What can I expect with Peyton

I went to UT Knoxville, so I've always liked Peyton Manning; however, now that he is in my favored AFCW I've noticed how much the press is abuzz about him, and how they don't see his loss of velocity in his throws. Anyway, since most here are Texans' fans, I thought I'd ask if it was always like this? I mean, you guys/gals have been rooting for a team that had to play Peyton twice a year, so I was wondering if you felt like the media believed Peyton walked on water? Is this a new thing, or is it old and I didn't notice it so much because he was in a different division than I followed. I realized he got a lot of press like Brady, but it seems the media only wants to recognize the good in Manning without considering that he may be damaged goods from here on out. Has it always been this way?

Incredibly so. The fact that Manning and the Colts won the division for so long all you would here about is Colts this and Colts that. It was very sickening to me to see that over and over again like there wasn't 3 other teams in the division...

Hard to say really. For all we know he'll be just as good. What people keep discounting is that Manning had his worst season two years ago and that the Colts only won the division, because the Texans were so bad. Manning struggled a lot that season, and not many people gave them a chance going into that post season that year.

Tebow led that Broncos team to the playoffs last season though and beat the Steelers. When you consider that, this Broncos team could make a lot of noise in a bad division. It's easily one of the worst if not THE WORST. I think the biggest question surrounding Manning will be how he takes hits behind an Oline that isn't that great.

I don't know where you get that idea. I recently read a Bucky Brooks article about the AFCW being the most competitive, there were some laughs about that, but as I pointed out to people most competitive doesn't mean the best. The AFCW was one of four divisions with only one team under .500, and that team (the Chiefs) were the best of the last place teams in ANY division with their 7-9 record.

Now, when I look around for lesser divisions than the AFCW, I look at those with several weak teams. For instance, the NFCW with only the Niners as a good team, and the Cardinals, Seahawks and Rams, as also rans. Heck, take a look at the AFCS and you have the Texans clearly on top, then the three weak sisters in the Jags, Titans and Colts.

Now I will agree with you that last year the AFCW had the weakest division champ at 8-8, but it was also the most competitive division in football followed by the NFCE. Which by the way had the second "worst" division champs in the 9-7 NY Giants; who then went on to win the SB.

As for Manning, I guess I'll have to get used to hearing about him ad nauseum whether he is good or not this season. Either a bunch of "I told you so" comments coming our way, or a lot of excuses.

Peyton has always deserved the press he has received. He is the best QB I have ever watched over an extended period of time. You should expect him to get very positive press, as I would argue that most people feel he is top 3 in QBs they have watched in their lifetime.

I was watching clips NBC was showing of Manning's recent preseason game, game 2...his passes are not as "there" as they used to be.

There's smoke, and there'll be a lot more smoke in the air once he's having to squeeze out 16 games and finding out his arm is not there anymore.

The Texans didn't get serious on trying to land Manning. I think John Elway was so ready to be rid of Tebow, that old Johnny Horse Face rationalized some things and made The Forehead their savior QB. I think he's not going to last long.

Peyton is good, and before the injury, he's one of the best of today's pitch & catch NFL. But top three...? I wouldn't put him above guys like Marino, Montana, Unitas, Dan Fouts, Roger Staubach, Jim Kelly, Joe Willie Namath....

I often wonder what sort of numbers those guys could put up in today's NFL....

Peyton didn't look like Peyton in either of these first two pre-season games. It looks to me like he's trying to make throws that he used to make and he doesn't have the velocity to get the ball there as quickly as he used to. That's setting up up for some interceptions when he tries to sneak the ball into holes he used to be able to sneak them into.

BUT.

After listening to some of the commentary, I've been afraid I was the only person seeing that.

I hate the guy...unless he was my QB. Peyton does walk on water. Injury recovery is your concern. Dynamic leader, takes team on shoulders and finds a way to win. His brain and vision comes ahead of his arm strength.

He's the MVP of the regular season and the Lebron James of the postseason.

This. I think he'll be the new Brett Favre for NFLN. He won't quit the game. The game will eventually take him out. So, until then, expect lots of media about Manning, deserved or not.

I'm just glad he's out of our division. I just hope the Texans D stomps him in week 3...you know, just for old time's sake.

I didn't watch Namath, Staubach, Fouts, or Unitas so I couldn't tell you. Based on what I have gathered, he should be ranked more highly than all those listed except maybe Marino, Unitas, and Montana. It's all opinion though, as all of these types of conversations are. He is the best I have ever seen, with only Brady being in the same conversation. I didn't see enough of Montana to have him more highly ranked.

Nice to interact on a non-political issue!

I actually pray for Manning. I'm afraid that with his 4 neck surgeries that one really bad hit could hinder the quality of life for the rest of his life. Obviously I hope this won't happen because, (despite him owning the Texans in the first nine years), he's been a great QB and by all counts a quality person!!!

Then again, I hope Texans @ Denver the defense has 17 sacks against him!

I feel the same way. I don't like how he whines to refs for calls but otherwise he is a great QB. I hope he isn't stringing it out too long and risking serious health issues. As much as I love seeing Texans sack him I would hate to see him carted off a field in a neck brace.
