Hasn't Wells improved greatly since his days of running into the line and dropping down like a gut punched teenager?

I was especially happy to see him hit the holes, minus the 1 play where we could not get 2 yards for a first down. Good to see him step it up, now there's value. Good job for Casserly on this one......holy.....cow....did I say that?
 
Wells 'growing up' has a lot to do with the fact that he's had no future contract the last two seasons. He will be eligible for UFA after this season and I'm sure he's trying to show the rest of the league what he can do. I give him credit for trying whatever the motivation. He responded well after Dom benched him back in '03 or whenever it was, and forced him to become a special teams player just to make the 53.

Wells still gets tackled by the first person to reach him. Even if its a CB. Did Wells have a good game yesterday and show improvement. SURE DID, for Wells that is. Course when your at the basement level of RB play, you don't have much choice but to improve ONE day.

I will say he did an excellant job of stretching for the TD. A very good awareness of where he was on the field. BUT, I ain't sold on his RB skills yet. Why is that almost all of the rest of the NFL backup RB's can break an occasional tackle and gain more yardage and Wells can't? I didn't see a single time when he slipped a tackle or ran as hard as his size would indicate he COULD run like. I saw a whole lot of times when someone would arm tackle him and he would fall like a sack of potatoes.
 
I think his yards per carry yesterday were greater than Davis's were the past couple of games, and he compared well to Davis when he played for extended periods last year as was analyzed on a recent thread.

I think he has been doing well when called on the last couple of years when compared to the RB in front of him on the depth chart. He just doesn't get the credit on this board for whatever reason.

I dunno.....I to fail to see how we lose much at all when he's in the game instead of DD ?
 
Wells, like most players play harder when they fighting for playing time...go back to his rookie year and he started down on the depth chart and ran hard everytime he got the ball but after starting a few games he seemed to get "comfortable" and relax. For the old Oiler fans, kinda like Gary Brown. Once he became the feature back he for whatever reason, coasted. Good thing about Wells is that he has bounced back and plays hard when he gets his chances and that will keep him in the league. Beats a 9 to 5 job!:texflag:

Wells is fun to watch and does bring some excitement with his energy and special teams play. I don't know if he could be an every down back but is a good backup.
 
Wells is listed at 6-1 245, DD at 5-9 216. Wells gets arm tackled by the first weiny to show up and make an attempt. DD knocks the first tackler backwards, the second tackler on him stops his forward progress and stands him up, the third tackler there actually tackles him.

You people do realize how back ackwards this is right? I mean the 245 lb Wells runs like he is wearing a tu-tu most of the time and not pads. THAT is why he lost the starting job to the RB that actually runs LIKE a 245 RB is supposed to, but DD only weighs in at 216.

Wells is just now beginning to actually fall forward while he is running. So hey, he is showing some definite improvement. But he is NO WHERE near the quality and hard hitter than he should be, and he is definitely NOT as good as DD,IMHO.

Wells is a 245 lb 3rd down back. And special teamer. He's found his niche in the NFL.

And yet they average similar yards per carry? Something isn't computing there, unless Wells is making the first two tacklers miss?????? I'm not saying Wells is better, I'm saying he's not near as bad as he's made out to be.

on this I can't argue lately he has played much better, for whatever reason, contract, FA, etc.

I will have to agree that he was definitely on my short list of replacable players, but lately he has played well enough to perhaps make me at least take another look and re-evaluate my original impression. Heck I might even let him play on my Texans team for the right money in the future. :texflag:
 
Wells has improved greatly from his rookie year.. and anyone who cant see that, has their "screw wells" goggles on.

He hits the hole faster, runs stronger, and MAKES PEOPLE MISS. I dont know where this whole "he gets tackled by the first guy" junk comes from.. sometimes he does.. but even the best RB in the league gets tackled by the first guy sometimes.. but watch the jacksonville game again and you will see some beautiful power runs where he just barreled through 1-3 guys for big gains.

Id love to see more of Wells.. I think he has shown improvement, not because he wants playing time, but because he has HONESTLY IMPROVED. I think that if we gave him the chance, he could be a back comparable to DD. If nothing else.. I think he is an honest to god good choice for 15-20 carries a game as our change of pace back.


BTW.. when Morency came in, he showed the same "slipping" problem. Someone needs to tell that boy to quit greasing the bottom of his shoes.
 
I am just happy the Texans have a RB like Wells to turn to when DD can't go. I can't imagine what the game would have been like with Hollings or Morency starting.
 
imo he is not as good (but similar) to Anthony Thomas, and teams always look to replace him. I don't think anyone has picked him up (yet) after the Cowboys cut him. I know he got a look in Green Bay but they signed Walter Williams instead.
 
Thomas got signed by the Saints today.

I think Wells has been just what he has been asked to do-Be a backup. I think he is a great back up but I also think he needs to see the field more because of his pass catching ability.

I agree. And that might be as good as it gets for him.

He has looked alright the past couple of games, but DD is a much better RB at this point.
 
I would defintely re-sign Wells, I see a new trend in the NFL, two back combos.
I think Ricky and Brown, the Denver guys, and I think the two Chicago backs will set this trend off. Why not keep Wells and DD. I don't think that there will be much money out there for Wells and by keeping both ( assuming tht Wells is uesed more) we can extend the careers of both and they will be good for a long time.
