Texans sign Terrel McClain

Bleed_Blu_Red

They worked him out last week on Tuesday along with Malcolm Sheppard.

Texans sign McClain and put Keith Browner/Nick Mondek on the PS.

Sharpton is very close to getting on the field but is not ready to play. Tate still out with a hamstring issue.

McClain is 6'2, 297 and is pretty explosive. A 3rd round pick out of South Florida, drafted by the Carolina Panthers. Not sure why he was cut.

We will see what he gives us.

Terrell McClain - DL - Texans

Texans signed DT Terrell McClain.

DE David Hunter (foot) was sent to injured reserve in a corresponding move. The No. 65 pick of the 2011 draft, McClain was waived by the Panthers at final cuts before spending one week on the Patriots' active roster. Abysmal against the run to this point in his young career, McClain might not get many snaps to prove himself in Houston.

I'll enjoy seeing him on the bench for the next few weeks. I'm sure he will bring a good presence to the water cooler.

Obviously with Wade Phillips, McClain who has been playing out of position with Panthers, gets his chance to flash as nose tackle in Texan rotation. Good catch to replace Hunter, will have to give 100% effort & buy into coaching/change of scenery but like his chances to address depth issue on interior DL. :)

Ok I looked up some stuff on him and maybe could be a good guy to sign and see what happens. McClain was an early 3rd round pick (65 overall) in 2011 for the Carolina Panthers. Their defense was really bad last year, 25th overall against the run, and for whatever reason they cut this guy in his second year. He was on IR towards the end of the season with a knee injury. The Patriots had him for only 1 week this year, so he might not be in football shape just yet.

Some more info on him getting cut:

The Carolina Panthers roster had contained few surprises before Sunday morning. Then they cut Terrell McClain.

The second-year defensive tackle was waived by the Panthers after paring the roster down to 53 men to make room for veteran defensive tackle Dwan Edwards.

“Terrell played well in spots for us last year,” general manager Marty Hurney said. “Every year you have to do the best you can evaluating players through training camp and through preseason games. That’s why we do it. It was just the lack of consistency, plus the fact that we had the opportunity to get a player like Dwan Edwards.”

McClain played and started in 12 games for the Panthers last year. As a rookie, the former third-round pick had 19 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery before going on the injured reserve list with a sprained left knee.

The 6-foot- 3, 300-pound Edwards was released by Buffalo on Friday after spending two years with the Bills. A second-round pick in 2004, Edwards has played in 83 games and has 149 tackles and 51/2 sacks.

“We were looking for a guy who would push for us and give us more of that vertical push,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “Terrell’s a different style player as to what we found in Dwan.”

I would also like to point out that one of our posters Beerlover liked him very much as a 4th round prospect going into the 2011 draft. If McClain was cut for "style" reasons as the article above suggests, maybe he will actually help this team at NT. He is only 24 years old, so he certainly hasn't developed completely and there may be more upside to him.

4th. Terrell McClain, DT/NG, South Florida, 6020 297 32 3/4 arms 10 1/8" hands

See him as a fine developmental NG/NT has really good feet in traffic, pairs up well w/Earl Mitchell who I projected Texans would take in 5th rd. last year but took in 3rd. McClain is tall enough with very good bulk. Possesses a quick first step and the lateral agility to stunt and slant effectively. Uses quick active hands to shed and gain penetration. Has the range to make plays outside the tackle box. Tough kid with a relentless motor that fights through double teams.

4th (Texans #8th pick of rd.) Terrell McClain, DT/NT, South Florida, 6030 310 5.14 Impressed @ Shriner game (Wade Phillips coaching) late invite to Senior Bowl. Stock rising because of compact & stout lower torso would be nice DT to develop @ nose, very similar to Ratliff who was drafted by Cowboys in latter rounds but proved to be a steal because of work ethic & fit into Wade system.

Agree BL, may not get much time on field but at Nose could work into a good player by next season. Doesn't cost much to give him a look. Not sure if he wants to take beating a Nose goes thru but to play with our line and on a SB candidate team, he should leap for joy (and maybe knock down a pass or two).

#Texans cut practice squad LB Cameron Collins & DT Lamar Divens to make room for T Nick Mondek & DE Keith Browner

The #Texans re-signed DE Keith Browner & T Nick Mondek (2012 6th-round pick, Purdue) to their practice squad

The #Texans signed DL Terrell McClain, a 2011 3rd-round pick (Panthers) from USF. DE David Hunter (toe) placed on IR

Neither did the other #90.

Yeah, I was thinking Loiseau might surprise.

WOW, that is so cool, thanks for posting :wesmantexanfan:. Especially since I stand by those comments/projection. Often times when doing player evaluations a team will grade him out higher because of need, too bad Carolina didn't switch to 3-4. I know Earl personally so he will defiantly be his back-up, hopefully his work ethic will rub off on McClain who doesn't have the speed to play 4-3 under tackle in NFL which Earl could. He is more of a run plugger who with proper strength training can push the pocket & get bigger (little undersized). He is going to need a few weeks to adjust to his new role/team so don't expect anything but he is excellent insurance, just in case or can help make push into playoffs.
