WR Josh Gordon - Baylor in Supplemental Draft

TexanCR

Practice Squad
So this guy is going for the supplemental draft, I heard some reports that he was a 1st/2nd rounder after his sophmore year and now he is mentioned in the 3rd round.

Since we are going to have at least 2 3rds (1 compensation pick for Mario) do you guys think we can go for this guy since we already have a spot open (Dwight Jones) ?

His numbers are not bad on the yards and TDs category, his receptions are not mind blowing but he seems like a good option.

"He had 42 receptions for 714 yards (17.0 per catch) and seven touchdowns in 2010, and has been clocked in the low 4.3-second range while at Baylor."

This 6’3″, 220-pound receiver.

The question here, is there a better WR prospect in the 3rd round next year than Gordon? If not, then we should at least consider it.

Are you referring to Josh Gordon? Try to provide a link in the future.

From Adam Caplan of thesidelineview.com

Former Baylor WR Josh Gordon will enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, an NFL source confirmed.
Gordon (6-4, 225), who did not play last season after transferring to Utah, is known in scouting circles for his prototype size and athletic ability. Gordon had to sit out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. He was suspended by Baylor for the 2011 season due to violation of team rules.
In his last season at Baylor, Gordon posted 42 receptions for 714 yards (17.0 average) with 7 touchdowns. He’s also capable of returning kicks.

Gordon, who has been clocked in the 40-yard dash at Baylor as low as the 4.3’s, could go as high as the first half of the Supplemental Draft based on his upside and play making ability.

The Supplemental Draft is scheduled to take place on July 12, but the NFL has yet to confirm the date or whether there will actually be a Supplemental Draft. However, some player agents and NFL executives have been told the draft will take place on July 12, according to multiple sources.
I doubt that the Texans would spend a 3rd round pick on a player who has only one full year of experience (Gordon hardly played his freshman year). However, they should have picks in the 5th and/or 6th round for losing Allen, Brisiel, and Dreessen. The date of the draft is near, so they would need to workout and interview Gordon soon. I have to wonder what the suspension at Baylor involved. With 2 rookie WRs and a UDFA who has never played a regular season down (Lestar Jean) likely to make the team, it's unlikely the Texans would spend a future pick at the position.

"A source with knowledge of multiple teams' thinking tells Profootballtalk.com that Supplemental Draft prospect WR Josh Gordon has generated a third-round grade from at least one NFC team.
The source added that high-ranking people at Baylor believed Gordon was a superior prospect to Titans first-round pick Kendall Wright during both receivers' time in Waco. Gordon managed just 43 receptions in college, but averaged 17 yards per catch in his lone full year at Baylor. Teams are "enamored" with his size and speed, and he looks destined for the early rounds of Thursday's draft"

Some enlightening information from a Phins site:

NFL Supplemental Draft: Josh Gordon, WR, Baylor
Jul 4th, 2012 at 10:30 pm
by Richard Santamaria

The 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft will take place in a week, on Thursday July 12th. Josh Gordon is creating some buzz because he is a big (6’4″ 225) receiver with 4.3 speed. He played two years at Baylor, recording 42 receptions for 714 yards and 7 touchdowns during his sophomore year, which included a school-record 94-yard haul. Sometime in July 2011, Baylor Coach Art Briles suspended Gordon indefinitely and he transferred to Utah. Gordon will never play a down for the Utes as he made himself eligible for the supplemental draft. The red flags are everywhere.

On October 3, 2010, Gordon and teammate Willie Jefferson were arrested and charged with Misdemeanor Marijuana Possession. They fell asleep while waiting in a Taco Bell drive-through line. The police responded sometime after 2AM and found marijuana in the driver-side floorboard and the central console of the vehicle that Jefferson was driving. Hours earlier, on October 2nd, Baylor had defeated Kansas at home, 55-7. A few weeks later, Jefferson was arrested again for a marijuana offense and Briles dismissed him from the team. It seems the Baylor coach has a strict two-strike policy.

Less than a year after his arrest, Gordon received his suspension. The reason for the suspension was kept a secret but rumors are that it was marijuana related. There was no publicized arrest so it may have only been a violation observed by someone affiliated to the school or football team.

Time to bring out the rubber stamp and mark Gordon, SELFISH and UNDISCIPLINED. Selfish because he did not consider how his actions would affect his team. Forget leadership. Undisciplined because he knew he could potentially be kicked off the team for a violation but exhibited no self-control. Gordon will also not honor his commitment to Utah. Why not make an attempt to change your image and improve your draft stock? Maybe he’s just not that good and his agent saw an opportunity in a weak supplementary class.

Gordon had Oakland Raider written all over him but Al Davis has passed. He would have likely been a third-round selection like Terrell Pryor, the year before.

Many talented players have had success despite being selfish and undisciplined. Allen Iverson comes to mind, “We talkin’ bout practice.” The operative word is talent and it takes a lot to overcome character flaws.
Now, we get to the Miami Dolphins. A team that appears to have a WR need. I say appears because we don’t really know what B.J. Cunningham, Rishard Matthews, and Chad Johnson are bringing to the table. Gordon may be worth a shot in the late rounds (6-7) but someone will reach for him because of his electrifying speed.

Seven others players are eligible for the Supplemental Draft. They are:

Ed Wesley, RB, Texas Christian
Quaylon Ewing, DB, Boise State
Adam Harris, RB, Syracuse
Adrian Haughton, OT, Iowa State
Larry Lumpkin, LB, Carson-Newman
Montez Robinson, DE, Georgia
Houston Tuminello, WR, McMurray

Gordon is easily the cream of this class. Wesley is a longshot. Don’t expect

Here are some interesting facts:

Since 1977, the year of the first supplemental draft, only 41 players have been drafted this way.

Cris Carter was drafted in the 4th round of the 1987 supplemental draft by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Bernie Kosar was drafted in the 1st round of the 1985 supplemental draft by the Cleveland Browns.

I know what you’re thinking. What are Carson-Newman and McMurray?
EDIT: Found this statement by Bears Coach Briles sort of humorous and "prophetic."

"I have no idea right now," Briles said at a Big 12 media days appearance last month, when asked if he'd be getting Gordon back in the 2011 season. "You all are a lot smarter than I am. Somebody can give you the definition of 'indefinitely.' I think it might mean this afternoon. It might mean 10 years from now. I don't know. I know we're going to move forward, we're going to play, and we're going to be good."

We already did Dwight Jones this year. I think 1 diva tryout a year is enough.

Y'all, it takes a lot of weed to pass out before you get your munchies. I'd like to say weed doesn't have the same negative effects on driving as alcohol but there's always one !d!ot to screw it up for the rest of us.

I'd put up a 6th to get this guy, but that's about it. I think a WR needy team like like Cleveland, Miami, Minnesota or Seattle will snag this guy for a 3rd. Sounds like a waste though. Size does not equal quality.

There's no way we'd invest a high supplemental pick on a guy who's as iffy as this guy right now. We just used a 3rd and a 4th for 2 receivers in this year's draft. Plus, you have AJ, Walter, and Jean. Assuming we only carry 5 receivers then that would mean you'd have to try to stash 1 pretty high to mid-round pick on the practice squad. Just seems like you're risking throwing a pick away.

Too many question marks on team now. I'd rather watch for another season and choose.
Likewise.

I perhaps should be more concerned about our receiving corps than I am but I think they'll do all right. It may take a few games for them to gel and get the timing spot on but I do believe there's receiving talent on the roster right now with a vet sure to be added during TC.

I would pick him in the 4th rd.

Guys that are 6'4 220 and run 4.4 dont grow on trees.

We're talking about AJ measurable here.

Gordon was said to be a better talent than Kendall Wright. But there's no way BoB,Rick and Gary take this guy.

Gordon seem like a 3rd rd pick for Jerrah and the Cowgirls.

We don't need use a high pick on a undisciplined pothead and we don't need that kind of stuff in the locker room either.

If he falls to the 5th or 6th I'd take him but nothing higher than that.

Josh Gordon is bigger, faster, stronger than former Baylor teammate Kendall Wright. As far as supplemental drafts go, he is a rare talent.

Receiver needy teams that figure to be interested in Josh Gordon: Browns, Dolphins, Panthers, Colts, Eagles, Cowboys, Redskins and more.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Josh Gordon is expected to be timed in the 40-yard dash in the 4.4s or better. He could go as high as 2nd round.

Former Baylor WR Josh Gordon, who declared for Thursday's supplemental draft, is scheduled to hold his Pro Day on Tues. at Texans facility.

Well, we spent a third rounder on an iffy WR project too... and with less measurables than this guy.

People are putting a round 2 tag on this guy, we need a good number 2 that can stretch the field, also big and strong that can help us in the blocking game.

If you see pictures of Posey he just looks thin and weak, agile maybe but this guy already looks like a way better project...and dont tell me that he was absecent a whole year and was suspended from his team, sounds familiar?

Apples and peaches I guess (drugs and selling rings) either way I dont care if the guy is not squeaky clean as long as he can help. Plus a young player with huge potential that will come cheap.

Like a previous poster said, players with those measurables dont grown on tress.

Having said that there is 0% chances that Rick will use a second on this guy (even if he had 10 second rounders), is not his MO to take risks, thats why we are stuck with Walter as number 2 for another season and probably more.

You know what they say, if it sounds too good to be true...

Top supplemental draft prospect Josh Gordon conducted an individual Pro Day workout at the Houston Texans’ indoor facility on Tuesday morning. Per Adam Caplan, most NFL teams in attendance sent two personnel evaluators – in most instances their college scouting director and one area scout.

The Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, and Dallas Cowboys were among the teams confirmed to have attended. Obviously, there were Texans officials on hand, too. In all, 21 teams showed up.

Caplan reports that Gordon ran a 4.52 forty-yard dash after measuring in at 6-foot-3 1/8 and 224 pounds. Gordon recorded a 36-inch vertical leap with a 10-foot, 1-inch broad jump. He did 13 reps on the bench.

While the forty time isn’t quite as good as the pre-Pro Day hype might have suggested, it’s still very fast for a human being who weighs over 220 pounds. Gordon is big, and he can run.

This year’s supplemental draft will go down on Thursday.

Here you may find some explanation about it:

"While 4.52 is below Gordon's highest reported 40 times, Tony Pauline of TFYDraftInsider reports that the prospect pulled a quadriceps muscle during the run. But he still finished the drills, and Caplan reports that he did not drop a pass."

Also, interesting to see...

"He also reported that the Browns, Eagles, Cowboys, Bears, Seahawks, Chiefs, Colts, 49ers, Redskins, Bills, Texans, Patriots, Vikings and Saints were among the 21 teams in attendance."

Considering that it was in the Texans own backyard I'm not sure that it's very interesting. We let him workout for other teams in our facility so its only natural that we'd have representation there.

Some of you may not be aware of it, but Jacoby ran a 4.50 at the Combine. The problem was that during his career with the Texans, he always took "straight ahead" as meaning any direction he was facing at the time.:kitten:

So he ran a "low-4.5s" forty time BEFORE his injury.

Supplemental draft prospect Josh Gordon wrapped up an impressive individual Pro Day showing on Tuesday, running a forty time in the low-4.5s at 6-foot-3, 220 pounds and some change. It didn’t end without a little bit of a scare, though.

Tony Pauline of SI.com and TFY Draft Insider reported that Gordon pulled his quadricep muscle on his second forty-yard dash attempt. According to Rob Rang of CBS Sports, the injury was specifically to Gordon’s left thigh, so he only ended up running the forty once.

Gordon did finish the workout, though, confirming that the injury isn’t a concern. Citing a league source, Rang reported that Gordon exhibited some stiffness during post-forty route-running drills, but “caught the ball cleanly” throughout the workout and demonstrated the ability to secure passes over his shoulder.

Adam Caplan has a few more details. Gordon measured in with an incredibly large 82-inch wingspan, and ten-inch hands. As passed along before, he’s 6-foot-3 1/8-inch tall and 224 pounds. Particularly for an NFL wide receiver prospect, Gordon is a big boy.

Per Caplan, the Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, and Washington Redskins were among the teams in attendance, in addition to the five clubs mentioned previously.

UPDATE: The Oakland Raiders were also there.

I know thta you like him.

I pulled his Soph game tapes and I saw a very raw player.
He was just one of the guys - among his peers in the same class and a Freshman.

RG III wasn't all that great (he missed a few chances to really give Gordon his fair chance deep.

However, all and all, Gordon was extremely raw.

The extent of his routes were as followed:
A few quick slant.
A lot of bubble screena with decemt to good blockings by his teamates and/or the overall not up-to-par defensive scheme and/or personnel.
Quick hitch or stop and go near the sideline. For the most part, defenses were not concerned with him.
The only deep vertical route I saw him run was the go route.
There were a couple of instances I would have like to see RG III delivering a better ball; however, Gordon didn't really burn any single coverage, nor did he adjust to a poor throw.

He wasn't anything like Stephen Hill.

And then there were a few dropped balls, fumble after the catch, etc.

I don't want to talk down the guy, but overall, he played smaller than his frame (as opposed to Wright or Blackmon).

He's not clumsy by any mean, but he was no play-maker.

People who complains about any receiver in this draft about route running should never even mention about Gordon.

He's just too raw (and it seems he didn't even know that.)

Gordon is a better version of Jacoby.

He's big, fast but has much better hands than Jacoby (He has bigger hands than Jacoby) Jacoby's problems are 1. He has small hands 2. He's scared of getting hit.

Gordon has neither of these problems. He cant run a full route tree right now, Jacoby cant either. LOL Gordon may have run a 4.5 but his game speed is in the 4.4's with pads on. Pads dont slow him down is my point.

Gordon is a project, but with his size speed and athletic ability he's a wothwhile investment. But He will go before the Texans 3rd rd pick in the supp draft. So if the Texans want Gordon they will have to use a 2nd rd pick. I could see Gordon going to the Fins, Browns,Cowgirls in the 3rd rd.

In the interviews I've heard Gordon seems like an intelligent guy. So the leaning curve in the NFL shouldn't be to big for him. I'm not sure I would spend a 2nd on Gordon if I were the Texans. With all of the young WR's already on the roster.

The Browns believe he can get his life together and become a WR1 in the NFL.

Cleveland spending a top 40 pick (Likely) means they think Gordon can be a star in a couple of yrs.

Josh Gordon “more than shocked” after second-round selection
Posted by Mike Florio on July 12, 2012, 8:48 PM EDT

When quarterback Tim Tebow joined the Jets, the word of the day was “excited.” For receiver Josh Gordon’s NFL arrival in Cleveland, the magic word is “shocked.”

“I was more than shocked for sure,” Gordon told FOX 26 Sports in Houston after being picked in the second round of the 2012 supplemental draft. “I definitely didn’t think that high, but I’m thankful for the opportunity. . . . I’m definitely in shock. It still probably hasn’t hit me yet.”

The former Baylor receiver perhaps shouldn’t be shocked. His agent, Jeff Nalley, thinks Gordon could have gone even higher, if he had played in 2011.

“Josh, in any other circumstances, is a first-round pick,” Nalley told FOX 26 Sports. “We talked to so many teams, did so much leg work with so many teams and they did their homework.

“What they found out was he’s a really good guy and he’s also a tremendous player. Every team that I talked to, they spoke to his ex-coaches. They spoke to his teammates from Baylor and not one had anything bad to say about him. It was good to see that come out during this process. I’m just excited for the kid.”

Still, Gordon was in the supplemental draft for a reason — and the reason is that he ended up leaving Baylor after being indefinitely suspended by the team in 2011 following a failed drug test.

Gordon’s former quarterback at Baylor, Robert Griffin III, offered a candid assessment of Gordon before the supplemental draft. “He’s been a kid that’s been in a bunch of unfortunate situations, and he knows that he was the reason that those [situations] happened,” Griffin told Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports. “So I think any team that gets him, of course they’re gonna feel like they’re rolling the dice on the kid. I think that in the end, he’ll be successful if he wants to be successful. That’s all on him. And he knows that. He knows he’s used up all his chances and everybody’s watching him.”

The fact that the Browns rolled the dice by giving up a second-round pick in 2013 suggests that team president Mike Holmgren wants to get the situation in Cleveland turned around sooner rather than later. In fewer than three months, they’ve added four players on offense via the first two rounds of the draft: running back Trent Richardson, quarterback Brandon Weeden, tackle Mitchell Schwartz, and Gordon.

It won’t be easy to get Gordon up to speed for his rookie season, given that he didn’t play in 2011 and that he wasn’t involved in the offseason program. Then again, those same circumstances applied in 2011 to second-round receiver Greg Little, who didn’t play football in 2010 and (like every other rookie) wasn’t involved in the offseason program.

Still, a perennially bad team can become a consistent contender by making only a handful of great moves, and the Browns are at least giving their fans reason to hope that the corner finally is being turned.

I'll feel bad for Browns fans as well. When the draft comes around next year, it's looking like a deep one, they're really going to regret this pick. Of course this pick is good for us and all other teams in the NFL, that's one more quality player in the 2nd round that will fall just a little lower.

What are the strong positions? If evrybody comes out early QB seems really strong.

I'll agree with you about the 2013 WR's list doesn't look as good as this years was but this year was exceptionally deep at WR. It's very early for evaluations but it appears to me next years draft looks to be deep at QB, CB, OT, 3-4 OLB; good at DT, NT, 3-4 DE, Safety, ILB, and OG/C; average at WR; but poor at TE. I haven't really looked at the RB/FB yet since it's not a need of ours, and these are just early observations. Overall I'd say the 2013 draft should have some pretty good talent down into at least the 3rd round depending on position and we should come away from it with at least 4 good starters/potential starters as long as we get that 3rd round comp. pick.
