Downtown Tailgating

texanmojo

Shotgun 30 Time
Way to go H-town city council for allowing folks to tailgate in downtown Houston. This 'adjustment' will permit fans to tailgate form Astros, Rockets and Dynamo games.

Frankly I didn't t realize this was actually an issue but I applaud the change. I guess the atmosphere Uncle Bob allowed us to create at Texans games has boiled over to the other teams in town! Simply awesome!

So how does this work? Where can you tailgate? Are there set lots? Can you walk around with a beer to the stadium like you can at Texans games?

This sounds pretty neat, but I'd love some more details.

It will still be up to the individual franchises as to exactly how they will respond to this change
Each team now has a decision to make on pre-game festivities.
The Astro's have indicated they'll have a decision within a week.
Astros owner Jim Crane said Wednesday he will decide within a week whether the team will allow tailgating in lots around Minute Maid Park this season after City Council changed Houston's open container law to allow pre-game drinking at downtown sports venues.

Bravo! Ain't nothing wrong with a little tailgatin before a game (esp Astros - that's what got us through the early years of the Texans)

This is awesome, because apparently we'll need to get hammered before the Astros games this season!!!

Astros games: Get hammered...... well because that's the best part of that game experience.

Rockets: Well, because we're stuck in the middle of not particularly good, but don't necessarily SUCK!!!

Dynamo: Well, because they're pretty good!!! They brought us a couple of Championships (if your into that sorta thing), but haven't done that much since then.

That said, as SeanCablinasian (Sean Pendergast) has dubbed me "Drunk Texan Bill"............ I approve.

*imagine that*

Fixed it for you.... :thisbig:

I don't know what parking will be like for the Dynamo stadium, but as it is now, there's not much room in the paid lots around MMP to do tailgating. And what are you going to do at Rockets games, tailgate in the parking garage?

I will be attending the rugby match (USA vs. Italy) in June at BBVA Compass though so maybe I'll get a chance to do some downtown tailgating then. Of course it should only be about 9000 degrees.

Yeah, except it will be much, much cooler on the grass. With all the rain we've had we should have grass this year, right?

That'll be a good test for the USA team there Speedy, Italy have come a long way since entering the 6nations and managed to beat Scotland last weekend.

Hope you enjoy the rugby, its essentially the same game as American Football without the break between 'plays', and instead of being allowed 1 forward pass you aren't allowed any.

Hope you enjoy it! (Its my national sport btw)

I'm sorry to hear it is being allowed, but it is unlikely to catch on outside of the NFL anyway.

I doubt it will be anything like NFL tailgating...nor does it need to be but having the option for a little pregame festivities is nice.

Why would you be upset it is being allowed? No one is forcing you to participate.

I'd rather not see people allowed to gather in public and drink before games. But a lot of Rockets and Astros games are weeknight games anyway, so that isn't going to gain any traction.

False!

If I know that I can drink a few beers in the parking lot versus spending a heck of a lot more money in an establishment, I'm choosing the former. If you don't like it, don't partake. That said, don't at the same time impede on those that would enjoy it!

I'm down for drinking a couple of WAY cheaper beers in the parking lot, and I've done that before anyway. But getting out to tailgate an Astros game, in the middle of summer, isn't going to catch on with many, IMO. As I mentioned before, in the paid lots around MMP, you likely aren't going to be able to set up canopies and such. There just isn't that kind of room. And if you can't get out of the Texas sun in June, July and August, well, we all know how that is. With tailgaters coming to the game and people leaving work downtown at the same time, all parking in the same lots, I just don't see it happening during the week. Maybe a different story on the weekends. And then you've got to add porta-pissers all over the place.

And unless they're building some parking lots by BBVA, I can't see tailgating being too easy to do there either.

As for Rockets games, the only place I've ever parked to go to Toyota Center is the garage. I guess there's outside lots around there too, but I just don't see that catching on either.

This deal is mainly for the soccer fans who have been tailgating for 6 years or however long the 1836 have been here. They'll be the main ones doing the Texans-like tailgating. Doing that at baseball and basketball games, even if it's allowed, I just don't see that being much more than drinking a beer in your car with the A/C running and downing some wings you brought from Wing Stop or something. Which you could already do anyway if you really wanted to.

No argument here from me. In fact...I agree with you. What's nice is at least now you have the option to do this without hassle from Houston's finest.

Werd!!! Irrespective of "BullBlitz" BS......... YES!!! Let's a couple of boys meet downtown for a game.. bring a couple a cooler with a few beers, someone bring a few sammiches - or a pizza!!!! This is awesome!!Sorry about "Bull****z!!!, errrrrr "bullblitz being full of ****, but then again that's on him!!!

As I sit and ponder what me and Billy started the year of the World series run. I see that they (the Astros) have caught on and allowed tailgating. I am sure that wil not change or tailgating method at Minute Maid. That my friends gives me the oppurtunity to achieve the best seat for the cheapest price.
