Davis, now 34, told Nelson of the friendships he developed with Jevon Kearse, Samari Rolle and Eddie George in Tennessee more than a decade ago, but he kept his secret in a league that has never had an openly gay player. He told of a moment with the Titans in 2000, when another player was "perceived to be different," and was warned not to do something that could lead to not making the roster. Confronted by that reality, Davis kept quiet, spending thousands at strip clubs to fool his teammates.

"You just want to be one of the guys, and you don't want to lose that sense of family," Davis told OutSports.com. "Your biggest fear is that you'll lose that camaraderie and family. I think about how close I was with Jevon and Samari. It's not like they'd like me less, it's that they have to protect their own brand."

The only Davis I could remember from those days would be WR Willie Davis.

Nevermind...just read the link. Wade Davis? Don't even remember that guy at all.
 
I actually think its a huge problem in sports that doesn't get confronted. People should be able to express who they are no matter what their job is.

That a guy who never made the roster comes out as being gay makes the news is quite a sad state of affairs really, it highlights the problem. They say 1 in 10 people are gay, so by the averages the openning day rosters of the NFL feature ~160 gay players. Its the same across all sports too, anybody interested in seeing the devastation being an openly gay sportsman can bring just look into the Justin Fashanu story, truly tragic.

One of the modern greats of Welsh rugby, Gareth Thomas was the only openly gay professional sportsman as recently as 2010, a few more have 'come out' since but it really does require a big attitude change from the organisations, governing bodies, fans, and athletes themselves, including the gay ones who are afraid to come out.

I've got plenty of gay mates, they can count on some seriously harsh banter about it from time to time, but they all know its not a problem for me, its a lot harder when you have to play a sport in front of the terraces week in week out though.

You know how people are. If a star NFL player (or any other sport) came out while active you know he would be made fun of, especially by opposing fans. I don't think this guy ever made it into the regular season and it's news as you say. Also sports are a very "macho" thing and that is probably why woman haven't had the same issue. Many woman athletes have been open about being gay and don't have the same stigma as a male athlete would have.

The new word for that is "beard".

I tend to act as though it's a sin to throw away a book and when I return home I will see if I still have The Season which was written years ago by a former standout's ex wife . I seem to recall the mention of someone on the team was gay. IIRC the issue has been around a long time. If not it will still be a good reread to compare the then and now.
 
Wonder how his family either knew from the beginning or in shock like the rest of the NFL world about his orientation.:wadepalm:
