Jets thinking about using Tim Tebow on kickoffs

I can't figure out if the Jets are making a joke out of Tebow.......or if Tebow is making a joke out of the Jets..........

July 24, 2012, 12:29 PM EDT

Another day, another potential role for Tim Tebow with the Jets.

We already know that the team intends to use Tebow as the personal protector on the punt team and in a package of offensive plays designed to take advantage of his running ability. He might also be the team’s quarterback in the red zone, which could mean that he leads the team to scores before covering the ensuing kickoff.

That’s the word from Jets assistant special teams coach Ben Kotwica, who told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that the team is considering using Tebow on their kickoff coverage team. Kotwica said that he’s not concerned about Tebow’s speed getting down the field or about his ability to make a tackle when he gets down there.

“When he’s in coverage, he’ll be looking to tackle the returner,” Kotwica said. “And from what I’ve seen, I’ve got a pretty high degree of confidence that he would be able to do that.”

Tebow holds while Tebow kicks. Tebow caught the ball and returned it 17 yards before fumbling after being hit by Tebow. Tebow recovered the fumble and lateraled the ball to Tebow, who ran it in for the touchdown.

Should probably just go into Madden 2013 and edit all the Jets' players' names to Tim Tebow. That would be a funny game to play.

The Jets are going to be a circus this season. I just hope we beat the ever livin crap out of them

This is just stupid. I get they want to get the most out of him, but he's their backup QB. I have a good feeling all of this is going to backfire big time leading to Rexy getting fired after the season.

This would have been a great year for "Hard Knocks" to have followed the Jets.:texflag:

I think Tebow's first start this season will be against us on MNF. Don't know how it's gonna get there, but it should be hilarious to watch progress.

Does anyone want to hazard a guess as to why the NYJets traded for Tebow?

Do you really think he was brought in to push Sanchez?

Do you think it was a good decision or a bad decision?

I honestly don't know what to think of it. It doesn't make sense to me.

I like it...

Don't try to fit the guy into some ideological box. He is what he is and what he isn't is a down in down out QB.

I'd use Tebow all over the place and take advantage of the things he's good at. The guy is just a football player. Let him do a little bit of everything.

If he's good at it and either not likely to get injured, or possibly not so valuable as a QB (just throwing this in to be technically correct), then I don't have any problem with it.

I still have not watched or paid any attention to the Tebow circus, so it's easy for me to ignore all of that and not be either a drooling fan or a hater of the whole "God is making me good at fooball" thing.

I agree with this, that he's a footbAll player & a winner. They should take advantage of what be is good at and limit the things he is not good at & let's face it, he is not good at throwing the footbAll or reading defenses or orchestrating an NFL offense.

I'd make him an H-back & let him redefine the position.

If he wasn't brought in to be a backup QB then I could understand that. Putting him on kickoff will not happen. I can almost guarantee u that. No way Rex will risk him getting hurt running down the field to tackle someone.

I like the idea of him playing in the red zone and even some specialty packages, but to have players trying to tee off on him on a regular basis on kickoffs is plain stupid to me. There isn't anything anyone could say to convince me otherwise. Now if Rex were to say that he'll be the 3rd QB on the team and the kid from Alabama is going to be second string I might listen. But they've made it clear he's their backup. We should know of all teams how important it is to have a good, healthy backup QB.

By the time we play the Jets, he could be their starter.

None of this makes any sense, except that Tebow was brought in solely as a gimmick to sell tickets. I don't see this show ending up in a good way for either the Jets or Tebow. All the Jets need now to compliment Tebow is a dancing bear..........at least, the bear would be expected to have an established talent.:texflag:

I don't see it that way.

As much flak that Rex gets, he knows football. He is a hard nosed guy and I'm positive he appreciates good football players.

Tebow is a gifted athlete and I think Rex is going to use him in a way that fires his team up and helps them be more productive on the fields.

I think it's going to be fun to watch.

Tebow has not yet proven that he is a real football player at any position at the NFL level. Speculation of him as an RB, H-back, WR would be just that. Can he run with the ball? If he is a QB that decides to run, he is approached and attacked from a very different perspective. If he is placed at RB or H-back, he will be attacked directly as such and will lose much of the advantage he may have enjoyed keeping people guessing what he might do behind the LOS. I'm not willing to extropolate just yet that he will demonstrate any more success at other positions than he enjoyed at QB. But, I'm sure we'll get a chance to see. Either way, people tend to enjoy watching a good train wreck.

I'm with you. I found myself watching him every week that he played last season and kept waiting for the bottom to fall out....and it never really happened.

He got shut down by the Patriots, but every QB has a team out there that's got his number.

Sanchez isn't much more than a pretty face. No one really respects his leadership skills or his QB abilities. Dude's just gutless. I think that they should open up the QB position for camp and let the chips fall where they may.

I'll go on record as a Tebow fan when he's on the field (and not playing the Texans.) When he's on the camera...notsomuch.

If Tebow ever runs down the field on kickoff in a regular season game this year I will delete my TT account and never return. That's how confident I am that this will never happen.

What he said.

In addition this whole "he is a football player" thing is overblown. He has shown some unusual things from the QB position (as well as some poor things from that position). Putting him on kick coverage is idiotic. There are plenty of 3rd string LBs and Ss just as athletic as him. You pay someone like Brahman league minimum to cover kicks not your backup QB making $2.5 mil. Total publicity stunt to have him out there.

let tebow play some Linebacker and OLB has well why not LOL can u picture tebow pass rushing tom brady LOL

then catching a few balls has a FB/TE hybrid :P

I like watching him play. When it comes down to it, that's what it's all about. My entertainment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Jensen_(wide_receiver)

Jim Jensen is a former wide receiver, running back, tight end and quarterback who played for the Miami Dolphins from 1981 to 1992.

He was reportedly nicknamed "Crash" by Howard Cosell. As a rookie Jensen, a quarterback, was on the kickoff team and obviously caught Cosells eye to be tagged Crash Jensen.

Jensen wore jersey # 11 because he entered the league as a quarterback. After Marino was selected in the 1983 NFL Draft, it became evident that Jensen would need to find another way to survive on the Dolphins roster.

He became a human Swiss army knife, with a knack for making tackles on punt and kickoff coverages and converting third down opportunities as a running back or wide receiver in the offensive set with Marino.

He was named the Dolphins special teams MVP in 1988.

Jim was also the 1988 NFL Special teams player of the year.

You ever notice how no one refers to Aaron Rodgers as a football player? Or Brady, or Brees, or Stafford, etc? I guess those guys are playing a different game. ;)

Sounds like you guys just don't like Tebow or the jets for some reason.

Casey has been called "a football player" and I've never seen you guys complain about that label.

Casey hasn't shown sustained success at any position in the NFL, but ive seen him used in different ways here.

I think you're pretty much stating the obvious. Of course you don't know how it'll work until you do it.

Well, that's a pretty ignorant post.

As a matter of fact you were one of the main ones saying danieal manning would be ok returning kicks. Now it's not ok to have a guy who is a back up covering kicks?

Well I guess your boy kubiak is an idiot because sage used to cover kicks here and I don't think he was anywhere near the athlete Tebow is. And then Kubiak's added an extra sprinkle of idiot because he did it with only two qb's in the roster.

Part of the reason you'd put him on kick offs and why you wouldn't just stick some third stringer back there is because 1) he might be better at it or at least just as good 2) you want to find a way to get passionate leaders on the field

It fires the team up and Rex is an emotional guy that likes to tug on those strings.

Casey has been called "a football player" and I've never seen you guys complain about that label.

Well, I have, though not on this board. IMO, Casey should be put at TE and left the hell alone. But if he isn't good enough to man the position and has to make his way by filling in different spots and being a utility guy, then fine. The key differences are that Casey is not a QB being described as a football player and Casey was not a 1st round draft pick. The bottom line - the description "football player", when used as it has been for Tebow and others, is an excuse for not being good enough to man one position better than the competition. Maybe the player can do some good things still, but they're not good enough to be one of the top couple guys at that position on their team. In Casey's case, he wasn't good enough to beat out Owen Daniels or Joel Dreessen (or wasn't given a chance, perhaps). Guys like that don't get taken in the first round and then talked about in the media until we're all sick of them. Few NFL fans outside of Houston know who James Casey is.

It's just the label?

What if the jets intended to use him as a utility guy all along?
Who cares what he's listed on the depth chart as....and really, where he was drafted? That's pretty meaningless as well seeing as he's not even with the team that drafted him.

And also, there have been plenty of qb's that have been described as "football players". Not sure why you guys see that as a negative term as it's usually meant to say that they are versatile and could play different positions. Lots of great players and hall of famers have been called football players or athletes. That term doesn't mean they weren't good at one position.

The reason you don't see those terms regarding Brady or Rodgers ect, is because they can't play anything other than qb.

Well since you decided to go there I would say your position is the ignorant one.

Manning is a proven kick returner. I wouldn't have said anything if they were going to have Tebow return kicks or punts - at least he has some proven running ability. The idea Tebow is better than someone like Brahman at tackling is ridiculous. The idea Tebow's leadership on kick return coverage will make any difference is ignorant.

What is clear is you have some sort of hero worship over some perceived aura around Tebow that his mere presence on the field is going to make the kickoff coverage team better.

WTF are you talking about Sage being on kick off coverage? Never saw it and if he was you just proved how idiotic the idea is since he has 1 career tackle in 12 years and Brahman had 8 special teams tackles last year.

Comparisons to Casey are misplaced. Coaches have put players in mixed FB/TE roles for a long time.

Anybody remember Bucky Richardson playing special teams for the Oilers? I do.

Yeah for 1 or 2 years when he was 3rd string. Wasn't Richardson a pick in a round that no longer exists?

Danny White used to punt for the Cowboys. But that is pretty low risk and gave a huge flexibility

Back in the late 80's, the NFL teams were allowed to carry only 45 players on their rosters. Out of necessity players were used in different capacities. Heck, today with 53/55 man rosters, teams including the Texans are still expecting ST play from sometimes even their starters because of "precious" limited available spots for depth. Jensen (chosen as an 11th rounder QB) was never stuck on being a NFL QB. From the beginning, he asked to be put anywhere the Phins had room for him to play. Tebow is not going to turn out to be a Jensen.........it takes more than hype (1st round pick talent, right). :spin:

No, and no. From a strictly football standpoint, I think it's foolish to draft a utility guy in the first round. That's where you get your blue chippers. If a team is dumb enough to waste a first round pick on a guy like that, then they should rightly be ridiculed, and the man in charge of that pick should probably be fired. That is what happened in Denver, so everything went as I would have predicted in that case.

As for the label - no, it's not just the label. The label is one of those things that gets slapped on a player who isn't good enough to play any position well enough to hold it down. You can play it off all you want, but it's true. We all know that Andre Johnson is a football player, and a damn great one at that. If he had been asked in 2003 to switch to cornerback, or play special teams, or fill multiple roles, he would have done well at it. Yet no one says "That AJ is just a football player". No, they say he's the best WR in the game.

The most important aspect to all of this, however, is perception. The media turns everything Tebow into this huge deal when the guy is just not a good QB. Everyone wants him to be a good QB so badly that they play it to the max in the media and people get tired of having their TVs, computer screens, magazines, and newspapers full of stories about a guy who isn't even that good. I'd rather read about good football players. To be clear, that's not Tebow's fault, and I don't dislike the guy. I dislike the coverage and pervasiveness of the topic. His play has not warranted the coverage that he receives. Worse than that, for him to make his way in the league as a guy that has to develop and perhaps play a utility role, the coverage does not serve him well.

So he's a less talented, overhyped product of the media that should never have been drafted in the first round that the Broncos wanted nothing to do with once they got rid of the genius that drafted him. Yet we have to constantly read about him, see him on TV, and hear about him on the radio. Can't we just talk about actual good football players?

Sounds like you guys just don't like Tebow or the jets for some reason.

I'll tell you right now, I don't like anything about him, and every time I hear anything about him it makes me wanna puke.

Same thing for Footie and the stinkin' Jets.

Like being a quarterback that doesn't know how to throw a football?? :spin:

No offense, but no one forced anybody to come in this thread.

I only go into threads and discuss stuff that I actually find interesting and worth discussing. I don't have any issues with Tebow and don't care about him either way. I just thought it was interesting to see the possible role he'll be playing with the jets.

The Jets gave up a fourth and sixth for Tebow and a seventh.
Basically, Tebow is an early 4th rounder for the Jets.
The money they had to compensate the Broncos should be paid for by the sale of merchandise, publicity, etc.

The plus that they get is the NFL experience that Tebow recently acquired.

As a 4th round "draft prospect", you normally expect a back-up QB.

If they use him in goal-line or short yardage situation, or as an H-back or a TE in a few of their regular set, they already gain some value for "the pick".

This ST talk may very well be just to generate more talks and controversies; something that is quite normal for New York.

Even if it's for real, they "are thinking" of using him as the Personal Protector, which is the guy standing the closest to the punter.
Only when the other team decide to go after the punter that this PP has to block, and normally he would block a small/speedy guy.

Besides, the PP is the QB of the punt team.

"The personal protector on the punt team is actually the quarterback of our entire punt operation out there on the field. Just as it is for the quarterback on offense, it is his job to call the play and make sure all 11 men are headed in the right direction."

[URL="http://www.bucpower.com/feature-puntprotector.html[/URL]

By having Tebow doing this at OTA, the Jets also seem to say that "No, he's not God" and "there's no QB controversy".

The money they had to compensate the Broncos should be paid for by the sale of merchandise, publicity, etc.

Money from jerseys is split among the teams. Not sure what you mean by publicity money which would be earned by the Jets. In any event none of that makes injury less of a concern.

Even if it's for real, they "are thinking" of using him as the Personal Protector, which is the guy standing the closest to the punter.

No, re-read the original post. They intend to use him in the PP role but they are considering having him on kick coverage.

Yeah, those guys are Quarterbacks.

I've got no illusions about Tebow being a QB. I'm just hoping someone has the gnads & the stroke to convince Tebow otherwise. I think he can be a very good player in the NFL. He looks like a TE to me.

Imagine, a TE with QB experience.

So if Tebow had been drafted in the first as a utility guy then it'd be ok?

It's just the label?

Where was Harvin drafted? I don't think of him as a WR. He's more of a "football player"

Very talented, very versatile, very smart. Kinda like Casey.

I guess it then may come to be that crafty Rex has finally found a way to allow Sanchez and Tebow to co-exist in a symbiotic relationship.................Tebow the Punt Protector.....Sanchez the Punt Producer.............:kitten:

1st round. He had 87 receptions for just under 1000 yds last year and you don't think of him as a WR?

That's the way I took it. Then the haterade started flowing from the heavens.....

That's the way I took it. Then the haterade started flowing from the heavens.....

OK if you are going to make this kind of allegation then spell it out. So if y'all think this is a gimmick to stave off any QB controversy talk it is cool but if others think it is a gimmick and poor football decision meant for attention then it is haterade? I am not seeing posts saying Tebow sucks. To the contrary most of what I am seeing are posts saying this is a potentially stupid coaching decision.

1st round. He had 87 receptions for just under 1000 yds last year and you don't think of him as a WR?

Yeah, you get the ball into his hands and he does the rest. Many of those catches were probably WR screens. Practically every play he's involved in makes the highlight reels because they're like punt returns.

Now before you go spend a lot of time researching every one of Harvin's catches, I'm not saying that is fact. I don't watch all of the Vikings games. But from my recollection, if I saw Harvin in a highlight or a game I happen to be watching, that's what I saw. He was either returning a punt or kickoff for a big play, or he caught a short pass that he turned into a big gain. Or he ran a reverse for a big gain.

I remember highlights from college, when he was lined up like a running back, H-back, or whatever. Very versatile guy. More than a WR.
