Schaub: A Changed Man

The Pencil Neck

Hall of Fame
I think a lot of us have noticed some changes in Schaub and his delivery since he's come back from the Lisfranc injury.

In the Raven's Gameday thread, CnD speculated that possibly there's a problem with Schaub that he's making more sidearm deliveries and this might be a recurrence of Schaub's shoulder issues. But I don't think that's it. Other people are noticing more zip and more accuracy.

I've noticed Schaub doing 2 things that I don't recall seeing him do before: the sidearm delivery and the stepback after the throw.

The Sidearm Delivery

I think the sidearm delivery is a conscious choice on Schaub's part. As someone said during the Gameday thread, maybe this developed as a reaction to getting more balls knocked down in practice but it looks to me like Schaub has been studying while he was injured. And it looks to me like he was studying Rich Gannon and Brett Favre.

I think this sidearm delivery thing IS a reaction to the batted balls. I think it's a conscious choice on his part to find better throwing lanes and I think it's improving his accuracy and allowing him to get more zip on the ball. He's looking a lot like Rich Gannon did in his prime. He's getting the ball out from different launch points and he's getting it around guys. He's sneaking it in to some tight windows.

The Stepback

When Schaub is under pressure up the middle now, he seems to throw even as he's stepping back. It almost looks like cowardice but then at other times, he stands tall and takes the beating. He's no coward and he's willing to take a beating. I don't think anyone can call out Schaub when it comes to toughness.

But the guy who used to do that throw/stepback thing all the time was Brett Favre. It seems counter-intuitive to me that this stepback approach would be a good thing but it's hard to argue with the results.

So. I think that having to sit and watch TJ take this team into the playoffs really had an impact on Matt. I think he really sat down and evaluated his strengths and weaknesses and made some decisions to build on what he can and can't do to become a better QB. And I think he's really upped his game.

I have a comment on the batted ball theory. Prior to Wade Phillips, Kubiak did not like the D-lineman batting the balls down in practice. Last year, in practice, they allowed the D-linemen to bat down balls. Given how good we are at swatting down passes, I'm certain Schaub learned how to adjust after seeing it happen so many times.

I wonder what the reason behind not allowing balls to be batted in practice was

Kubes said cuz he wanted his QBs to practice making the accurate throw or something like that. Then Wade was like F that, were not having any of that.

Yep, turned out to be more of a real game situation practice on both sides which makes our team more prepare for the game. Good thing Wade allowed our D to sWATT the balls.

Go Texans!!!

Well, TNP, you've done it again. Saved me a whole lot of keystrokes that is. I think you've knocked this one out of the park. Notice when Matt employs the side armed delivery is in exactly these circumstances and instead of the ball being batted and possibly picked it just sails right on by the defender on a string and goes to the good guys. Matt's a pretty sharp cookie. He's using all the tools in his box and we can't ask for more. (though I'm sure a few will )

All I know is he caused the reigning NFL DPOY to hesitate just long enough to turn the corner when he saw Schaub was ready to lay the wood.

Definitely to the bolded, it's pretty clear to me. And he even overthrew KW yesterday with a "normal" delivery. He's playing it smart throwing short passes into tight windows, meaning between cluttered up lineman with their hands up.

As Matt just signed a new contract I hope he continues to find ways to get better and increase his longevity.

Also, Schaub is about 400 yds short of 20,000 for his career. Not bad considering he backed up Vick for a few years and he's been out a number of games with the Texans. He'll never catch Favre or Marino, but if he stays healthy, he could have a nice career here. Especially if there's a few :trophy: in his future!

CnD always has some good stuff, and I've learned to take whatever he says seriously, but with the sidearm throws it seems very situational and a good choice by Schaub... It seems to be something more related to Schaub adapting to the game, not an old injury that's creeping up... Then again, I wouldn't be shocked if CnD turns out to be right.....aaaagain...

As for the backstep, I really don't know...

Yeah. I rewatched the game when I got home. Suggs was burning around that corner with a head of steam! Who said Matt has cement shoes. Dude was movin' on to get out of #55's way but I *think* he made Suggs alter coarse "a little". :stirpot:

When I was watching, I saw Matt heading over to throw a block, and I was impressed and dumbfounded at the same time. My reaction was "holy cow, go Matt! No wait, what the hell are...oh, nevermind"

Nope, Matt has cement shoes most of time but, when he saw Suggs coming at him, he changed his shoes to ultra light weight and got out of Suggs's way fast. I mean, really fast. haha

This was my thought. It looked like he was going to block-then thought better of it. He jumped in front then out of the way.

I don think it had an effect on Suggs run thought so it was effective.

I remember the PA announcer saying, "MATT SCHAUB WITH A BLOCK!"

And then they showed the replay and he got out of the way. I had a hearty laugh after that one.

Schaub learned these from Keenum!

It doens't matter where these developments come from, but it's all good.

Two years ago, I said Schaub had started taken several steps to become a really really good QB.

In 09, I wouldn't have enough confidence in Schaub in the play-offs; now, I absolutely does.
