think I just had a Second Honeymoon flashback. :kitten:

Now back to your regular scheduled programming. :)

LOL. I think the "Cheap" label is dead and gone forever. He keeps spending up to the salary cap every year so there's not much else you can ask for.

Well, maybe better hot dogs I suppose. :clown:

I think they sell Earl Campbell (or was that Bum Phillips) links in Reliant... is there some problem with that?

Bum hawks Blue Ribbon products at his smokehouse. I don't really peruse the beaneries so I can't comment to whether Earl's hot links are represented or not. Would not be surprised at all if they were though. They're pretty damn good. I like 'em anyway.

the hot dog thing was a joke. I actually have no idea what kind of hot dogs they serve at Reliant.

Oh I knew that. I was just playing straight man.

All this talking about links is making me hungry.

Me either...my attempt at a joke didn't come across that way! That being said...I'm sure the hot dogs are better outside! :)

As a guy who's spent some time working in the financial field, I can't help but have respect for a man who's accomplished so much on his own. His journey truly is magnificent, and one we can all look up to.

Word on the street is that Bob And Janice McNair are very, very generous people with their money. They give to a ton of charities and causes. They're good people.

As for the team, I never thought he was cheap about spending for the Texans. If his head coach said that every player needed gold-plated Mercedes' to drive to games, Bob McNair wouldn't hesitate. That's just how he is. He trusts his employees to do their jobs, and will give them what they need to do so.

I know a lot of fans were devastated when the Oilers left, but, in the bigger scheme of things, Houston ended up better off.

And I think that's an understatement. Houston wound up with a man who is perhaps THE classiest owner in the NFL. It's really kind of a miracle.

Day-um! Bob's gettin' a lotta love in this thread! But, hey, you reap what you sow. :koolaid:

I've only seen the Aramark issued trichinosis dog. I try to steer clear of the food at Reliant, eating prior to the game. If absolutely necessary, I'll eat a Papa John's cheese pizza or a pretzel. Haven't gotten ill from those...yet.

I avoid the food entirely. Not going to pay eight bucks for a .25 cent dog. Have to every once in awhile for the kids but yuck. Even the pretzels are slag. What do they do, cook those things a few weeks in advance and then let them dry out before serving them? You can't get enough mustard on them to make them moist.
