Help Wanted - Nose Tackle - Apply Within

on the lam
With Harris out for the season and Cody out with a lumbar injury the Texans will look for another tackle.

(on if they are looking to bring somebody in since multiple players are out due to injury) “Well, let’s say we’re moving some people around. It’s hard with the CBA rules right now; even if you went out and found somebody, they couldn’t even play on Saturday, the way you have to have the acclimation period, so it doesn’t do you any good. Now, are we having to take a look at ourselves as we move forward, having to play two games in five days? Yes, Rick (Smith) and I have to do that.

Phillips said he can rotate Jamison and Crick at nose tackle behind Mitchell and Fangupo for the Saint's game.

Now (NT Shaun) Cody is obviously out for this game and we’re hoping he gets better, but we’ve got some other guys that can play nose. (DE Tim) Jamison can play nose. Also, even (DE Jared) Crick can play nose. I was pleased with Crick this last week, his first time to play. I thought he did a good job. He’s a good looking player, so we’re glad to have him

I think Harris was the front runner for the third tackle spot.

(on the training camp that NT Sunny Harris had until he got hurt yesterday) “Sunny did well. He did so well that we started working him against the first team, against (Chris) Myers and guys like that. We thought he held up well

I don't think Phillips is sold on Fangupo yet. If he doesn't impress in the next two games he may be headed for the practice squad.

(on if NT Hebron Fangupo will get more playing time) “Lonnie (Fangupo) will get a good look. He’s got some potential. He really hasn’t shown it yet. It’s an opportunity for him.

Right now all the teams rosters are swelled to ninety players. If a player isn't on somebody's roster now, they're probably not very good or they're injured, neither of which would help the Texans roster. Monday is the cut down to seventy-five players and more players will become available, then more still when the final cuts are made next Friday. I don't know if Kubiak/Smith will wait that long.

Some players that are currently available
Shaun Smith
Jonathan Fanene
Anthony Adams

With only 1 preseason game to prove themselves even if someone is picked up today, I would put my money on a "conversion' within our own ranks for opening day play.

I wonder if this quote by Wade has anything to do with the nose situation.

“We’re trying to play our base defense as good as we can play it,” Phillips said. “I like to see if our guy can beat their guy one-on-one (during the preseason). I don’t really think you get a whole lot out of hitting the quarterback in the back with a cornerback and then say he played good. He didn’t do anything, if nobody picks him up.

“We’ll be scheming stuff during the regular season, but right now I’d rather see one-on-one coverage, one-on-one pass rush, one-on-one against the run, how you come off blocks, those kinds of things. Our base stuff has to be good enough to hold up against anything, and you’ve got to believe in what you’re doing.”

I'm pretty sure we can get this guy cheap through free agency..

Well, to be a nose-tackle, you have to actually tackle that guy, not be that guy. It's a snotty job.

Dear Mr. Smith,

I saw your ad on Craigslist for the position Nose Tackle for the Houston Texans and, I have to say, I am very interested. I've always wanted to play professional football and I think I can bring a fantastic skill set to the Texans! Ok, so maybe I am only 5'6 and 125lbs, but I hear you are pretty desperate since your DTs are dropping like flies this preseason. I've attached my resume for your review:

C Madd
Austin, TX

Football Experience

4th String Corner
Junior Varsity Football - (1 year)

- Once had 2 tackles in 1 game
- Did not miss a single practice

Skills

Yeah, so I don't have a lot of experience, but I've watched a few hundred football games on TV so I'm practically a veteran. Because I am currently not injured, I think I would be a good fit for your team.

Regards,

C Madd

It has been said that part of Holliday's advantage is his small size and defensive guys can not find him on the field. Why not play him at Nose? He can slide between the center and OG like Johnson's baby oil on a waterbed mattress. He may not be strong enough to tackle a QB but could scare one into dropping the ball "Eeek! Where did that midget come from?"

Dear Mr. McNair,

Unlike C Madd, I am a big, bruising 172 lbs. :cjeremy635:
Plus, I was the best RB in the league on my 8th grade B team!!!

...and played CB (actually, flanker) in the 5th grade on a team that made the playoffs! I got a sack in the play-off game too (although I blitzed the CB when I wasn't s'posed to just cause I wanted too--spun 'im around by his face-mask too and got a rather large penalty--oops! I thought I'd grabbed the top of his shoulder pads under the neck).

If I try real hard, I might be able to take up one whole linemen for like a second (OK, one whole arm of a linemen for like a second).

I am also currently uninjured and, if you don't make me practice or play preseason games, I will likely be healthy the start of the Miami game!

I COULD REALLY USE THE MONEY.

Thanx.

Mr McNair forget these lightweights , Im 230lbs .... I'll work for booze (top shelf only). I'd need it after getting flattened by those behemoth 320lb guys along the OL now days.

I have all of you beat haha! I am 6'3" and 315.:kingkong:

OK, well, let me know when you need an old, out-of-breath CB. :kitten:

While I may not have the qualifications of all these guys I do come with my own retirement plan, my own health insurance and I did stay at the Holiday Inn Express last night.
