Whitney Mercilus picked for DROY!

Happened to see an article on NFL Draft Geek. They did a Rookie Watch, projecting the Rookie of the year races, and have Whitney Mercilus #1 on the Defensive Side, just ahead of Panthers LB Luke Kuechly. I really think this is going to happen, Wade Phillips is perfect for this guy, and he's going to get a lot of run quickly! Good to see him get some love!

That would be really cool but he better get after it and do it quickly. Panthers LB Luke Kuechly is looking like the stud he was projected as being and has since day one. He'll be getting way more snaps, thus exposure than Mercilus from the git go.

Would be really nice to have another DROY again. Just hope he doesn't win it twice! :)

Unless one of the starters goes down (and we certainly don't want that) I don't see it happening. There are too many guys like Kuechly who are going to be full time players.

I'd go with kuechly or the Melvin ingram. That guy is s stud.

Would LOVE to see merci get it, but I don't think it's likely; especially considering his role.

Well, a lot of the same things were said about Aldon Smith last year. And he really only played about a Third of the snaps for SF last year. Didn't rack up many tackles at all, but obviously the sacks were huge

Dat Nguyen believes Whitney Mercilus is a future All Pro and could become the best OLB in the game within a few years. He speaks very highly of him on sports talk radio in San Antonio. At some point, who can we move inside to ILB -- Barwin or Reed? Just wondering because Whitney is a beast and should be starting at some point.

I'm expecting us to see some looks with Mercilus, Barwin, Reed, and Cush on the field at the same time. I expect Reed to shift inside and Barwin to slide over to SOLB with Mercilus in the WOLB spot. But I expect Wade to move them all around and stack them up to create mismatches.

No way he beats Kuechly out. The Panthers are going to rely on him heavily all season so he's bound to make a ton of plays. Whitney, not so much (hopefully).

I kind of doubt he will be DROY. OLBs need to be 3 down players to be considered for it, like Von Miller last year. I don't think Mercilus will see enough playing time to win it, but he might be in the discussion if he gets 10 sacks.

Barwin was on the radio this morning and he said not to expect much of that. He said they will mostly be in a rotation, not on the field together. fwiw.

That's okay, under the circumstances, I'll be more than happy (way more) with an Aldon Smith-like first season.

Casserley picked Kuechly on NFL Total Access last night, FWIW. Just thought some of you would like to know you have a supporter in your thinking.

I hope Mercilus does win it though I think Kuechly has a better chance at this point in time due to the amount of playing time he will get compared to WM.

By the way, welcome to the board!

Hope you enjoy your time here. There's lots of good folks here and good conversation about our Texans! :texflag:

WM has a chance, but he will need a lot of sacks. The NFL glorifies sack numbers more than tackles. Typically rook MLB win the award simply becuase there isn't a good enough rookie sack machine. WM likely needs about 9+ sacks to have a solid shot.

I thought the same thing, more or less. Barwin "looks" more like a SOLB, than a weakside guy, Mercilus "looks" like a WOLB. Brooks, I thought would look good next to Cushing.

But they brought Bradie James in.... doesn't/didn't make a lot of sense to me. Then I saw Nading taking a few snaps at MO.... so I don't know what Wade is thinking.

Barwin & Reed allows the 3-4 to flip-flop as they can play either side (Even though they both appear to be SOLBs to me) which adds to the unpredictability. Mercilus would be that WOLB in "Wade's system" that rushes the QB on every play.
