Week 3 vs. Broncos is going to be tough...

I'm not going to lie, I think we missed a good opportunity to upgrade our QB position. The decision to go with Schaub, and to even re-up Schaub for four more years...I dunno, I think Manning in our offense would feast every Sunday.

If you didn't think it was already gonna be tough before this then you are delusional.

And as far as him coming here, I think deep down you know that would never work. The control freak that Gary Kubiak is, and Peyton Manning changing practically every play at the line of scrimmage and calling off the Punt/FG team on a 4th down would make Kube's head explode.

If we could have had him, and Kubiak passed on him because he's a control freak, then I'm glad we have to face him, and whatever consequences result from that decision.

That's not the only reason, it comes down to how the team is built. And our team is built to run with a healthy sprinkling of passing to guys like AJ, OD, whoever else decides to show up. And who else runs the play action, which our pass game is primarily built around, better than Schaub? I don't think you can find many. Plus Schaub is Kubiak's guy and he'll go with his guys until it costs him his job nearly(see Frank Bush). Schaub is a top 10-12 QB and you'd be hard pressed to find a guy better than him in the open market or in the draft unless you pull an Indy and throw away your season.

Yeah well, maybe.

I just watched Manning take a back-and-forth tennis match with Big Ben and who came out on top??? Manning. And he made it look effortless.

I don't know that any other QB in the past 10 years, other than Tom Brady, has the stuff to take a game and just drill it all the way home and make it look easy.

He handles pressure so well. Yeah, yeah... "Eli has more rings!" but still, all things being equal you're gonna want The Forehead at QB at the end of the day. Killer instinct, dissects defenses like nobody else can. He makes everyone around him feel like they're better than they are. He's an upgrade.

I'd take him. I get what you're saying about our bootlegs and play action. But I can't help but think our weapons are so talented, they become even more dangerous if we threw out the boots and play action and just let Manning pick his guy on every pass play. Andre Johnson, in particular, would be other-worldly IMO.

This is just entirely true. We had a chance to sign the best QB of his era to a team that had all the weapons he could have asked for and a monster defense. We did it because we got a plan and we're sticking to it through thick and thin. All we can do now is hope our plan pans out.

Peyton Manning throwing to AJ with Foster and Tate behind him and Wade's defense getting him the ball back over and over again would have been a ****ing ring-generating machine.

A defense that carried Tim Tebow to the playoffs as a starter .... and won a game. (most overlooked unit in Football right now with all the attention on Manning).

Add the best QB in the game to that .... You have a contender.

This week three matchup could be the best game of the season and a preview of the AFC Championship game.

This is a whole new team. He should be more scared of us than we of him. It will be a great game and may be a preview of the playoffs or the AFC Championship game.

Bring him on. I can't wait to see us get some revenge for the years he beat up on us.

Didn't the Broncos sign him for a pretty big contract? Considering the cuts we had to made this past offseason, there's no way we could have signed him even if we wanted to.

I'm excited for Week 3. Should be one helluva game.

Agree on Schaub, but a better QB was available in the open market this offseason. Not that I was advocating going after him; I honestly don't know what the best move would have been, that's why Kubiak/Smith get paid the big bucks.

He's not invincible. Study the film of the Pittsburgh game and whomever they play this week. Look at his O-line and receivers on film and find the chink in his armor. ANYONE can be beaten. If they go in with that "doom, dispair and agony on me." attitude losing will be a self fulfilling prophesy.

Seriously though, Peyton looked amazingly good last night. The broncos are going to be a tough team to beat, their defense is great and now the offense has a big boost from last year.

The bright side is if any team knows how to game plan for Peyton, it should be us.

I've always wanted to beat Manning (again) when he's at his best. The RonDayne win was alright, but I'd like to see our defense put a whup'n on him.

Don't get me wrong, I love Peyton Manning, because I think he's the best QB of my lifetime..... by far. But, if you want to be the best, you've got to put the best on his ass, again & again, & again.

I agree. We would have had to gut quite a bit from this team to sign Manning. Not worth it, especially when we already had some tough decisions to face to get under the cap.

Denver was in a better position to do it, and I believe that they were willing to go into a bidding war in order to get out from under the Tebow crush. Brilliant move by Elway & co., no matter how it turns out. The Broncos fanbase is so excited about Manning that they have completely forgotten their obsession with Tebow last year.

Then that would have been a coaching problem, because Kubiak's offense has never had jack on Manning's brilliance. I'm not even a Manning guy, but Manning is light years ahead of Kubiak as far as field intelligence with an offense. It's not even close.

I agree with GP. That would have been a power move that would have put the Texans way up there offensively. What's done is done though. We have Schaub and I'm happy with that. We need to start looking for the next big thing at QB now though. That move the Skins made to grab RG3 was a great one. People who bashed them for that move saying they gave up to much don't know squat. When you can grab a franchise QB that has the capabilities of being elite every year you do it without a 2nd thought.

Manning hasn't been the best QB in the game. He has been right there at #2 behind Brady with better weapons, and when Brees got over to the Saints he has been right about the same stats wise and beat their team in the SB. Rodgers has been a tad better then Manning as well or at least about the same in my opinion. Manning is up there though for sure. The guy is arguably top 5 all time I'd say. It's hard to say when you're talking about guys like Brady, Montana, Elway, Unites, Favre, and Marino.

Too bad Peyton couldnt take his colts defense with him.
The Colts defense was bad last season, but the season before that they weren't actually. The season before that, they were like top 6 or something like that when it came to points given up per game. Last season that entire team quit after week 5 or so. I hear what you're saying though. Manning went to a damn good team actually. He just didn't go to a team with great WR's, but every thing else is damn good.

Even RGIII would look sensational in our offense. He looked awfully good with the Redskins, beating the Saints on the road which we haven't been able to do, and the Redskins have far less talent on offense than we do. But under Shanahan he's running the same offense as Kubiak is here. We just have to hope Schaub becomes a little more mobile with that foot as the season progresses.

He looked understandably slow against Miami. Had a chance at an easy TD on a third and goal but refused to jog it in. Opting to force an incompletion in the corner of the end zone. He did run to avoid a sack one time, sliding feet first. I just wish Schaub had a little more mobility out there and wouldn't hesitate to just take off when necessary.

Opposing teams don't expect Schaub to run, which is why he'll always have that daylight to take it in for a touchdown on goal line situations. He had a chance to beat the Raiders last season on the final play had he ran it in. He beat the Dolphins years ago on a sweet little QB sneak as well.

Manning won't be facing the same Texans defense he faced all of those yrs. He'll be facing one that gets after the passer. I've thought that the best team that could surround Manning or a Brady would be a team with a great defense with weapons that the two are capable of over achieving with. You give a QB like Manning and Brady some poor weapons and they'll still throw the ball all over the field. This is a good team that is built for a great QB to take to extra heights. Hell, they just went to the 2nd round of the playoffs led by Tebow last year. Now they have Manning with a point to prove and they're in an easy division. They'll most likely be a team that the Texans should meet in the playoffs as long as they have the season they should have. The Texans and the Broncs are both in bad divisions.

Not necessarily for a QB, but I do believe our F.O. should be collecting draft picks so they can make the moves necessary to get players they target, instead of targeting players they can trade down to get. Work the draft, & not be in a position where they would have to give up "too much" to get "their" guys.

Since 2006, we've been pretty good at getting after Manning. Our biggest problem has been in the secondary. With Jjo, Manning, McCain, & Quin, I think he's going to have to pull the ball down & think twice before he throws the ball.

He's not going to be going to his first read as often as he had in the past.

Disagree. He knows which receiver is the best option before the snap, no matter if he's facing a jv defense or an all-world defense...Manning is going to know where his statistically best option is at before the snap of the ball.

When I watched the Broncos-Steelers game, what I noticed (again, like for 11 years and running now) is that Manning makes the right call on every pass play. He has that quality about him that makes him wholly unique compared to the other QBs. Maybe Brady and Brees are a close comparison, but nobody and I mean NOBODY dissects a defense pre-snap and can accurately--like a machine--figure out which guy is his best option.

When you play Manning, you have to get pressure with your DL on every play AND your secondary has to force the WR/TE/RB to adjust in ways that screws up Manning's plans for each play. Otherwise, you're just praying that Manning's protection blows up or his receiver on the play drops or bobbles the ball. There's not many options when facing #18.

Despite our improved secondary, Manning can still abuse them at will if things are clicking. It takes a Herculean effort to stop Manning. It's like knowing you have to par the remaining holes and also get a birdie somewhere along the way...damn hard to do when you know you have to do it.

Rodgers has arguably been the best, but you could just as easily argue that for Brady or for Brees. Two seasons ago Brady won the MVP and had the best regular season record in the league going 14-2 throwing 36 TD's to only 4 INT's. Last season Brady went to the SB and threw for 39 TD's and 12 picks losing in the SB and also broke the all time passing record for yards along with Brees who owns the record now. Brees has been an animal too. Rodgers won the MVP last season, but Brady won it the season prior. Both went to the SB the last two seasons. There is nothing to concrete to suggest that Rodgers is easily better then everyone else. He is in the discussion and you can make a case for him. I could just as easily make a strong case for Brady who just went to his 5th SB last season. Brees has been phenominal as well though. I'd take Brady over any of them as he has done more with less over the years and continues to put up huge numbers and be at the top of the AFC year in and year out with a revolving door of WR's and coordinators with a pretty stagnant running game and a defense that doesn't scare anyone.

What are you disagreeing with, I said the same thing. We've been able to get pressure on Manning. We sacked him more than any other team since 2006.

I understand he knows "statistically" what his best first option should be before the snap. Our secondary had been so poor in the past that he was able to go to that primary receiver.

I don't think he'll have it so easy this go around.

Despite our improved secondary, Manning can still abuse them at will if things are clicking. It takes a Herculean effort to stop Manning. It's like knowing you have to par the remaining holes and also get a birdie somewhere along the way...damn hard to do when you know you have to do it.
At will?

We'll see, but if we aren't capable of Herculean effort on defense, I don't know what everybody is brag'n about.

I think Aaron Rogers or Tom Brady are better QB's than Peyton Manning currently. They were already a contender due to the AFCW being completely wide open, adding Manning and him performing well in week one is a great start.

I am very stoked for this one, if our defense continues to pound people it'll be nice to finally have a good shot of giving Manning a pounding on defense for once.

Manning hasn't faced a team coached or coordinated by Phillips since 2005. The Colts are 5-4 with Manning at the helm against a Phillips defense. They played six times from 1998-2000 (splitting the games 3-3). The Colts stomped the Falcons (Manning threw 5 touchdowns) and then beat the Chargers in 2004 before losing in 2005.

Agreed. There was no way we could afford him. We would have to gut the roster and throw away a chance to sign some of our starters to long term deals. Antonio Smith and Owen Daniels likely have to get cut in order to get Peyton. Would we have been able to resign Foster? Maybe, but that means Myers is gone. We would have to go out and get cheap vets to plug in.

Signing Peyton may also mean we likely can't extend Brown or Barwin and potentially won't be able to extend Cush out next year.

So, it comes down to: would we rather have Peyton and Foster or Schaub, Foster, Duane Brown, Myers, Antonio Smith, Barwin, and Cushing. As good as Peyton is, he isn't as good as 5 big time starters.

There is a guy named Wade Phillips. Google him sometime.

I am sure after this weeks game, Manning is going to be looking at film of everything the Texans did last season and what Wade did with the Cowboys. Remember, Manning has never seen our defense. The closest thing he has is when the Colts played the Cowboys. Its a whole new team. The offense is better and the defense is light years better since we last played Manning or the Broncos for that matter.

Our only pitfall will be IF Manning begins reeling off those quick throws and making a string of completions....does the Houston defense buckle under that weight? Do they let out a heavy sigh and say "Crap, here we go AGAIN!" as if we are cursed and cannot even win against the guy.

Do we do that? Or do we stay steady and trust that we can play our game and end up winning at the end of the game?

Because frankly, I think this Houston team has had a cloud hanging over it about how awful we do vs. Manning. That sort of thing can hang like a low, thick fog over their heads.

They have to get momentum quickly and never surrender it. If it becomes a fast, rapid-fire game where you challenge Manning to match us score for score...dude eats that sort of competition up like cereal in the morning. You don't tempt him with that "I'm better than you are!" attitude. You keep him off the field, give him nothing to work with when he's on it, and you better damn sure not settle for FIELD GOALS GARY KUBIAK. I'm just saying....you will kill us if you do. Period. I think the fans feel that a lot more than the team does. Most of the guys on this team weren't around for those years and years of Manning domination. Most of the experienced guys on this team have beaten Manning. Granted, only in Houston, but still. And that was with a team that wasn't as good as this one.

They both managed to field teams full of great players while enjoying the services of the great forehead.

People restructure contracts all the time. Players restructure their contracts to make room for someone like Manning. We've all seen it happen plenty of times. Every year teams manage to somehow take the field with stars making big bucks and many of them are loaded.

I don't believe for one minute that the Texans would have had to tear the team apart to afford him. All I see are people making the decision to let the single greatest QB of his era go to another team more palatable by repeating that we'd never have been able to afford him over and over again.

eh.... well, our pass defense is still weak concerning crossing TEs, HB screens, & passes to receivers out of the backfield in general. That's like Mannings Jabs & that will set the pace for the game.

Knowshon & McGahee.... they could hurt us. Tamme (sp) & Dressen they could hurt us.

The key, is going to be keeping those guys in check, keeping them in front of us, limiting their success, testing Manning's patience. We need to force him to go downfield, before we "have to" commit to the underneath stuff.

Think about how the Skins ran up & down our boys when Frank Bush was calling the shots. TEs & Running backs. Hopefully Wade has a better answer for it than Bush did that day.
