UK gets 2 NFL games next year

Although the Jags have signed up to 'host' 4 regular season games over 4 years in London (starting with their first game against the 9ers next Oct) we have now been given a 2nd regular season game next Sept. Vikings hosting the Steelers, also in London. When I was at the fans forum a short while back we got to meet and ask questions to a few players (Ray Lewis, Nate Solder and Steven Jackson)...we also got to ask questions to the the MD of NFLUK, Alistair Kirkwood. A friend of mine asked him why we will get multiple games in London instead of other parts of the UK... he said that the NFL is comfortable with London (Wembley) He also said he would have liked to have games in Wales or Scotland, but the fact that this would mean an additional flight makes it more tricky.... He said NFL teams/players are creatures of habit. They're using the same hotels/ training facilities that teams have used each time they come to the UK and they want to stick to that. I guess thats enough (who am I to argue, being from London and all ;) .

As a UK fan I'm excited to see any NFL games over here.(I saw the Bears play the Bucs last year and I'm off to see the Rams host the Pats in a week and a halfs time)...Having said that I hope the Texans never give up a home game to come over...double standards on my part, sure..but I just don't want that to happen. I doubt it will as there are other teams who don't mind being the host team and others who will only travel if they are the road team. Also, I get the impression that the teams that will come and host regularly are struggling to fill their own stadiums (Jags, Bucs etc)...the Texans will never have that problem thank goodness :)

They could do that as the road team but I'd never want them to give up a home game...It's not fair on the season ticket holders either. At least the Jags have an excuse...tarping a third of their stadium to avoid blackouts tells me that the fans aint all that bothered about the Jags. I imagine the saturation of the florida market with sports teams hasn't helped matters. The Bucs - same thing.

You own a share in the team or something? Why in the world would anyone care about the Texans "building their brand"?

Home games are played at home. Every time somebody goes across the ocean and puts on a show for the UK somebody is losing a home game.

I'm entirely against it. Hope the Texans never do it.

I feel partially the same. Thats what I meant by double standards on my part....I enjoy seeing live NFL when it comes here as most UK fans do(we feel blessed to see any team as we know it's a niche sport in the UK and while personally it's my own favourite sport it's not the most popular sport in the UK - for that reason I genuinely feel fortunate to see teams come over .....however I wouldn't want the Texans giving up a home game EVER.

I was checking out the Jaguars message boards a while back and many of those guys are in favour of coming over to the UK. Maybe they think that if they get more exposure it will ultimately help to build their fanbase back in Jax so they can start to remove the tarp from the seats..or maybe not...I dunno. I'm with you though...I'm from the UK and I hate the thought of the Texans ever coming over as a home team.

Just checked the Vikings message board and many of their fans on the board seem to ok with it. I wonder if this is a pattern - teams that fail to sell out their stadiums tend to be more open to it...I doubt this reflects the season ticket holders views though (as dwindling as they may be). I doubt we'll ever see teams like the Packers, Giants, Jets, Steelers, Texans, Cowboys etc giving up a home game for obvious reasons.

Texans will never have a problem selling out Reliant...hence no need to ever go abroad!

Sorry to inform you, the Jags haven't had a black out since 2010. They have more attendence and a better ticket sales in the NFL and especially, in the state of FL. The stadium is tarpped because the stadium is too big...w/the tarps, still one of the bigger seated stadiums in the NFL. I'm pissed, I'm losing 1 home game to London, for 4 years! That's not fair to me! If you are reading the Jags board, the Jag fans aren't happy of losing 1 home game, for the next 4 years. Our new owner, Khan, wants to expand the Jags overseas for more notability and revenue. He is a businessman. The economy is what lead to the downfall in ticket sales from 2008-2009..and a poorly run franchise, w/a losing record. The Jags, this year is terrible! I've never seen a team this terrible...the WORST! The team will be blown up again...Khan will build a winner, Just going to take time. Hopefully, they will be able to produce an exciting game next year vs 49ers. The tarps have nothing to do for blackouts. Matter in fact, the last game vs. Bears, some tarps were removed.

Can you explain a little more? I was under the impression that the tarps were put up to circumvent the blackout rule. Let's not get overly generous regarding some tarps for the Bears game. Only ONE was removed... section 403... and I would probably be thanking Bears fans for parking their butts in your stadium.

Don't be sorry bud, I hope for Jags fans that things are not as bad as I thought. I'm only going on what I read so I could be way off.... I just figured that without the tarps blackouts would be inevitable, right? .To say the reason they have to tarp the seats because the stadium is too big is like saying the glass is half full .. Lets be honest, the failure to reach the play-offs in 10 out of 12 years has caused many fed up fans to stay away....I read that the Jags are the least supported NFL team and although you havent blacked out for a few years you have still struggled(for many games) to fill the stadium even with the copious amounts of seats tarped....I suspect the only way you'd regularly fill that stadium with the seats untarped is if Florida played Georgia each week...

You say that the Jags fans aren't happy at losing 1 home game. Well sure, I doubt any fan with a season ticket would be happy...but reading the forums there seems to be a general sense of apathy to the whole thing. Some fans seem excited about it though as they will be travelling over...others don't really mind either way but can understand given the struggle to sell seats..Now don't get me wrong, there will be fans who hate the idea. I would hate the idea if it was my team, for sure. But many fans have either said they don't mind or actually want to make the trip themselves...whether they still feel the same way after 1 or 2 years into the 4 is anyones guess but I somehow doubt it.

The player Marcedes Lewis said "It's just good for the Jaguar brand,It's exciting to go over there and put ourselves on the map worldwide. When I got drafted in 06, there were some of my family members who didn't even know who the Jaguars were."

One thing that might be good for the Jags fans though...Losing a game to London each year will reduce the Jags season tickets by 10% ...this might entice people to the remaining games as the price will be lower. Heres hoping.

Yep

This is just another case of God'ell giving the finger to the fans who made the NFL the most popular sport in this country. Rog has the Napolean complex. IMHO You never saw Tagliabue's name always in some controversy like you do God'ells. He's ruining the game many people gave up alot of their lives to make the NFL what it is today. Kinda sad in a way.

Rog needs to go away, but it's not going to happen because the owners made so much $$$$ in last yrs CBA.
 
I've been to London several times and love the place. BUT, I hate the idea of playing games across the "big pond!" Heck, I can't always afford to travel to Texan games here in the States! How the hell does the NFL think fans can afford to travel to Europe for a football game??! THAT'S right, they don't care about fans in the USA!! It's all about the almighty dollar!

Sorry London, you and all our other European fans are great, and it's fantastic that you support our Texans, but, this is a BAD idea. Teams have enough trouble recovering from jet lag here in the states, plus, long travel times has to interfere with practice time on the field. if it's preseason, bring it on, who cares!! BUT, reg season games should be played in the good old USofA!! JMO!!
 
I am completely against any teams playing regular season games overseas. It is not fair to the "home" team especially or their fans. I hope the Texans are never forced to play a game in London.

Both good posts....thats why I feel a kind of double standard where I am concerned. I would never want Texans to give up a home game to come here but wouldn't mind seeing them or any other team as the road team obviously...but thats only because (If I'm completely honest) the selfish side of me comes out so that I get the chance to see live NFL whereas I wouldn't ordinarily as I can't afford to travel (well, not at the moment anyway). Not only do we get to see live games but we make an entire weekend out of it...from Fri-Sun there are events going on that make it a really exciting weekend..Last year we had Cuba gooding Jnr as a special guest, MArshall Faulk, and the tampa bay Bucs cheerleaders and the chicago bears marching band all performing for us...plus many other cool things that make it an awesome weekend for the UK football fans....

I can see how it's unfair to the fans though so I appreciate their side of things...If I had to vote between every team giving up at least one home game to come to the UK or the decision to stop all overseas games, I'd vote for the latter as I wouldn't want that to happen. I don't think Texans fans have anything to worry about though as I doubt they'll ever need to give up a home game...I also agree with those who say it's all about the money...of course it is. Whatever happens in the future though I'm just happy to support these Texans from overseas...even if we got our own NFL team (a ridiculous idea which still gets bandied about) I would never consider switching.
