Texans Chick presents a concise review of the state of our STs. Some interesting comments about Holliday and K. Martin. Be sure to watch the K. Martin return VIDEO. Pretty impressive, but I sure hope he learns to stop swinging the loaf around as much as he did in college.

I didnt read Stephs blog but will say this............. One hundred times out of one hundred, I'll take a guy like JJ Moses over Jacoby..... JJ wasn't really a threat to take it to the house, BUT he never made a mistake!!!!!!!!!! Pick your poison!!!

That's exactly why I used to argue for him. He had a high average. I cared much more about that and his catch the ball in the air instead of against his body method than his not taking the whole way. What you do on 70 kicks is more important than on 1 (unless the one is a spectacular screw up).

If Marciano has some regulars to call upon, our ST should be quite good. As the roster gets better, deeper the players who make up his team get more experienced. This is another area that I look to for a better results. I imagine that many of the national talking heads know little about just how good Marciano can be. I would like to see Manning eliminated from that duty. Too good to risk.

I had to look at my post to see what you were talkingabout. I typed Manning...er no I didn't. Thanks Nate! I'll edit.:mcnugget:

It's all good, and yeah I'd hate to see Manning go down but he is a very competent returner, and safety depth isn't too much of a concern.

first reports of hartmann say hes serving 4 games, and got the bmore game counted as 1 so he'll only miss 3 weeks this season. new reports say his suspension has been reduced to 3 games but is still missing
3 weeks this season.. which is it? did they reduce his suspension and not count the baltimore game, or was there actually no reduction, and people are forgetting about the playoff game..

The reduction to three games makes far more sense, and I believe that's what happened.

Hartmann was on injured reserve during the playoffs, and therefore, not eligible to play under any circumstances. It simply makes zero sense to count a game which a player is ineligible to participate in against a multiple game suspension.

I know that was the original story, but it didn't make sense at the time, and doesn't make sense now (particularly with a very plausible alternative having been presented).

Its harder to make a roster spot this year then ever before. The overall team talent should be better and that should translate to special teams----ASSUMING the kickers and return men are compotent.

I prefer boring ST's to interesting ST's. Middle of the pack on ST's and top 10 scoring O & D makes me a happy camper and should translate into W's and playoff apprearances.

YUP. If I need to go to the bathroom or do whatever during the game itself I always opt to do it during a st play. Very little exciting about it and lets keep it that way.

That's because for the past couple of years, they have been something less than stellar. Having a good STs can be positively exiting.

Not me. I'd love to have a Dante Hall or Devin Hester type threat that scares the bejeezus out of the opposition. AND gives us great field position - like maybe starting drives on their side of the 50!

See that is the thing which always killed me. JJ Moses consistently gave us great field position but people wanted 1 or 2 home runs a year. I'd rather have the league's highest average and no return TD's.

That's a great big no-brainer!!! :mcnugget: :D
There's a reason Hester will probably be the 1st return specialist in the NFLHOF. No one elese like him has ever came around. Hall was a very good returner, but not in Hester's league. Regardless, players with those rare abilities are hard to come by and I'd rather not eat up a roster spot on a return specialist. A good returner will bust a few good ones each year. They might not take it to the house, but they won't let you down in the clutch, either.

Starting field position...Advanced Football Stats says since 2000 for every 3 yards closer to their opponent's end zone, a team will add 2 wins on average - http://www.advancednflstats.com/2011/12/how-important-is-opponent-starting.html

2011 regular season drive stats from Football Outsiders - http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/drivestats

Better teams =better overall talent = better special teams players= better field position.

Dont think it has much to do with an additional 3 yards. Thats a cool stat regardless.
