Would Phillips leave after a Super Bowl?

Health and commitment kept Wade a Texan this season. If we win Super Bowl, would he still have same commitment? He still yearns to be a head coach imo. There should be teams willing to give a defensive guru with Texans stats and a ring a chance to be head coach.

I hope McNair has a huge bonus plan to keep him in Houston. Wade is under contract thru 2013 but can leave for H.C. position. If he goes, I am not sure if we have his replacement in house.

he may leave with or without winning a SB. Enjoy him while you have him because the only thing that moves more than the players are the coaches. Hopefully he retires here but somehow I don't think that is going to happen.

Doesn't even have to win a SB. This defense just has to keep putting up good numbers and I'm afraid he's going to have a lot of opportunities to go be an HC.

And this is my biggest fear. We saw how the defense suffered when Wade was out at the end of last season. It's not just the defense and the players that make it work, it's his play-calling. We need that.

I hope, for my own sake, that he stays and decides that it's a lot more fun being a DC and stomping people's lights out than having to be an HC and deal with all the crap that falls in the HC's lap.

But I doubt that will happen. I can't see how he won't be an HC somewhere next year and I don't know if we can replace him.

Hope he stays, but at least with his arrival Bob see's what a top tier DC can do versus a 2A High School DL coach that has connections. So hopefully he will seek top talent moving forward.

Wade Twittered the other day he was spending the byw week in Dallas and that him and his wife were in process of building a home in Houston. Im thinking he is done moving around.

He IS the highest paid DC in the league at 2.5 million per year soo.....

Phillips @ sonofbum

I am in Dallas for the open date-We
finalized plans for building a home in
Houston #Houstonishome

Looks to me like he has plans to stay.

Even if the Texans dont win a SB and Wade gets a HC gig, he's gone, as it should be.

I hope that is code for "I'm staying in Houtson"

I don't want him to leave. I will say, building a house anywhere, means you have long term plans.

Why does this keep getting brought up? Do you people have nothing better to do with your time other than starting threads on stupid imaginary thoughts?

He is TOO OLD to be hired as a head coach again. He failed as HC and his health is not great. He isn't going anywhere unless he retires. He will be our Dick LeBeau

These statements dance around the key point. Whether he retires or moves on to one more shot as a head coach, the bottom line is one day - hopefully in the far future - we'll lose him.

The key point IMHO is:

Are we grooming his successor? If so, then who is he?

My bet would be Vance Joseph if he doesn't get taken away at some point.

Wade is clearly an ambitious individual. I remember quotes from him during the offseason about his record as a coach and how it seemed to him a slight that he didnt get more hc consideration. He'll leap at the chance if its presented at a decent organization. He's not grooming our next d coordinator. He's grooming his coordinator. Sorry to piss on the parade but he wont be back in 2013.

The San Diego Chargers will attempt to sign him after this season, and I think he will consider it. Last chance as head coach, AFC team, great city, decent QB and offense.

Needs defense.

I don't believe Wade's going anywhere. Here he has the potential of helping build a dynasty for which he has and will be given a great deal of the credit.
Going to San Diego will be having the end of his legacy following that of Johnny Unitas.

He says he wants to be a Head Coach again. I'm just taking him at his word.

I believe he will get offers, and because of his expressed desire, he will accept one. But, we will know in January or February.

So...your assuming we get to the Superbowl first.....
He might leave even if we dont......
He still thinks he can head coach. I would not put it past some owner to take a chance and sign him to be a head coach again.

Even if Wade doesn't leave, how many more years do you think he want to do this job? He's getting up there in age and I hope he continues to coach here for a long time, but I hope we're also grooming a replacement d-coordinator behind the scenes. Someone like a Vance Joseph who has done a great job with the secondary over the past couple of years.

To me it's all about looking at the NFL coaching carousel possilby next season.

To me there's likely going to be 3 premier openings S.D. , Dallas, and Philly.

There's likely to be an opening in K.C., Cleveland, and it's going to go down the wire to see if Rex can keep his job in N.Y. (Even then offensively the team is a cluster..)

We can cross off Dallas, I think they're going to go hard after Cowher or lure Gruden out of the booth. I also think Philly will be doing the same as well. At the end of the day I don't think either are going to be after him.

Though Wade does have some S.D. ties I also see AJ Smith prolly getting shown the door and this franchise is likely going to want to go in a totally different direction.

The rest will come down to how BADLY he really does want to be a HC because of the last 3 options....while there's differing parts to each none are premier or stepping into good situations.

At the end of the day.....he's got in damn good in Houston. He gets just as much control (and credit) as a HC here. He gets paid more than some HCs do, though I don't think money is a huge fact. He has a chance to be an icon in the city, if he already isn't. To top it off he's in a very stable situation, he doesn't have to look over his back all the time, and he's going to more than have his own say in personnel.

He is getting up there in age. The trend we see is for the younger OC/DC coordinators to get the Head coaching jobs. We are not really seeing older coaches, in their mid 60s who have never won superbowls getting the jobs. He may want a head coaching job, I just wonder if last year was his last real chance.

Hes making a house in houston, if he plans on moving away why build a house here? I think his wife and him decided its time to sette down..i feel he will be here for maybe 5 years then retires( hopefully we have a ring by then).

It's great that Wade is building a house here, but with the amount of jack he makes per year, he can afford a house or two in different parts do the country

I can't worry about this. But, if I was a betting man, I would bet he'll be here next season. Nothing we can do about it anyway.

Wade wins superbowl, then retires from the NFL to bring a national championship to the University of Houston as head coach of them fighting H-town Coogazz!

OH YEAH!!

Amazing that Phillips can be considered for 2012 but not 2013 due to age (66).
Amazing that all coaches have a house one place and cannot coach in another.
Amazing that some of you cannot think past next game. As long as I have a bowel movement today, no need to be concerned about having toilet paper for tomorrow.

People are always so quick to say that someone failed as a HC. How did he fail? He went 34-22 as a HC. He only had one losing season and was fired at mid point of that season. So he had 3 out of 4 winning seasons while coaching some of the worst misfit teams in history. ONe of those years they went 13-3 having the best record in the NFC. Wade is also the only HC to win a playoff game for the Cowboys for like 15 years or something like that . Wade did not fail at all. He had the type of success that a lot of coaches would have been proud of. Jerry gave him a really short leash and wanted Garrett all along. Wade did a pretty good job though.

Just say no to that fat, obnoxious, bitchmade, piece of ****ing **** Rex Ryan. If that guy ever steps foot into our franchise, I'm done with the team until he's gone.

I wouldn't give a ____ !

We'd have a superbowl, I'd be too busy relishing that to even care. Hopefully the Texans have learned their lesson.

IMO the coaches in the NFL are WAY WAY more important than the players. The players come and go but the coaches don't. If Wade leaves then pay another coveted DC and realize the importance of having great coaches.

Who pissed in your cheerios?

This topic is some serious cart-before-the-horse stuff.

Also, in case nobody has figured it out yet.....

When he says, "I'd like to be a head coach again"-

He means, "I'd absolutely take Gary's job if offered".

Its there an owner dumb enough to make Wade a head coach again?

The best defensive coach in the game, just a horrible head guy.

Then again, Norv has gotten a slew of jobs...

Dude, it's only football. Calm down.

No, it's not "only football". I root for groups I can be proud of. I can't be proud of people I don't like.

It's about branding. It's about conducting your organization in a proper, respectable, orderly, classy fashion.

Rex Ryan is the antithesis of "Houston Texans", and the antithesis of all the reasons I love this football team.

Because Rex Ryan loves to talk? Sure, we all got tired of his act a few years ago but how much of that is his fault and how much of it is ESPN showcasing it because he's in New York. Fact is, he can coach defense. If it ever came to the point that he's looking for a job and the Texans have an opening because Wade left, then hell yes you take a look. I don't care so much about his attitude. It never seemed to be a problem in Baltimore.

What everyone has failed to point out is the relationship Wade has with Bum. They are very close, and I think that wade knows he is very limited on the amount of time remaining to spend with his dad. He has it made here, and gets to spend time with his dad. He will stay!

If Houston made a key to the city. it would go to the Phillips family..

They were just as close when Wade accepted an interview in Florida last off season.

It should be about winning and only winning. That's why they keep score.

Unfortunately to many fans care about all of the periphreal stuff and the Texans org felt no pressure to put the best product possible on the field for a DECADE. However they did make alot of $$$$.

When the fans started turning on the franchise/Gary, BoB magically found the $$$$ to sign Wade to a big contract and bring in Manning and Joseph on huge deals as well. All of the sudden the Texans went from also rans to SB contenders. Funny how that works.

What are the reasons you love this team? Are they your moral compass? It's just entertainment. A winning team is much more entertaining to me and I personally dont care what Coaches/players do in their PRIVATE lives. As long as they win on Sundays.

Speaking of this model organization, Do you think it's right that they allowed D.Davis to play on a bad knee, destroying his career? How about last yr when they cut AJ's hamstring loose so the could get him back on the field, probably costing him a spot in the HOF? Manning playing with a bone bruise that C-N-D said had a good chance of breaking if he was allowed to play and that's exactly what happened? (Dont mean to speak for you C-N-D.)

See the thing is the Texans aren't a lily white org. They just do a better job of hiding their skeletons than most teams.
