Tests Monday confirmed what the Texans already suspected - right tackle Todd Wade will miss the rest of the season after spraining his medial collateral ligament during Sunday's game against Indianapolis.

Wade is expected to undergo surgery later this week, and recovery will take four to six months

More changes for O-line
Because of the injury to right tackle Todd Wade, the Texans will be making more changes in the offensive line for the Kansas City game.

If guard Zach Wiegert returns to play the right side, Victor Riley can play right tackle, his natural position. If Wiegert can't play, Riley may play right guard for the second game in a row. In that case, Seth Wand could start at right tackle.

"Injuries are part of the game, but it's hard to develop the continuity and consistency you want when you're forced to move players around," coach Dom Capers said. "Fortunately, we've had a lot of young guys gain some valuable experience, and that's paying off right now when they're being forced to play."

And it looks like some combination of Weigert-Riley-Wand will be playing the right side. (From same Chronicle article.) I hope they bench Riley. And I am going to use this stat, which can be argued. Riley did not start in the win against Cleveland or the near-win against Jacksonville. Now, I know that we are much more than one lineman, but to me this stat is indicative of the types of problems this player has brought. His fatigue has been a factor in the second half, especially the fourth quarter, and against KC, we need that patched. I vote Weigert-Wand on the right side.
 
I don't mind Riley at RG. That's where he should have been playing all along because he is a slower, stronger OL and not fit for OT. If Weigert comes back and is 100%, I would still rather see him out there than Riley.

The way I am hearing it, Riley would take Wade's spot, and that's the part I don't like. Put Wand in at RT and leave Riley on the bench.

They may have re-done his contract and inserted a cheeseburger clause. He may play better since that is where it looks like his money is going to.

Yeah, that's what I heard on the radio today too. I haven't been very impressed with Wand this year although he hasn't gotten much of a chance so let Riley and Wand split time at RT in practice this week and see who looks better, and if Weigert isn't ready to come back this week leave Riley at RG for another week.
 
I can tell you this: Riley will play at RT cause Pendry, offensive genius that he is, won't put Wand in. Pendry doesn't like him and is doing anything he can to not play him.
 
Pendry does not like Wand, hasn't like him since last year, hasn't work with him in the off-season; at camp; or since practised started. Professional or not, if you're not coached, you don't play as well as your ability. I say give Wand a chance before he leaves and goes to another team and becomes one of those former players who does a great job on a new team.

Yes, I think Pendry is the biggest coaching problem and perhaps the fly in the ointment. He may be the source of 90% of the coaching problems on this ball club. That's hard to do, but I think that might even be an under statement.
 
Actually, I have been saying for sometime that I would like to see Wiegert and Wand side by side. However, I wanted to see them together on the left side giving Carr protection. I have felt that Wiegert and Wand would work very well together. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
 
Wand needs to play RT in Wades absence. As TexansFanInCC pointed out the shoes aren't going to be too tough to fill to begin with and Wand was a "serviceable" LT for us last season who did not embarrass himself in his first year as a starter. Yes he had tons of room for improvement as a LT.

Starting at RT should be well within his abilities.
 
not sure if it's really pendry not liking wand...i think it's more of wand not progressing like he was supposed to in the offseason...i mean that's kind of what you get for picking a small school OT in the third round though...i still think it was too much of a reach there but oh well...wand is probably going to have to be a RT in the nfl...the only problem with pitts doing so well at LT and the fact that we will be picking a LT in the draft this year where do you play everybody...and who does play...a lot of people have said they would like to see pitts at RT...i would like to see that but i would also like to see wade earn the $10 million contract we gave him
 
This is not the first time that I have heard somebody say that Wand did not progress as well as he should have during the off-season, but I have never heard anything more in-depth about what he isn't doing - what he does to make Pendry think he has not progressed. Slow feet? Too little baby fat? (Sorry for sarcasm - he looks like he's dropped some fat from his rookie pic.) If anyone can point me to that information, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Overrated? Who rates him highly? Nonetheless, he IS a good run blocker, even if he does have issues with pass protection. He'll be missed for that, if nothing else. Also, I do believe he's a better pass protector than Riley.
 
One thing that's become unmistakable in any story involving the Texans this season is the steady and steadily increasing use of the injuy excuse by coaches, players, and Casserly. By the time we reach our last game this will be sounding like a promising season that was lost to the many injuries we suffered instead of the bumbling mess of a season that it was.

The Texans took half the season to "rise up" to the level of being "at least not a blow-out". They were easily the poorest prepared team in the NFL for the first 5 weeks. If this goes down as an injury plagued year like 2003 and Capers manages to hold on to his job I'm going to be sick with disgust.

As for Wade I want him to work out and I've seen him play two years for Pendry so I know what Joe Pendry can get out of Todd Wade. That amounts to "a whole hell of a lot less than the offensive line coach in Miami".

I don't have a lot of faith that Casserly has been the talent guy he was advertised to be but before I write him off I want to see these players work under a different staff.
 
Everybody here already knows I'd pick Wand to start at RT. One reason is he may have a future - Riley is about done in this league.

Normally I try to post good things about players I like and try to let it slide or make general comments about players I'm not too high on. I might bash a unit but I really don't like to single out a player. At times I'm successful at this at other times I'm not. However......

The second thing is Riley has been given a very liberal weight goal for the season, and I think he has spent much of the year getting fined for not making weight. It looks (from a conditioning standpoint) like he is about the least hard working Texan there has been on this team. In reward for the this lack of effort, he gets gifts of playing time and starting positions. In the end, he doesn't even perform well on the field. What message does this send to the players who are busting their rears trying to get a chance to see the field?
