Andre Johnson's longevity

Just curious how posters look at how much longer AJ will be able to play. It is often mentioned that Texans need to start looking for his replacement. IMO most receivesr need two years to hit full strife in the NFL. I don't see a WR in this draft at any of our picks that could lead to an eventual replacement. I think Streeter could if he maxes out. I think we can address WR2 and love Fleener as either a WR or TE. We could perhaps also pick up a slot as I did in my individual mock but a replacement will probably come in a later year.

Your thoughts?

It's going to be hard to find another "Andre Johnson", those players are rare... However there are plenty of WRs in this draft that can develop into #1 WRs and we need to grab one pronto... THIS YEAR.

I remember posting on this board during Andre's first couple of seasons and the discussion then was how Bradford was not the receiver that we need to have paired with a young stud like Andre Johnson.. and how we need to find a vet who could teach him the ropes. I remember when the Raiders cut ties with Rice in '04 there were a LOT of people who wanted to bring him on board just for that reason..

Well now we have that type of receiver and we need to find his student... he tried to take Jacoby under his wing, but Jacoby isn't the student or technician that he was or needs. If we don't get a young buck to mold under him, we're simply wasting the opportunity of having a young talented receiver to learn tricks of the trade from one of the best.

It's time that Andre Johnson becomes our Marvin Harrison to our Reggie Wayne (and no, I don't think Wayne would be the player that he became if it wasn't for Harrison)....and Harrison was 28 when the Colts drafted Wayne... Johnson will be 31 this summer. It pains me to say this, but since you asked the question, I think even if Johnson stays healthy, he only has about 2 more elite seasons left in him, then he'll begging to tail off as just a productive receiver. Which make the urgency that much greater to great a blue chip prospect THIS YEAR. Like Harrison was to Wayne... Johnson needs to be able to SHOW him how it's done and how to be great, not just be here to tell him about what he used to be able to do.

Getting somebody here under Andre, who has 1st round talent and a elite shot at becoming a franchise WR is LONG overdue and it has to be done THIS YEAR. It's one of the biggest disservices the team has done over the last few seasons to be quite honest. We simply cannot afford to continue to sit on our hands and wait for a later year. I remember Andre saying that he thought about retirement when he was battling through his injury situation. Andre is not the type of guy who's going to stick around to chase numbers and I think he's the type of guy who'll simply quietly hang up the cleats at a moments notice as soon as he thinks he doesn't have it anymore. Because of that reason, I think his remaining career might be a lot shorter than others might think. He just seems like that kind of cat who once he thinks he's "losing it" he's done and will walk away. We need to get another #1 type of receiver in here...and if we pick the right guy, it might actually extend Andre's career.

TL;DR version: Draft a receiver.

It is also important to select a guy who will be a student; too many WRs are prima donnas and will not listen to anyone.

Well that just further proves my point.. It's best to draft a receiver (the pima donna position) when you have a guy who commands as much respect league wide as Andre Johnson does on the roster. Loud mouth receivers like Chad Johnson have even given him props and nobody is going to challenge what the man has to say. Having a receiver like Andre Johnson on the roster means you can draft the most flamboyant receiver in the draft and that player will still know where he sits in the pecking order and he'll still think twice about challenging the guy. Andre = respect. Everybody has learned before, it's always the quiet guys that you don't want to piss off or mess with.. :) Innegan certainly learned that lesson

Agreed although imo only 2 WRs could be there at #26 that could be #1 quickly; Wright and perhaps Hill.

What was too long about that post? (which was filled with more than "draft a receiver") Has this country really become that lazy where they can't even read 5 simple paragraphs. Sad

I was a member of generation x, your generation should be called generation acronym or generation "too lazy to type out thoughts or read" Oh well, maybe that's just a by product of having these smart phones. I'm really starting to think Mike Judge was a freaking prophet with his unheralded "Idiocracy" film.

Yes, that one forum poster is an excellent gauge of the entire country's laziness.

Read the rest of that post... (granted, I'm stuck out in the boonies and my edits are hit and miss... connection sucks out here)

You must be a member of that generation seeing how you took offense to what I said. Thanks for responding though. :fingergun:

Lol, I didn't take offense, you give yourself too much credit if you think that. However, I did point out the logical fallacy of your complaint. Feel free to keep tossing out idiotic generalizations, I'll be happy to shoot them down.

Actually you did take offense to what I said...which is the reason why you felt compelled to put your two sense in and respond in the first place.. And no, you didn't point out any "logical fallacy in my complaint" either.

I simply called one guy lazy for not spelling out what he meant to say and I'll easily call you lazy for doing as such.. Guess what, "puller of other man's meat", that will make you lazy as well. keep pulling.

You missed it. Let me help you out...

1) I think the end of Andre's playing days are closer than any of us would like to think,

2) This year's WR class is a 2nd round class. None can touch an AJ Green or even a Julio Jones, according to every scout/player personnel guy I've asked.

3) I have no information on Andre Johnson's wiener. ( I did hear VY hopes to locker-up with AJ & his wiener, but that's another topic. )

1) I think the end of Andre's playing days are closer than any of us would like to think,
I think he hit the apex of his career in 2010 and he's on the downside now and
the concern has got to be (a) how rapidly do his raw athletic talents decline from this point on and (b) how much playing time will he miss because of injuries ?

If he can get and stay relatively healthy, he'll be on the field for a very long time. He's always going to be big, tough, and very hard working. Speed and health are the concerns, though.

Really? When are you going to start?

Could be that the Texans think WR in the first round. I would hope that they start planning and stockpiling WRs for the day AJ is done, which could be sooner than we're ready for.

Everybody seems to think LB or OL will be the route to go in the 1st, but when was the last time we drafted a WR in the 1st? AJ? Granted, he was considered the prime WR in that draft...but still, you get the point.

But the big problem is this: There has to be a WR there at #26 worthy of the pick.

Yes, that one forum poster is an excellent gauge of the entire country's laziness.

DR & others, the poster is 21 yrs old. He KNOWS EVERYTHING ALREADY. Perhaps we've got it all wrong in going into depth and detail to express our thoughts when it's obvious that all thoughts and expressions can be executed with two to four letters, tops.

After all, what could all of us old farts know? Uh-Oh, used WAY too many keystrokes here, sorry. :kitten:

I think everyone is panicking just bc he had a bad run of injuries.. i think if he fully recovers this summer and off season he will be fine or have less problems next season. Fans also have to think that hes a work horse and a pretty physical receiver so i think that comes with his type of play. look at michael irving or TO at that age, had injuries missed some time but were still productive for a long time.. but that being said we still need a receiver if not rd 1 at least rd 2

He might lose some speed from that injury last year and them not re-attaching the tendon or whatever, but I cannot put a fork in his career by any means. He's had some misfortune with the injuries the past couple of years but I think he can still have 4 or 5 more productive years easily. He looked great in the playoffs and seemed to be back to his old self, too bad TJ just had to throw his way even when he wasn't open.

But yes we should draft a WR early. Andre has NEVER had a legit #2 receiver by his side, which makes what he's accomplished so far even more impressive. It would definitely make the transition easier and hopefully take some of the load off of Andre so his career can last even longer.

Look, you can call his post whatever you want, but to expand it to 'everyone in his generation is lazy' is idiotic. Isn't the rule 'Attack the post, not the generation?'

Also, I never said anything against making long posts.

I hope we can find our future Andre Johnson soon.....I dont know how many years he has left but we need to get somebody that can be his apprentice and learn from Master Johnson about the ways of the force......

There was nothing too long about the post as I read the entirety of it. Just making a joke... Take it easy before you making sweeping generalizations about 'my generation'.

THIS COUNTRY IS GOING DOWN THE TUBES I TELLS YA!

Aj, Foster, and Shaub are this team's window of opportunity. Collectively it should be 2-3 years. Unless we start adding marque offensive talent now we're going to hit a speed bump with their decline.

Think Hines Ward with AJ's career. He may be solid/productive for another 5-6 years, but at some point sooner he'll stop being explosive. When he stops dramatically effecting a defense /defensive game plan, he'll have lost value.

Who else on this roster is going 2 challenge a defense deep and force a safety to cheat? I dont see it.

So that's your hang up? You think I developed that opinion just off of one stupid post on the internet or believe that I actually think everyone in that generation is lazy. Only a moron would think that... or someone who just wants to be confrontational. Since the original post wasn't even directed at you, I'm going to guess you fall under the latter. I guess if I post on the same board as you, I now have to be politically correct with everything I say and type things like "the majority of that generation...but not everybody" huh.

Housportswriter's thread about his hard work and drive to overcome his limitations is a testament that not every one of our youth are morons, sadly though there are not enough like him coming up.

I could go into my **ssification of America rant or how I feel like the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality that we have developed in this country has robbed the generation coming up of the feeling of competition, and has developed a bunch of lazy individuals who feel entitled to success or other things that should be earned through actual hard work and initiative. However I won't do that here, because that belongs in another forum.

You see you don't develop a opinion that strong through one post on the internet... but I believe you already knew that, you just felt like showing your ass. Now if you don't mind, I would really like to get back to the topic of this thread.. it's a good discussion.

You know, outside the all-important world of Sports, young people today are much less entitled and much more disciplined than any previous generation. School is much harder than it used to be. And admissions requirements at every college are much harder than they used to be. Not to mention the much greater difficulty to get into post-graduate work (i.e. PHD, Law, Medicine).

Floating through college for a liberal arts degree does not guarantee success anymore. Kids are going through school now with the understanding that if they don't bust their ass making good grades or networking, they will be jobless.

Folks let's get back on topic. If you want to discuss this v. that generation then take it to the No Spin Zone.

Thank you. I had decided to back out of my own thread. We have 3 skill postions in which the starter is aging, QB, WR1 and starting TE. WR has virtually nothing behind the starter. I think TJ has shown enough to keep us in a game even if he might not be ready to take us to the playoffs again. We coasted in this year and might not have that luxury. Coby Fleener might/U] be the guy who can eventually replace OD and also good enough to get some quality snaps at WR. It would be interesting to watch Kubiak game plan this. Especially if we can also draft a WR2 or even a productive slot.

We should ALWAYS be looking to "reload". Every year.
This year (or the next at the latest) the head-shed should be on the lookout for both A.J.'s and Schaub's replacements. They should also be looking for someone to replace Antonio Smith and Brian Cushing. Who knows which guys will look to stay here or do a "Mario" and test the open market when they become free agents.

Andre is getting pretty old, but might hold up longer than people think. He doesn't seem like a guy that's involved in tons of other ventures, so I think he'll focus hard on football.

We definitely need help at WR and a replacement, but only if we find what looks to be a steal in the first round there like when Dallas had Bryant late in the first.

We should. Yet a cursory look of skill position players added by this team leaves a lot to be desired. Ben Tate 2nd round, Jacoby Jones 3. I'd even be willing to listen to the argument that Ahman Green was an attempt at getting a "big name" skill position player.

Shaub was more of a known commodity when we traded for him then a draft pick.
Kubiak inherited Andre Johnson.

Truth is, we dont take many chances early on skill position players. Kubiak's m.o. is to rely on scheme for offensive success.

To me that drafting pattern had a LOT to do with how used to play in this division and also where Kubiak's strengths lie.

We always were victims of Peyton and his team was ALWAYS the hump that we were trying to get over. Also I think Kubiak being a offensive minded head coach and his unfamiliarity with defense (we all saw the guys he picked as Dcoord, dude doesn't know crap about defense much less can spell defense) and his confidence/arrogance in his system has led to us mainly drafting defensive players while he did more with less on the offensive end... Arian - undrafted, Brisiel - 6th round (jets), Dreessen - 6th round (jets), Chris Myers - 6th round, and Kevin Walter - 7th round tender.

however due to the success on defense last season and the fact that we finally found a capable Coordinator in Wade, I think this might be our most offensive heavy draft under the Kubiak regime and the first time we aggressively address that side of the ball. Frankly we have to, because it doesn't take much drop off in talent to take a complete nose dive on one side of the ball. We sold out on defense last season and it paid off, while I expect a few key picks on defense (mainly just for depth) I also see us having that kind of draft on the offensive end and it's been long over due.

I hope you're right. Time to restock.

Except for last year, Smithiak have tried to add pieces in each draft; they just haven't all panned out.
2006 - Winston, O.D. were good picks. Wali Lundy (dud), David Anderson (one pick before Marques Colston UGH!!), Charles Spencer (injury)
2007 - Jacoby Jones (time to move on), Brandon Frye (dud), Kasey Studdard (injury prone)
2008 - Duane Brown (developed into an excellent LT), Steve Slaton (we got one good year from him), Alex Brink (wasted pick)
2009 - Caldwell (we'll see this year won't we), A. Hill (good blocker, no hands), J.Casey (underused IMHO, could be more of a weapon).
2010 - Ben Tate (good pick), Garrett Graham (we'll see this year), Shelley Smith (depth IMO), Trindon Holliday (totally wasted pick), Dorin Dickerson (flyer that didn't work)
2011 - T.J. Yates (still under development :) ), Derek Newton (depth)

So yeah, it's time to draft some impact guys on offense.

Ah! Slaton. Knew i forgot somebody. You have to give them credit for molding offensive talent the way they have. It would be fun to see what they could mold if theyd start with more gifted players.

This is the inevitable topic that I've been dreading.

Carr Bombed said almost everything I wanted to say in his first post, but overall there is one fact I can't help but dwell on: Andre's tendon possesses less integrity than it did pre-injury, and the probability for re-injury remains worrisome for the rest of his career. There is no abundance of case studies to find comfort in. All we have is physics-- Less intact tissue = less resistance to whatever force that caused the initial injury.

So at the very least, the FO needs to draft a project player to learn under Andre. I can see Streeter being that guy, especially since we have a propensity to draft from Miami. I would like to see them take more than one prospect for competition. But it's time to address our future WR1 right now.

It's bad enough worrying that Andre won't ever get the ring he deserves. It's worse thinking that the team would be out of the running for at least two years because our best weapon didn't have a remotely suitable replacement.

On my mock I chose Streeter as possible AJ replacement eventually. Do you agree there is none available now. If Fleener is game fast as his 40 speed indicates he could be a WR1.

If you're asking if there's anyone good enough to be the future Texans WR1, then maybe, but WR success is so unpredictable. If you're asking if there's anyone good enough to be the next AJ, then no. The last time we saw that was Calvin Johnson, and he still doesn't have Andre's intangibles.

Yeah, I agree on AJ being replaced but you just never know when a new guy just explodes and Foster is prime example. SMithiak thought he could be productive but did not know he'd be this good. I am hopeful that Fleener could be that guy. Nothing that screams YES! but nothing really that says no way. Fleener is bigger and faster than AJ now. Whether those skills translate to the field, we will see. When I compare Coby to other WRs and TEs he stands out. I am a huge Kendall Wright fan and predicted his climb up charts along with RG3 and Blake (in one mock prior to end of season I had all three on my board and got laughed at.) Wright is about the same speed depending on which measurement you take and much smaller. Kendall much more productive in a pass happy O with Heisman winner chunking it. Wonder what Fleener would have put up with 3 or Schaub this season?

Thanks for the discussion.
