Carr's dad no longer welcome at practice..

How is the absence of one guy going to help a team who has to face 50,000 plus on Sundays.

Dom is out of line, he should give the reporters the boot, they are the reason we hear all of these stories and they write the articles saying we suck.

I think Dom should have spent all the effort he put into thinking of this master plan to make us better and should have been coaching the guys up.

I think Dom wasn't paying attention and missed riley sneeking his way into the first team huddle.

so how many other players need DADDY to come hold thier hands and kiss their boo-boo's at practice?

I'm personally glad this happened. When Carr starts acting like a team player with all the rules applying to him as the rest of the team, perhaps he will learn how to actually BE a team player, with all the same rules applying to HIM.

Yeah, it's pretty pathetic.

perhaps you failed to read the article with open eyes and not 'golden boy Carr colored lenses' yourself NFLforher.

Was this an admission that David had been coddled?

"That has nothing to do with it," Capers said. "If you have a rule, it's the rule.

"I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to see him out there," David Carr said. "That's one of the reasons he retired and moved out here. I also understand what Dom did. He wants to bring our team closer together. That's the most important thing right now."

like I said before, when the rules apply equally to ALL the Texans players INCLUDING GOLDEN BOY CARR then they might, perhaps, maybe, start actually playing like a TEAM.

I will admit I did find this little snippet quite funny

Capers didn't throw out reporters for obvious reasons. He didn't have the nerve to tell the Chronicle's John McClain and Channel 11's Gifford Nielsen to leave.
knowing what I know about how the Texans handle 'media relations' I think it is quite hilarious that Justice thinks that John 'the General' McLame prints or says ANYTHING that isn't cleared by the Texans front office directly FIRST is almost too funny.

Gee Gr8, tell us how your really feel. That's a little too personal towards Carr to be feeling ill will against him or his family.

Gee Gr8, tell us how your really feel. That's a little too personal towards Carr to be feeling ill will against him or his family
whats too personal?

honestly I don't get all you Carr lovers at all. You people start a topic titled David Carrs DAD isn't allowed at practice anymore, and then you don't want to actually talk about THAT. I replied in the context of the thread title. If its too personal don't start a thread on David Carr's personal relationship with his Daddy. I didn't start the thread, I simply replied to it.

not to detract from the actual TOPIC of the thread, but care to explain HOW I made this too personal, honestly I am very interested in where I crossed the line at, according to you Ses.

Well, we really do not know if it is a distaction or not. Does not seem to be, but, what if everyone wanted a family member to attend a practice? Then, i think it would really be a problem. I really think that as a policy, practice should be off limits. Does anyone know how the other players feel? I have two kids playing football, but, i don't see all parents at every practice including myself. This is a little odd, but who are we to judge. That being said, i'm glad we have a good family man as our qb, opposed to someone getting into trouble all of the time. Let's not make this an issue.

I guess a good question would be "what other players have family members attend?"

Some of my family is still in France and I still think they're too close...

I don't really think David needs his father at practice.

As part of my ongoing effort to promote a UNITED TEXANS FANATICS* gathering next Sunday night against the Chiefs, I must refrain from any comments concerning desperate acts of a coaching staff that has lost control and respect of a losing team.

Don't know of many professional, if any at all, players' whose dads are out there at practice w/ them. I didn't know they could do that. Ah well. This is work, DC.

why is this a story?
Because many feel that Carr has been coddled and treated differently than the others. Hard to deny his play has improved since they made the switch...did it have something to do with it? who knows?

apparently the offensive line felt like it needed to protect him now that his daddy got kicked out though and isn't there for him. Coincidence? I'm kidding...I think.

What I don't get is why this year. If he's been there through the first three losing seasons, why now?

I have a really hard time believing that professional football players are being coddled by an organization (except TO), or being treated differently because a PARENT is there. Give me a break. An agent maybe, but not a parent.

This is just the talk of a losing team, where every little thing is amplified to cover up the fact that the team just plain sucks.

1-8 says it all. Carr's dad has nothing to do with that.

When Pendry took over Carr started watching film with the rest of the offense as well. That just reeks of coddling. Also, Carr didn't look like he had a clue his first few games and quite frankly was just awful. They made several changes and this was just one of many things from what I understand....and it's just hard to argue that his play hasn't improved. David can take the changes…his cap hit is nearly twice the size of the next highest paid Texan. He gets plenty of money to put up with his Dad not being in the sidelines. Can you see Biggio or Bagwells Dad at the Astros practice?

Carr, David $7,810,326
Walker, Gary $4,039,493
McKinney, Steve $3,956,160
Robinson, Dunta $3,483,881
Wong, Kailee $3,421,160
Wiegrert, Zach $3,356,160
Wade, Todd $3,137,827
Johnson, Travis $2,999,000
Johnson, Andre $2,938,104

The best player out of all those is at the bottom of that list..Andre.

Rich Lord was insisting again today David will get his bonus. I'm presuming he knows what he's talking about.

If he does and he continues to play poorly things will really get ugly in Texan land.

Rodger Carr had attended almost every practice for four seasons, but when the Texans were 0-5, Dom Capers got tough. He closed practice to sponsors, employees, visitors ... and Rodger Carr.

Only reporters are allowed to watch practice these days. Other coaches have done similar things over the years, but they typically begin by throwing out the media.

it wasn't like all the Carr lovers purport and Capers came and told Rodger Carr he can no longer come to the practices. He made a hard and fast setting rule and Rodger Carr fell on the 'outside of the gates' part of the rule. The media just likes to take the most assinin slant they can figure out to it and talk about it like Capers did this INTENTIONALLY to ban Rodger Carr. Heck later in the article Capers admits to having one of his own friends invited and had to change that invitation due to the new rule he himself made.

Carr's playing has improved slightly recently. Why? Well maybe it was the sideline distractions, maybe not. But the rules are there for EVERYONE, including Carr's DADDY. And that is the way it should be, IMHO.

WWJD said:

Andre's hit will be about the same as Carr's next year. Carr will have about 15 million in cap hit the next two seasons if we pick up his deal as is.

When Pendry took over Carr started watching film with the rest of the offense as well.

I'd never heard that before. I agree, that's a little weird. But did his dad have anything to do with that? Why didn't the coaches just tell him three years ago to watch film with his team? How do we know that's not a Palmer thing leftover?

I think a lot of this is speculation, and really on the gossip side of things. Sure, I understand the rule of banning his dad and all, but it is nothing but wild eyed theories beyond that.

Besides, they won 7 games last season with his dad there, and they've won 1 this year. I don't think it's working. idonno:

They can change little things all they want to, but the reality is nothing but a BIG change at the top is going to make a difference, IMO.

I don't think it was Carr that watched the film in one room and the rest of the offense in another. I think it was more like the offensive line in one group and the "skill" positions together in another. I could be wrong about that; I've never asked anybody about it specifically.

It is still pretty weird though. I can see some film study by unit, but you'd think they'd also get together as an offense and coordinate.

Where did you hear that? The way I remember the radio reports, the O as a whole starting watching film together instead of in units--don't recall them specifying what the units were much less saying Carr had separate film sessions from the team or other QB's.

....and it's just hard to argue that his play hasn't improved.

Well it certainly improved from the 1st few games of this season, but IMO it isn't anything close to the first half of last season. Don't know where that leaves the core problem, Palmer, Pendry, Capers, Carr, OL, etc. but he is looking better than his miserable start this year.

Can you see Biggio or Bagwells Dad at the Astros practice?

Not saying you made a big deal of this, but just surprised this has become such a big deal period. Fact is there are lots of friends and family members that get invited around the various leagues to practices--we just don't hear about it 99% of the time. Carr's dad took advantage of the privilege more than most, but so what if according to the staff, if anything he agreed with them. On the flip side, as gr8 effectively said, no reason to read anything into this about Carr since the rule was for everyone--it's not like DD's dad is welcome but they kicked out Carr's dad. Wow, people are stretching for things nowadays.

Well i have been hearing about David's Dad pampering him at every practice for years now. i recall about 2 or 3 months back on sports radio 610 they were saying how the coaching staff had told all the team about not having family members going to practice and david's dad kept going you would think David would step up and tell his dad he doesnt need him to bring his lunch everyday.

Maybe the old man sells food from a roach coach and players just buy food and snacks during practice. maybe thats the reason these guys are soooo slow:brickwall

Well seems you heard something along those lines too since you brought up knowledge of the team watching film in their position groups. I don't mean to be argumentative but Carr is the only starter in his position group, so that had him watching film alone, away from the other starters on offense. I'm certainly not blaming Carr for that.

I mentioned the whole change from the Palmer coddling style to the Pendry changes as noticing Carr playing better. The first half of last season we beat up on some pretty bad defenses too (Vikings defense was the only team Carr has ever tossed 3TD's against)...but yeah, better - but not better than a specific couple of games out of his 50 something career starts.

The bottom line on how I see it is that I don't really care if his Pops is at the practice but I sure do want to see him treated like everyone else and not given special privileges. That is one quick way to lose the guys you are trying to lead and how to garner resentment from the others.

Man this thread is full of half truths, stretches, wierd angles, you name it. Big deal his dad was asked not come to the practices anymore. Some of you are acting like Carr is not a team player. Does anyone remember Carr inviting down AJ in the offseason to work together? A 1-8 season is almost like a hallucinagen to some people around here.

I certainly agree with the special treatment statement, but from what I have heard this wasn't a Carr rule, it was just that Carr's dad used it more than others.

On the film review, I never heard it broken down past "units" whether that be all the QB's or QB's and WR's, whatever, and the grouping was done by the coach (Palmer?) not the players--that's why I was asking if you had heard anything specific about solo film review or an actual request by Carr that this was his idea rather than Palmer's. Carr shouldn't get coddled and if they have in terms of special treatment they have been wrong, but I don't want to see revisionist crud like Napa's post above which speaks for itself in the credibility department.

I'm with you on that and I think that most of these issues are coaching/management issues and not David Carr issues. I do think that if he is handled more intelligently he will probably continue to play better. We do need to see him with a new staff and I think that would only be fair to him as well.

:tomato: Carr's dad is inspired by Donavon Mcnabb's Mom on the soup commercial ... and he thinks he can land a deal with Chef Boyardee .
Carr should have been a womens tennis player . Roger would fit right in there .
All this leads to bad chemistry which you clearly see on the field ... now throw in running out of bounds and losing 5 yards . Ah shucks now my team has lost respect for what should be their leader . That probably has something to do with the sack total . Thats why I'd like to see Ragone play . I want to see if the team rally's around him looking for a leader .

Coddled, protected, prima donna golden boy.....if accurate, then there's undoubtedly much resentment among teammates. That's the kind of stuff fans rarely see evidence of - except for the occaisonal sideline argument with a teammate, or the occaisional murmur from a beat writer or a talking head on the radio, or the occaisional on-field tantrum, - but that can be the most destructive to the "team" fabric.

It's time to grow up. There's an offense waiting for someone to lead it - inside the locker room and meeting rooms - not just in media sound bites or newspaper quotes.

#8 has shown that he can do the job - at times - and he'll have a new O system next season and a three year extension, making him among the elite paid QBs in the league even though he has been anything but. Hopefully there will also be a new o-lineman or two in the mix next year to help the cause, but astute followers of the team can see that the o-line isn't the only problem.

Do u really think there is a seperate film room for Carr only and that only he and his dad could get in there? Seriously, did the other quarterbacks on the team have to stand outside the door instead of studying the film and learning? Get a grip people! His dad was at practice, big deal! I don't think Capers or Palmer said "i'm not gonna yell at David because his dad is here and i don't want his dad's feelings hurt!"

This rivals that trade DD thread a few weeks ago as the dumbest on here. It's not like Carr's dad was the only one allowed in practice before Capers made that rule, he was probably the only one that lives in the area and he liked to come out and watch practices and see how the team was playing. It's not like he was out there "coddling" David as some of you have put it and it's not like he was sitting around the stadium all day with David. Capers instituted this no-family or guests rule and made it apply to Carr as well. How is that coddling him or treating him different from everyone else? This was a ridiculous article posted in the newspaper in the first place and a bunch of people who don't know anything about the situation responding to it and trying to use it to further their views on why the team isn't playing well.

In a game thats as tough as proffesional football ... you don't think having whats supposed to be your star acting like its Mayberry is gonna hurt .

Name another player who's Dad retired and started going to practices . Archie Manning did'nt do it and he was a pro QB . We might as well give out juice boxes and cookies after games . I can see Bum getting hammered with Pastorini's Dad after beating San Diego .

People keep talking about Carr's first few games last year. He definitely passed well but it was against the Who's Who of Worst Pass Defenses. Go back and look. Here were our first 6 opponents in 2004 and their ranking in pass defense:

San Diego 31
Detroit 20
Kansas City 32
Oakland 30
Minnesota 29
Tennessee 26

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/stati...ort=yds&pos=def&league=nfl&season=2&year=2004

I'll give Carr credit for taking advantage of the situation. He was definitely playing better than at any other point in his pro career, but lets keep it in perspective. Heck AJ Feeley might even look good after 6 games against those opponents.

Yes I agree, this is just a really dumb topic to argue or debate. If I could have my dad watch me play a game, and yes folks it is still just a game, then I'd love to have him out every chance I got.

Any knowledgable fan can see it's not all on Carr, it's everyone.

maybe Carr could bring an entourage like some basketball players do, but its his dad...I personally could care less if he is there but get real people, like i said in a previous post I don't think the coaches were being easy on David because his dad was there

:texflag: I agree its not just Carr . The coaches and gm are the bottom line on anything that went wrong . The gm trumps the coach . I would clean house and evaluate my talent pronto .
Its amazing how we took a wrong turn so quickly ... but there were omens . This team now has an LA Clipper attitude and how do you rinse that off .

I'm just amazed at how ugly a losing season can make people.

By some of the logic in this thread, the team needs to ban wives, children, and relatives to games, too. Afterall, they could be a big distraction to the players when it really matters! :ok:

The fact of the matter is that Coach Capers is a losing coach, as clearly evident by his record.

FACT: Capers has had ONE winning season his entire head coaching career.

FACT: Capers has had SEVEN losing seasons his entire head coaching career.

Pathetic stories and crazy speculation like this are par for the course for a losing franchise. This attitude is slowing choking the team and infecting the fans like a cancer. And it all starts with the top.

Yes this just reeks of desperation on the part of the coaching staff. They are reaching at straws to find a solution.

You have to give Dom credit for taking on 2 expantion teams. That is a lot harder then taking a job with an established team(Switzer).

Alright, I'll give him credit. :ok:

But, in return, do you ever wonder why established NFL teams never handed the HC reigns over to him? :hmmm:

He's a fine man and a great defensive coordinator. But these things do not necessarily equal a good head coach.

I am aware of the opponents on the 1st half of the schedule last year, but it isn't just a stats thing--although if you want a more complete picture on your stats you might include that the Texans put up more yards than the teams average passing yards given up on 6 of the 1st 9 games. In any event, Carr's intangibles looked better. He was acting confident and making things happen. He was throwing accurately into tight coverage including double coverage--and the WR's were catching the ball. He looked much more comfortable. Do you think he is playing better this year?

I have been reading this thread and as hard as it has been for me NOT to respond, the FEMALE instinct took over and got the best of me!:) I just have ONE little bitty thing to say.

I bet Roger Carr is Davids biggest critic! He probably makes all you couch coaches look pretty lame!! Boys grow up having their Dad's yell at them for something or another when it comes to sports. Davids a grown boy now and plays in the big leagues, but, I bet it doesn't stop Roger Carr from giving him a piece of his mind when he messes up.

I ask my grandson not to long ago if it bothered him for his Dad to "sideline" coach him, because it about drove me nuts. He told me NO, that it made him work harder. Repect is a very powerful word and speaks volumns!! JMO!!

if i made enough playing a sport for my DADDY to retire and he was allowed at the practices, he wouldnt miss a single one. these players are grown, it's not like roger's throwing a fit on the sideline screaming that they put his kid in the game. carr's being coddled because he's there? i see it ... as soon as anyone gets in his face he just shouts out "my dad can beat up your dad" and he gets his way. this is silly. i guess i can understand it though because everyone but the media has been barred from the sidelines ... and we know the media isnt a distraction  .

As a former coach, collegiate, this is excatly why we would not have the parents around when it deals with the field of play.

I guarantee you Roger wasn't yelling criticism at Carr during practice, but I'm sure the two of them talked about his play and the play of the team after practices.

I bet there wouldn't be an issue if Carr's Dad was like Tim McGraw on Friday Night Lights.

We should hire him to be a coach, What do ya think?:)
