Chris Morteson hasn't posted anything on twitter, but he wrote this article for ESPN earlier. No done deal yet, but it looks close.

The NFL and the NFL Referees Association made enough progress in negotiations Tuesday night that the possibility of the locked-out officials returning in time to work this week's games has been discussed, according to sources on both sides.

An agreement in principle is at hand, according to one source familiar to talks, although NFL owners have postured with a "no more compromise" stance.

Although league sources said it would take a week to get the locked-out officials on the field, the NFLRA says its 121 referees have been trained on the new rules implemented last season, have already passed physicals or are prepared to pass physicals immediately. New official game uniforms designed by Nike are "hardly an obstacle," according to a source.

Both sides have made concessions on previous sticking points such as a taxi squad of 21 new officials and pension plans that sources say the final meaningful hurdle is, as one source said, "about a little more money."

While league sources say owners who participated in a conference call with commissioner Roger Goodell during Tuesday's talks had instructed the negotiating team to set a firm barrier for the financial settlement, the NFLRA is prepared to accept a new agreement primarily in the form of a "ratification bonus," which would compensate its 121-member union for concessions it is willing to make.

The NFLRA and the league have all but agreed on developing a 21-member "taxi squad" that Goodell has pushed, but not at the financial cost of the union members.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that an agreement between the NFL and NFLRA is at hand.

With a deal in principle reached Wednesday morning, the regular officials could be back as soon as this week. All it took was one of the worst calls in league history in front of a national audience on Monday Night Football. The issue will hopefully be put to bed now.

I'm asking for confirmation. Is it confirmed like the thread says?? No.

Have ESPN reporters been wrong on twitter before? Absolutely.

I accept an actual confirmation from the NFL, not freaking CM on twitter.

I'm old school that way, I know better than to believe today's "journalists" at their word.

Apparently they worked out the training and development of new and fill-in refs, but the pension is still an issue. Reportedly, some hard-line owners got involved late.

That's what they need to change. They need the owners out of the equation. If it was that way all along the NFL wouldn't be in this position.

I wonder if Bud Adams flew in the room on a power chair shooting double birdies at the regular refs.

The taxi squad compromise is just a spit in the bucket stick point compared to the benefits package that the NFL is has still not agreed to. One week may be too soon to expect the regular refs back on the field........unless some of Vegas crime bosses decide to break a couple of knee caps.
 
Good to hear that they are close to returning. Enjoy all the adulation while it lasts regular zebras. It'll last about 5 mins and everything will return to normal and we'll go back to hating all refs again.

I cant stand Ed (Gun Show) Hochuli

Jerome (Ladies Man) Boger

Jeff (Bean Bag) Triplete.

Carey is the only honest/not incompetent ref of the bunch.

The regular refs will be back fixing games again soon. Vegas took a bath Monday night.

Daopoulos: NFL, NFLRA deal is done

NBC picked the right year to hire an officiating consultant.

Jim Daopoulos, a long-time official and supervisor of officials, joined NBC this season. And he tells PFT that the NFL and NFL Referees Association have signed a new deal.

A crew is being assembled to work Thursday night’s game between the Browns and Ravens. Then, on Friday, the officials will travel to Dallas to retrieve their equipment and receive their game assignments for Sunday and Monday, with the same crews working together as last year.

Details are still not clear, but Daopoulos says that the much-debated pension issue was resolved with the current defined-benefit plan remaining in place for five years before switching to a 401(k)-style defined contribution plan.

Also, it’s believed that the deal will cover five more years before this one, which means that we’ll potentially be doing this again in 2018.

You'd prefer the replacement refs? After watching 3 weeks of foot locker refs screwing up calls, I think it's pretty obvious that no matter how much we as fans love to ***** at the regular refs, they're much more competent than what we've seen so far this season.

I'm not sure I understand where you're coming from. What makes you think they "took a bath"? Everything I'm reading and hearing says that Vegas actually benefitted from the outcome, as a clear majority of the betting public was on the Packers.

Jeff Sherman, assistant manager at the SuperBook, said 85 percent of the tickets at his book were on Green Bay and estimates the statewide handle at $15 million. The handle is the total amount wagered on the game-in straight bets, over/unders, parlays, teasers, etc. The Seahawks’ 14-12 win resulted in what Sherman characterized as a “six-figure” swing in favor of the book.

Sad to see a billion dollar corporation fold under pressure. I guess they didn't mind throwing the replacements under the bus after all. Didn't even wait a week or two just to stick up for them.

:shrug:

Oh well. Back to our regularly scheduled ****ing up of the rules.

Failed? How were they failed? Both the players and the refs gave in more than the owners according to all the pundits. The owners "won" both times.

Hell, they refs pension is still going to be turned into a 401k, just in 5 years. This will save the league a ton of money.

Looks like the owners pretty much had their way with the officials by the terms of the final deal. From the article linked above:
The league released the following terms of the agreement:

» The current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season (or until the official earns 20 years of service). The defined benefit plan then will be frozen.

» Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution arrangement, which will have two elements: an annual league contribution made on behalf of each game official that will begin with an average of more than $18,000 per official and increase to more than $23,000 per official in 2019, and a partial match on any additional contribution that an official makes to his 401(k) account.

» Apart from their benefit package, the game officials' compensation will increase from an average of $149,000 per year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019.

» Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option of hiring a number of officials on a full-time basis to work year-round, including on the field.

» The NFL will have the option to retain additional officials for training and development purposes and can assign those additional officials to work NFL games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the NFL.
