TE for the future

FYI- anyone else has noticed there is a tremendous young TE at the U of Miami named Greg Olsen? while he is not draft eligible this year keep a close eye on him, a good place to start would be this coming Saturday when they play VT and Marcus Vick. Maybe the Texans could save a TE slot for him the following year, give Bennie, Rivers and Murphy another year to produce, then if not pull the strings to get this kid, he really impressed me last Saturday, excellent routes, hands, speed & blocking all over the field actually alot like Winslow Jr.

I've heard a lot about him. He is reportedly supposed to be better than Shockey or Winslow. I don't know how much I believe that, but even if he is around their level that is impressive. I still like Leonard Pope from Georgia. He is a giant.

I have seen him, that guy looks great. Being a Longhorn fan I still love David Thomas, but Olsen is money. Love to see him with the Texans

I've seen Leonard Pope a couple times and I was impressed but he is more of a one dimensional- offensive weapon, which is fine the Texans could certainly use plenty of those, but I was looking more for a complete TE who exacutes blocking assignments, is able to improvise anyway he can to help develop a play especially when its a broken play, a TE who can stay back & provide blocking and protection for the QB, as well as seperate in the open spaces and move the chains.

At 6-7 Leonard does provide an impressive target but his legs seem long and his upper body disproportionate to his lower body, makes him look like he is Lurching. someone will probably make him a 2nd rd pick, however if he slips into the 3rd rd. the Texans will have two high picks and I would not have a problem using one of those here on Pope.

Why wouldn't Olsen be draft eligible in '06? I don't expect him to come out early but he'd be eligible if he decided to do so.

I'm guessing he didn't realize that Olsen started out at Notre Dame, and then after transferring to Miami had to sit for a year.

I wouldn't believe much of that. He's decent, has nice hands, but being better than Shockey is out of his range.

no I did not know that, I guess the future is now! this is the type of player that it would be worth trading up into the 1st rd. all kiding aside I don't think he is ready yet, so it does'nt even matter if he is eligible because it would be in his best interest to stay at Miami at least one more year, two years and he will be a top 5 pick:cool:

We could use another TE depending on what coaches and offensive system we have next year. If we have this coaching staff or a similar one, we don't need to draft a TE because this system calls for big, blocking TEs like Breuner and Murphy. If we change to a system where we look to throw more to TEs, we would need to evaluate whether Rivers will be able to adapt and be successful in that system and if not look to draft someone like Pope or Olsen. This is one of those positions that depend entirely on the coaching system we have next year as to whether we should spend a draft pick on or not.
