Harris was drafted by the Broncos in the third round of the 2007 draft, and he was with the team from 2007-2010 where he started 34 games. He was placed on the injured reserve list in 2009 after dislocating two toes, and Josh McDaniels was very frustrated with his play. Harris made his way back to the starting lineup at the end of the 2010 season, but decided to move on to a different team in free agency.

Harris signed with the Philadelphia Eagles and was supposed to be the starter there until he herniated a disk in his back during a preseason game. After he had surgery (the third of his career) on his back, many believed that he didn’t play with enough athleticism.

That didn’t deter the Broncos from resigning him, however.

During Broncos training camp, Harris rotated in with the second and third team offense and was listed as Orlando Franklin’s backup on the depth chart. Chris Clark was the first tackle off the bench in practice and games, however, and as it turns out, that’s who the Broncos ended up choosing in the end.

Well he has proven he can be a good T in the NFL, I guess the question is whether his back can handle it.

Definitely worth kicking the tyres on.

No. Newton is going to struggle early, it's what most young players do. It is better for him to struggle in the beginning of the season than in the playoffs.

Now, an arrangement like what happened in Brown's rookie season is pretty likely.

That's what I meant I think Harris will see the field more then what People think though Salam was on the field a lot for Brown his rookie yr and Newton is nowhere close to Duane
 
I know a lot more about Ryan Harris than I do about Derek Newton. Excellent pick-up until Newton is fully developed. :specnatz:
 
If you want a look at Harris, he started Denver's last game at RT. It's being replayed on NFLN tonight(tomorrow) at 2:00AM CDT.
 
I read the whole article in the Denver Post that was in this thread, and it sounds like most of the league has basically given up on Harris because they consider him another injury waiting to happen. And the story goes on to say that Harris at this point in his career is basically a RT, so apparently he's not going to be the true swing-tackle we were looking for ?
Oh well, maybe we'll get lucky and Newt will play respectively from Day one, or if we have to call on Harris he'll hold up long enough until the starter he's relieving can get back into the lineup ?
 
Considering we are taking the scraps off of the bone of other people's steak, I think Harris is about as good as we could expect. Good pickup. IIR he was fairly highly regarded early in his career, but it looks like the injury bug has been his nemesis.

I think how much he plays will be up to Newton. I doubt he sees any snaps at all this first week barring major injury (knock on wood) After that, I really just think it's up to Newton. If he plays like he did in the preseason, which was inconsistent at best from this layman's perspective, I could definitely see a platoon situation this year ala Duane Brown's rookie season. Nevertheless, until proven otherwise, RT has taken a major step backwards from the 2011 campaign.

Agreed. The thing I'm worried about is still Caldwell. Haven't been impressed yet. What are they going to do if they realize Newton's struggles are magnified by Caldwell's mental errors?
 
This is not surprising, and he's probably the best we could do considering. I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope he's our saviour on the line however, but if he holds up enough to spell the others now and then, he's worth it.
 
First off Ryan Harris was a premier guard prospect coming out of Notre Dame. If healthy he could be a better option @ RT than Newton beause of his experience & ability to mirror & slide in pass pro, very polished. Both lack ideal size for an NFL tackle but that's OK ZBS. Denver/Houston type player. Never fully developed strength because of injury's, best suited now as reserve tackle, if he can stay healthy & get stronger adequate starter material.

I love Newton as a left guard, not so sure he has the size to develop into elite RT prospect/player? He will start until Ryan can catch-up, depending on play may see some type of rotational plan dictated by play calling/match-ups. I have Tackle as my number one draft priority after this season. I hope Schaub can survive otherwise we are looking a TJ Yates leading the Texans in consecutive playoff appearances.
 
Has he been given and passed his physical this soon? 3 back surgeries is nothing to minimize. The reason that he was available and probably not heavy on the pocket book is the same reason we probably won't have him on the field for too long.

Suppose to take his physical tomorrow. I'm worried about that back of his as well
 
I am glad they addressed the situation. You bring in a guy who knows the zone blocking scheme so he has familiarity with it. This is a good safe pick if you ask me.
I have yet to question Rick Smith and his scout teams yet. They have a done a great job of bringing in guys who can contribute.

That Broncos offense was pretty sick that day. I don't think they had one 3rd down conversion in the 1st half? Maybe allowing 5 or 6 sacks. And I don't think they scored any offensive TD during the entire game. Not sure that I'd be too impressed with anyone's Oline performance that game. The Broncos gave him up for some reason other than they were overloaded with talent at that position.

Most likely vet minimum, and given his injury history, it may be a split contract. So it would only be guaranteed if he plays in X number of games before getting injured. We shall see, but a healthy, experienced RT would be nice.

Sad thing is, I think the Texans could have been well off by cutting Butler instead of Winston. Now it's Butlers 1.3 million salary plus this guys 540k cap hit versus Winston's 4.5 million (Newton at swing T for min). Only a 2.7 mill difference now, and that may go down if Harris doesn't make it through the season or we trade for another RT.

And scouts around the league believe those surgeries have taken their toll, that Harris doesn't play with the athleticism and flexibility in his hips that he did early in his career.

I'm really concerned about bolded as 3 back surgeries is risky in a pick up. There was bound to have been some welding going on the spine. I expect him to have recurring back pain and some neuropathy. I see DEs & OLBs running around him easily. If he is best we can do better hope Brown and Newton remain healthy. I am reconsidering my first round in 2013. And one preseason game is not that impressive just a possible insight as back will get tight and more painful with more plays.

If they cut Butler instead of Winston - back when those cuts had to be made - then that still would have left us with 3.2 mil worth of cuts to make elsewhere. Who would you have given up back then?

They didn't have to do anything to get under the cap because AJ restructured his deal a few days prior to Winston and Lienarts release. I think Myers was signed a couple weeks later too, so his 3-4 million caphit wasn't included either. NFL.com says we had over 4 million free in July: http://m.nfl.com/news/09000d5d82a421db/

All the cap space story was BS to make the fans less angry. So cutting Butler instead would have put us around 800k in space in July, but since he's on IR we have another spot to fill for 540k. That means we would be around 1.34 million in space if we had kept Winston and cut the backup, as opposed to 4mill, minus the new guys cost.

Harris Goes Prime-Time

Harris is also going prime-time on us. "I am going to be on MTV. I did a feature on MTV's "True Life" series. They called me up because they found that I was the lightest offensive lineman to sign and they wanted to follow me working out. It's going to air on August 6th. It was a lot of fun."

The TV star says he has some goals set for him this year. "My goal is to be a Freshman All-American and win the Heisman Trophy. Now, I don't want that to sound like I think I am coming in thinking I'm going to play or start. I just think you need to set your goals as high as they can be and you shoot for them. I don't know if I will even play but I am going to work as hard as anyone who will become an All-American. I just want to contribute in any way I can. I hope to get some minutes playing and I would love to end up being second team or even starting."

Harris has always set his goals high and continues to do that. He has goals set far beyond football. "I will probably major in administration or management. I will probably look into a foriegn language as well but I might also look into Political science."

The political science major is something he has talked about before when discussing his dream to be the U.S. President. "It's still a dream and something I'm very serious about. I'm not kidding in the slightest. I think I could be a great president. I'm seriously going to run for President. I am counting on your vote." If Ryan ever runs, he has my vote.

Ryan Harris is going to be a fan-favorite. He is dead-serious about running for President and he has the ambition and personality to win. I am really going to enjoy following Harris at Notre Dame and in life after football.

By what Week do you feel Ryan Harris will be starting? Have most of us lost confidence in Derek Newton this fast? It's not even Week 1 yet. I'm still hoping Newton can prove he belongs as a starting Right Tackle in this league. Then again I'm trusting Gary Kubiak when he says that. And is it just me or does Derek Newton look and talk exactly like DeMeco Ryans? Take away the long hair of course.
 
We are going to learn very quickly what Newt is made of because a week from today he's gonna be going up against the 'Phins Cameron Wake, who's a big-time pass-rusher. In the meantime the Texans maybe have a plan B they aren't saying too much about if Newt fails, which is moving Wade Smith to RT (he's got a resume which has him with tackle experience when still with the Chiefs), and moving rookie Ben Jones into the lineup to fill Smith's position at LG. If you haven't been paying that much attention to the Georgia rookie you may have missed him playing guard the other night when he was very impressive.

Good post. I remember one of the selling points about Smith when we signed him was that he could be moved around on the line.

The Texans have signed offensive tackle Ryan Harris, a fifth-year veteran who started 34 games with the Denver Broncos.
Harris (6-5, 300) was released by the Broncos on Friday. He was a third-round draft pick out of Notre Dame in 2007, when Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison was Denver's offensive coordinator. Dennison coached Harris for four seasons, during which time Harris played right and left tackle.

The 27-year-old Harris was hampered by a back injury in 2007, shoulder and toe injuries in 2009 and an ankle injury in 2010. He started 16 games in 2008, eight in 2009 and 10 in 2010. He was not on an NFL roster last season until the Broncos signed him on Jan. 2 for the playoffs.

The Texans lost Rashad Butler, their backup left and right tackle, to a season-ending triceps injury in their Aug. 30 preseason finale. Butler had lost a tight competition with second-year pro Derek Newton for the starting right tackle job. Harris joins third-year pro Andrew Gardner as depth behind Newton and left tackle Duane Brown.

With the signing of Harris, the Texans now have reached the NFL limit of 53 players on their active roster. They have one spot open on their practice squad.
