The bridge between stupid and useless is short.
Earlier this week coach Dom capers was quoted as saying we have a ten game season. He has no idea how wrong he is. The Texans have a 10 game head start on our off season and a jump on the competition. Why you ask? Because as we all know capers is already a lame duck coach. Theres only one reason hes still here; bob mcnair desperately wants to avoid a place in the history of football as 0-16. Oddly enough capers first win could get him the boot faster. The upheaval of a coaching change mid season hurts our chances to win right now more then a makeshift interim staff. Thats why it hasn't happened yet.
Consider this- in the next 2-3 weeks mcnair will be finished evaluating casserly with his outside consultants. This may in fact have already happened as evidenced by people like Charlie Weiss receiving calls from an unnamed NFL team. Expect to hear more from this unnamed NFL team about a potential coaching position. Of course were making calls---capers sealed his fate on 10-16 (in front of a national audience mind you.)
If casserly has retained his position David Carr will be benched in the very near future. This will be in an effort to reduce the abuse he gets and salvage his talent. Capers has had his opportunity with Carr and failed miserably. Carr has regressed...why continue to expose him to the abuse of an incompetent coaching staff and a lost season? Carr retools, commits his film time to reading defenses, and just maybe he secretly gets another playbook to look over before the end of the season...oddly enough, benching Carr shows him the commitment the front office has in him. Go figure. (I'd even speculate a mysterious illness overtakes him before the end of the season...)
Mcnair and casserly have done under the table deals before. Tony boselli was drafted #1 in our expansion draft to insure both walker and Payne were made available to us. Carr's contract was done even before he was drafted. Drew Henson was never supposed to end up in the NFL but somehow we made it happen and pulled one over on those other 31 teams. And now, the Texan's newest coach will secretly be given final authority on our off season on 12-19 after our upcoming Arizona cardinals debacle. Why that game you ask? Because in 8 more games capers should get that 1 win----and likely that alone. In late December College teams are on a Christmas break. In late December the playoff picture in the NFL is almost final and the writing is on the door for numerous coaches. In late December we still have that cushion for our newest coach to decide on things like Carr's contract. In late December we still have a head start in the assistant coaching hunt.
Of course all of this speculation is assuming ( A) casserly is retained AND ( B) a coaching candidate is willing to commit that early.

Casserly will be retained for 1 of 2 reasons:
McNair blames the coaching staff or
Mcnair can maintain that cohesion with a GM he's known for years now and still effect dramatic change by establishing new job descriptions. Casserly loses certain personnel authorities to the new coach while still being the asset he's been in other ways (as a cap manager for instance).
1 more season with a new coaching staff gives mcnair the chance to really evaluate how much casserly is to blame for where we are now. 1 more season gives mcnair an opportunity at more and better GM candidates. a longer timeline means a less dramatic impact on people employed by the Texans who are outside the on-field operations.
A calculated dismissal of capers and a slow weaning of casserly (as necessary) truly are the best solutions in my opinion. We have an immediate change on the field and mild consequences off of it.
But don't let me get bogged down with just 1 assumption (lol). Theres more to discuss...
(B) (Why would a coaching candidate commit in December?)
We have lots to offer our newest coach:
-Generous and unmeddeling owner who's displayed an unbelievable amount of patience this season.
-Great stadium.
-State of the art facilities.
-Respectable city (not the lure of a calli or Florida location but certainly not the bottom of the heap.)
-An eager fan base as long as the product on the field is worthwhile...(how many games have been blacked out? merchandise revenue even for a bad team?)
-No income tax (a good coach knows that can be a key asset in recruiting free agents.)
-a chance to make history with a team that doesn't have one.
-Contrary to our current product on the field we do have some core talent.... YOUNG core talent. I think everyone throughout the league realizes this team is far more talented then our record indicates. As a young team sound leadership and team concept instilled by a good coach would garner a far more competitive product. WE ARE A TEAM POISED FOR A REBOUND YEAR WITH THE RIGHT COACH.
-We currently have a good cap scenario which also aides a new coach in a quick turn around.
-To expand on our cap situation we even have the flexibility right now to jettison Carr if the new regime feels he isn't the long term answer.
-We have an extra 3rd round pick and we will surely have a top 3 pick so the new regime has a chance to get a great young player that fits their system in the regime's first off season.
-And finally, this coaching job is already vacant---IT JUST HASN'T BEEN FORMALLY ANNOUNCED. There are only 32 teams and 32 coaching jobs. There may only be 3 to 4 teams that make those kind of changes this year. If we call a coach about a vacant spot for him he has no guarantee hell be called again. Why wager on a firing that may or may not happen with another team? This IS the perfect opportunity.
