Robertson's Future?

Maybe one of you Coogs can help, I haven't heard anything in maybe a year. Lindsay swears they are fully funded and have plans but I can't find anything online?

This upcoming season will the last at Robertson Stadium as we know it. It will be demolished for the most part and a new shiny 40,000+ (expandable to 50K) will be built at the same location. I'm not sure but we will probably go through one season having to play at an alternate location.

I have not heard that but surely, this work can not be completed in the off-season.

This will be the last year there at least on the UH site they have a Last Year at Robertson logo so that makes me believe this is how its going to play out. UH will play their home games either at Rice Stadium or Reliant in 2013.

I'm not sure about the stadium being destroyed, I was under the impression that UH was going to renovate the stadium and improve the seats and add parts like UT did (e.g. ramp to get to the top floors, suite boxes, etc).

What I do know as a student was that the voting was very controversial and supposedly their was an "overwhelmingly" majority of students who supported the bill to have the stadium upgraded (which will jack up tuition even more).

There's a lot of construction going on at UH, starting with the completion of Robertson Stadium Garage. It started operation earlier this month, with capacity of 2,300.

There are light rail tracks being laid right now that will eventually connect the Minute Maid Park/Dynamo Stadium to Robertson (along Scott Street - which is actually on the West side of Robertson - and turn at Wheeler - which is the South side of Robertson) and then at MLK going toward McGregor Park.
It's due to complete in mid 2014.

In the mean time, the University Center is being demolished and will be reconstructed in two phases.
The first phase is projected to complete in Dec 2013, with occupation starting in early 2014.
Phase II is slashed to be completed in Dec 2014.

The current stadium will be demolished this coming December.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in mid 2014.

An RFQ (Request for Qualification) was issued by the University on January 9, 2012. The RFQ includes:

40,000-seat capacity, expandable to 60,000 in the future in 10,000-seat increments (phase two would be 50,000 seats, phase three would be 60,000 seats).
Premium seats (suites, club, loge, etc.) would be about 4,000.
A club lounge that would have view of the field, the downtown skyline and premium food and beverage amenities would be approximately 12,000 square feet.
Individual suites would be about 274 square feet apiece.
The Cougars’ locker room would be around 8,500 square feet and would include toilets, showers, separate coaches accommodations, training, treatment and exam facilities and equipment and manager space.
A 20,000 square-foot multi-purpose academic center.
The press box (which would include a visiting athletic director’s suite) would be above the main suite level.
The entire square footage for the stadium (including field, seating and concourses) would be 450,000 square feet.

Update: UH spokesperson Shawn Lindsay tells Hair Balls the approved plan is a $105 million project, and the project "will break ground immediately following the 2012 football season."

In what was the largest turnout in school history, University of Houston students overwhelmingly voted for an increase in the student service fee to help fund the construction of a football stadium and renovation of Hofheinz Pavilion, the school announced Thursday morning.

The UH Student Government Association put a $45 per-semester, per-student fee increase to a student referendum, and it passed by a wide margin as 73.9 percent of the voting body approved the increase. A record 9,923 students hit the polls Tuesday and Wednesday...

Yep, I heard about that. But, like the SGA elections, several students (I'm talking hundreds) complained of voter fraud. In any case, I think the school would have ultimately passed the bill whether students agreed or not.

If they can field a decent team that can hang with the "big boys" and compete in BCS bowls, than I will consider it worth it. Other than that, a complete waste of money.

With the money they spend on athletics and the stadium, they could have used it to make the campus look nicer instead of a bunch of buildings thrown together.
