According to a release from the school Friday, Smith is attending the funeral of his younger brother Bart, who died Monday -- the same day as Smith's news conference antics, which went viral, and the same day he signed off on new bankruptcy documents. Bart Smith was 53.

His brother may have been about to die when he had that press conference, or his brother passed earlier that day. Either way I agree John L. Smith deserves a bit of slack. He's had a rough couple of weeks.
