Alfred Morris drives a $1,300 car to Redskins Park

Amid a sea of big-rimmed Escalades and decked-out BMWs, the NFL's leading rookie rusher rolls into Redskins Park on 14s.

Alfred Morris, the sixth-round draft pick who was anointed the Washington Redskins surprise starter and is currently tied for first in the NFC in rushing touchdowns, is still driving his 1991 Mazda 626 to work.

It's got all the amenities: cloth seats, power steering, tape deck, AM and FM radio and has the added bonus of being made the same year the Redskins last won a Super Bowl.

"It has some sentimental value to it now," Morris told The Redskins Blog. "It just keeps me grounded, where I came from and all the hard work for me to get to this point. So that's what helps me."

In this day and age where the spoiled athlete dominate headlines, this is a refreshing story about a player staying humble and keeping it real.
 
Good for him, a little to the extreme but better than the other end of the scale.



My car is 8 going on 9 years old but does have a cd player and leather seats :koolaid:
 
I saw that story on Yahoo yesterday as well and loved it. It's refreshing to see an athlete who's grounded and not so full of himself. Let's hope he can stay with the team for a while and make some money.
 
As somebody who's first car was a 1993 Nissan Sentra (and currently drives a 1995 Geo Prizm), I love this article. I cried the day I cut ties with my Sentra.
 
I think we might be giving dude too much credit here. I guessing he is not the only late round or UDFA rookie who is still driving his college car. He did not get some insane signing bonus, was not guaranteed a roster spot with 3 or 4 dudes already ahead of him in camp, and he has earned all of two weeks of pay. Morris should not been out new car shopping. Better than finding out he is rolling in a pimped out Escalade or something, but not being stupid should not be a news story. Wake me in two or three years, and tell me he is driving a Prius or a Mazda 3 or ford ranger or something then listen to frugality and humility talk.
 
I went to the First and Ten Minicamp hosted by Andre, Dunta, and DeMeco Ryans the summer Dunta left. Andre drove up in a red Ferrari, Dunta drove here from Atlanta in his Escalade. DeMeco Ryans pulled up in his older Ford Explorer (two door by the way). I found it impressive that DeMeco was that humble.
 
This is silly. Driving in a beat-up car you've had for 5 years vs driving around in the latest and greatest <whatever> doesn't mean you're "keeping it real" and someone who's the reverse has lost their touch with where they came from.

I drive a 1991 Oldsmobile 98 Regency...with 225K miles on her. I'm keepin' it real dog! Truthfully, I'd LIKE to think that if I had a big pile of cash I'd still be driving the "Keepin' it real Oldsmobile."

Yeah, a couple of years back I was so busy trying to get more of my Saturn, that i had as my wife termed it, "$1,000 oil changes." she basically pulled out the bills and calculator, and showed all my efforts to not have a new car note cost us money.
 
Figuring that he's received two game checks and the bonus, then taking out for taxes and a cut for his agent, our conservative estimate is that Morris has netted $90,000 during his time in Washington.

Not a lot to blow on a car even if he wanted to... Living in DC is expensive.
