Texans sign PK Shayne Graham

That's a decent pick-up. He's had some quality seasons in the league, and should provide a stiff challenge to the kid from A&M.

This was already talked about in the Bulluck draft thread.

I think this is a good pickup. We need some sort of competition for that spot.

So if Shayne Graham wins the job what happens to Bullock? Do we carry 2 kickers? Do we cut him? Practice squad him? If we practice squad him is he exposed to being picked up by someone else?

That's a really good question. I like the competition aspect out of it because we'll have some good camp competitions, but its dangerous if Graham out-performs him during the preseason.

I don't see us carrying two kickers and I'm not sure how having a kicker on the PS is beneficial.

My guess is that in the event that Grahm does beat him out, Bullock is just cut...

If that happens then it's not a huge deal...He was a 5th round pick...Now if we had taken him in the 3rd like the Jags did then it would kind of suck...:spin:

But my guess is that Bullock ends up getting the job.

May the best man win!! We're talking about a POSSIBLE SB run this year, so experience would definitely be a PLUS!! JMO. Our ST needs to be GREAT to make up for the unknowns we have with our O. They say D's win SB's, but, a good kicker might be the one to put those winning points on the board, IF we have O problems like we did last year. When it's all said and done, it's the score at the end of the game that matters! Kickers put a lot of points on the board! Just ask Brionas. (SP)

Will be fun to watch um duke it out in TC!! Can't wait til July!!

I want the best possible K. Drafted, FA, UDFA...don't care. EARN your position.

I am pretty sure Bullock makes the team regardless of if Graham out-performs him.

This is about making Bullock challenge himself during camp and preseason...an added form of incentive to make sure he takes everything 100% seriously and does his very best at all times.

Without a challenger, he can mentally "check out" all the way to reg season opener. But having another foot trying to beat him out? It makes him focus like a laser beam all throughout camp and preseason.

Oh. And he's from A&M, by the way. :fingergun:

Bullock is a shoe-in for the spot unless Graham just blows everyone away. Smithiak just loves competition, and rightfully so.

I think you're right for the most part.

I think bullock would need to really suck or Grahm would have to be much better.

I don't see either of those happening so my guess is bullock makes it. I think Grahm was also brought in to almost tutor him or show him the ropes. He's a vet kicker that's been around and he can share some stuff with the youngster.

Yep. He could fall apart, so it's good to have a backup plan in Graham.

Last year's freaky Maynard-Hartmann situation spooked me big time. Nobody here agreed with Kubiak cutting Hartmann in favor of Maynard...then Maynard has an atrocious final preseason game and Kubiak cuts Maynard and brings back Hartmann. Never did understand his reasoning for cutting the wrong guy the first time around.

I hope he doesn't get cute on the K situation. All indications point to Bullock being the nails out there on the field.

Graham's been solid his entire career though. I doubt he came here to be a mentor. I think he has a decent shot of beating the kid for the position.

If I'm Grahm and I want a real shot of making an opening day roster I'd go somewhere that didn't just spend a draft pick on a kicker.

I'm pretty sure Rick whispered sweet nothings in his ear and of course showed him the money.

I'm not saying that he came here to be a mentor. I'm saying that may be part of the reason the texans brought him in.

Graham has about as good of a chance of getting the job as Kris Brown did when we signed Rackers. It's Bullocks job to lose at this point.

I'd rather have signed Longwell. More of a veteran presence to learn from.

Hopefully Bullock rises to the challenge.

It is said that he is accurate. But no one has ever accused him of having a strong leg.

Those of you that feel that Graham would have it over Bullock because being a vet and money "under fire," need to remember why the Bengals finally decided to let him go.

For Cincinnati Bengals, It's Time to Part Ways With Shayne Graham

His stints since the Bengals don't have the numbers to be statistically significant enough to make any dogmatic statements about his present potential.

I would think the idea that this squad is projected to win the AFC South again and could be in line for a deeper run in the playoffs is weighing on Rick and Gary.

There's likely to be some close games this year. You've got to wonder if this is more than a camp smoke screen for Bullock outright and think that maybe they are considering going with a veteran kicker.

I think Bullock gets the job, but Smithiack wants to make sure he knows that his new job isn't his unless he produces. Graham is insurance only, and as we all know, insurance is a good thing in the NFL.

Hartmann turned into a decent punter during the season but from what I remember, he wasn't exactly killing it before getting cut.

Camps are about competition. Graham has a job, that is to act as a bar for Bullock to jump over.

Doesn't sound like too much competition. Bullock is going to be the kicker next season and many more to follow.

Good 5th round choice.

I'm thinking the Texans may see Hartmann as a valuable player. I'm assuming that since he hasn't been given an injury settlment and told to take a hike they still think he could be a member of the team.

Looking at his stats last year, he was decent. Just randomly looking at other punters it appears that they tend to get better with experience. Still a young guy, is a pretty good kick off specialist as well.

I hope he sticks around unless they just find someone flat out better.

Likewise, I'm sure. Kid was getting better as the season progress. I tend to agree with you train of thought Rey. If they were gonna cut the crop, they'd have done it already. They haven't been bashful to this point, I don't see them being tentative in regards to a punter/kicker.
