Four-time league MVP Peyton Manning, at practice Thursday, had a strong debut with the Broncos. But he threw three interceptions in the first quarter of their Week 2 game against Atlanta. (John Leyba, The Denver Post)

There's only one way the Broncos beat Houston on Sunday: Peyton Manning is going to have to dress up his wobbly passes so they look prettier than the tight spirals thrown by Houston quarterback Matt Schaub.

The Texans are a stronger team than Denver.

So, for the Broncos to win, Manning needs to play more like a feisty legend than a 36-year-old quarterback whose arm strength is an open, festering topic of debate.

Hey, relax. He's working on it.

During the fleeting moments when practice was open to prying eyes on Thursday, Manning asked his pals in the media to step back from the field during a passing drill. Why?

"Those wobblers still hurt if they hit you in the head," Manning warned.

It was a zinger that would do any "Saturday Night Live" writer proud.

Even when Manning's passes lack zip his humor maintains its bite. Even when his performance on the field is less than razor sharp, there's a steely edge to Manning you've got to love.

Despite his well-deserved reputation for being cool under pressure, there's a molten competitiveness never far from the surface of Manning. He's a sore loser. And that's good, especially in a business where the line between success and failure is thin, even for players with Hall of Fame credentials.

When Manning falls short of awesome, we've discovered he can be PGM. Peyton Grumpy Manning.

In the aftermath of his first setback in a Broncos uniform, and it could certainly be argued
Manning was the No. 1 reason for defeat, Peyton has displayed a prickly side.

Asked about his arm strength, Manning responded with a "whatever" any adolescent with an attitude could understand. Without being prompted, Manning wanted everybody to understand the proper reading of his body language on the sideline during the 27-21 loss in Atlanta was "determined" rather than "dejected."

The last thing any athlete, especially a legendary athlete, wants to be seen as? Yesterday's news. Fair or not, Manning has two choices: Get his mojo back. Or stay stuck in the 24/7 churn of NFL speculation regarding the possible erosion of his skills.

I asked Broncos receiver Brandon Stokley, who has a long history with Manning, if he can tell when the veteran quarterback is ticked. "You can kind of look at him and tell," Stokley said. "It's pretty obvious."

It is obvious that for the first time, Denver has witnessed what Manning looks like when he's mad.

And somebody's got to pay.

Keep in mind that Manning, even with his comfort level playing with his system familiar Colts has not been very good at gaining vengeance after his past three-interception games (15). In those games, he has reached a ragged 8-7 record with 26 TDs versus 23 picks.

Was going to post the same thing. For qb's I don't buy the anger angle. Those guys don't need to play angry and upset.
 
I think after Sundays game ....he will be even more mad and frustrated because all his old notes on the Texan defense did not work this time.....lol
 
I'd be mad too if my arm was shot. He was exposed last game. Can he still pull off a win here or there? Absolutely. But the start to last game was not pretty. If he shows the same arm strength throwing to the right against Joseph, he'll be eaten alive. Can't wait.
 
Anger can't make nerves regenerate.

All this "it's the same old Peyton" talk from the Texans camp is gamesmanship. They are going to wreck him.
 
Good, let him be mad. Maybe he'll try to force those wobblers. My only concern is how the Texans secondary handles those bad passes. Got to be tougher to catch, right?

Those are irrelevant historical statistics. I didn't see the article label him as "mad"; it basically depicted him as being a strong competitor and therefore disappointed with his performance in the Atlanta game. That's understandable.

From Monday onwards I really want to see Manning get back to his best. He's one of the greats of all time and I feel like I've been forced to hate him all this time because of who he played for, when it would have been better to sit back and enjoy watching a great player who treats the job of QBing the right way, a real student of the game and it shows on Sundays.

Said it all along though, can't really see what he has to gain by coming back apart from money. I still worry that he's one play away from regretting it for the rest of his life which would be a shame.

I really feel as if we're all set to absolutely take him to pieces tomorrow, just hope this isn't a trap game for us, it does seem as if everyone in the media thinks we're big favourites, but while we're a more complete team than Denver, they do have enough pieces to win if they all perform to their potential.
 
I'm sure he was mad after his 1st INT on Monday night, likely after the 2nd one too. That anger didn't really prevent him from throwing the 3rd.
 
If he's mad now, just wait until we're through with him on Sunday.

No quarter for the old and infirm. It's going to get real for PM on Sunday.

I'm not sure that the media thinks we are big favorites. The two guys I heard on Sirius NFL both picked Denver.
 
We've been trained for most of our existence to expect the worst. We've only had 1 year of practice of expecting the best. Its no wonder people are worried about Manning.

But lets remember: Manning has never faced the Texans with Wade Phillips as our DC
Manning is not with the Colts

I think it will be a good game, but its nothing more than a good game between two good teams. Theres no inherent advantage for us or for Manning, as this isn't the same Texans defense that played Indy

But your post along with others in this thread have lightened me up. Then again, I'm always nervous for every game.
 
 
I think it's all bs. The guy gave 100% last week and will give 100% this week. It's not like were talking about Mario Williams effort level.

This is basically what I was saying to GP in another thread.

We, the FANS, have been putting up with Manning beating us up and dominating us for 9 years. We associate Manning with losing because he's beaten us in so many damned different ways. And we've only beaten his team twice (with him playing).

BUT.

This is not only a new defense but there are a lot o players on this team who haven't been dominated by Manning like that. JJ Watt, JJo, Cushing, Reed, Barwin, D. Manning, etc. -- those guys don't have that same history and don't feel the same way we, the fans, do. JJ Watt and Brooks Reed have never even faced him. Cushing and Barwin haven't faced him much -- definitely not enough for that sort of mystique to have built up in their minds.

He's 16-2 vs. the Texans, no matter what he's beaten us more than we'll ever beat him. We should not take this game lightly whether it's a wobbler or a tight spiral it still counts for 6 points, and he was likely one more possession away from winning that game back for his team.
 
I have all the respect in the world for Manning, but I want the Texans to give him an ass kicking he will remember on his death bed. We owe him a few of those.
