So with Mario gone, we will more than likely draft a pass rushing specialist high. I'm not really up on my prospects, but I'd like to know what your opinions are. I read about Vontez Burfict and I think he's someone who may fill that gap. He seems to have some character issues, but I think guys like DeMeco and Cushing can keep him in line and under control.
 
Whintey Mercilus would look good in a Texans uniform. He's a realistic candidate @ #26 if the Texans don't draft a receiver there.
 
Vinny Curry from Marshall. Watched him for two years and is real deal. Great senior Bowl and great stats. I rate him just above Perry as he is stronger. Perry would not send me screaming. Available top 8 2nd round but gone before #58. Trade down?

With our situation right now a trade down would make a ton of sense. With 2 second and 2 third round picks we could adress WR, OLB, and either 2 O-Line spots or one O-line and one DT with real quality players. So I´d be ecstatic with a trade down (if no great player in a position of need magically falls to us).

Would you approve a #26 to Cleveland (Tannehill) for their 2nd & 3rd?

2nd:OLB Curry & WR McNutt
3rd: NT Josh Chapman & WR Ryan Broyles
4th: C/OG Phillip Blake
5th RT Josh Ogletree

Curry seems to be legit however, do we really need to look for OLB in the 2nd? We lost Mario in FA but, Reed and Barwin did pretty good job and they are our starters and Braman as our backup. We can find a decent back up guy at this position in later rounds and may need to focus other position instead like NT, OL (depends on FA situation). I personally don't mind us going 1WR 2NT 3WR. At WR position, we do have intriguing players like Lestar and Jeff with a year to study our system. However, don't know what we can expect from them so to me, WR position needs most attention at this point.

not really relevant but everything ive read lately says tannehill is set for a locker/ponder rise up the draft and maybe even higher. lets just say hes alot more likely to be picked with #4 than #26 by the browns

Wade desires a 3 player rotation @ OLB and Braham is a backup only that I do not want to see on field much. He might develop but should not yet be part of that rotation. After round two my ratings on OLB drops significantly. Same with WR, I don't want a back up or "intriguing" player. I need a starter so you & I agree on that. Problem is I'm concerned top 4 will be gone & one of those is Hill who I did not watch. I will not be surprised if Wade does not select a NT.

Totally disagree. I think after choosing McCoy, Cleveland wants to get it right on QB & will use #4 in a trade down or go LT. I'm seeing only Miami between them and Tannehill and Dolphins should realize better year if not two with who they have. Tennessee or Denver will get Manning and if it is Titans, I think Denver will not go Tannehill. Seattle will take the QB from GB.

He just screams OLB convert. I love watching him play, hell if we traded back for another second round pick and nabbed him early in the second, we could get him/mcnutt in round 2, maybe burfict in round 3, and then approach OG/NT in the 4th.

why would Cleveland take an LT at 4 when they have Joe thomas??

It appears the browns are gonig to stick with McCoy this yr and load up their team. If McCoy does well they've got their QB. If he doesn't they sell the farm to get Barkley or Bray in next yrs draft.

You have 1 signed RB on your roster as of current if you make that trade. So you'd have to use that pick on a RB. I see it as lateral or backwards move. Maybe next year in the second to last year of his contract possibly. If it were multiple picks or a 1st I'd take it.

Sorry but you don't watch the practices or have any idea what he is really capable of. How do you know he won't improve enough be a rotation guy?

Got news for ya. Who ever we draft at 26 is most likely a spot player at best. Especially if its a WR or OLB. Now that Ryans is gone I the only position I could see starting is ILB or DT.

He might develop but should not yet be part of that rotation.
How is he going to develop if he just sits on the side lines?

For some reason I was reading Trade tate and #26 after the whispers of trading tate away. I'll try again later, it's been a long night at work thus far.

I know this might be a stretch but if we could pull off that Ben Tate trade to Cleveland for #22, keep that pick and then trade #26 to someone for their 2nd and 3rd round picks we'd be set. We'd then have #22 as well as two 2nd's, two 3rd's, and two 4th round picks. It's late, I must be halucinating to think that Rick Smith could pull off something like this but a guy can dream can't he.

You'd have to draft rb though to offset that loss, as we only have foster signed at that point. then where are you getting tate value? It ain't a good trade the more I look at it.

3/20/12: Branch turned in an impressive Combine performance. It wasn't surprising as he looked like a fabulous athlete and speed player at Clemson. Branch is said to have performed well at his pro day too. His best fit in the NFL may be as a 3-4 outside linebacker.

Branch had a strong senior season. In 2011, he made 77 tackles with 17 tackles for a loss, 10.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Branch played well against Auburn in the third game of the year. He didn't fare well against Florida State left tackle Andrew Datko.

After that performance, Branch exploded against Virginia Tech with 11 tackles, six tackles for a loss and four sacks. He is a very good athlete who has excellent straight-line speed. Branch is very quick and agile, plus he closes in an instant.

8/21/11: Andre Branch is expected to step up his production with Da'Quan Bowers leaving for the NFL. Last year, Branch had five sacks with 8.5 tackles for a loss, 54 tackles and six passes broken up. Branch has the physical tools to excel, now he just needs to raise his level of play as a senior.

I'd love to get Andre Branch, he'd be perfect for the Texans, but I don't see any way he's available at our late 2nd round pick.

Well since you asked so nicely. Overall I don't think this is a good year for pass rushers in general be it 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE. There's a few decent/good players that fit the Texans needs but I don't see the top level talent this year. Guys I like, and the round I think they should go in:

Whitney Mercilus-1st round
Nick Perry-1st round
Andre Branch-high 2nd round
Shea McClellin-mid/low 2nd round
Bruce Irvin-low 2nd to high 3rd round

I don't think the Texans will be targeting an OLB in 1-3 rounds. I think Brooks Reed has the spot now and the Texans will be looking to add to the depth in 4-7 rounds unless someone falls to us that's just to good of a value to pass up. I also think they'll be giving Braman a chance to show what he can do. Guys I like in 4-6 rounds.

I don't, either. Not that the position isn't very important in the Texans scheme. But, I think it's a combination of more pressing needs and the lack of value in the early rounds. I do expect someone drafted later for depth and potential. Louis Nzegwu (JJ Watt's college roommate at Wisconsin) is one possibility.

03/08/12 - Wisconsin Pro day: One relatively unheralded prospect that caught the scout's eye Wednesday was defensive lineman Louis Nzegwu. Nzegwu didn't take the step up as a senior some had expected after emerging in his junior season with 46 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. Though his sack total increased (4.5), Nzegwu's tackles (34) and tackles for loss (six) dropped and he wasn't invited to the Combine. Measuring in at 6-3, 254 pounds, he demonstrated "some wow athleticism" by being clocked at 4.57 seconds in the 40-yard dash and recording a 41.5" vertical jump. Nzegwu is currently rated as a free agent prospect by NFLDraftScout.com but his athleticism certainly warrants scouts taking a closer look.

Nick Perry is a beast, if he is there when we pick which i doubt he will be, we absolutely without the shadow of a doubt take him over a receiver. hes got speed, hes so quick off the snap its ridiculous, hes got a nose for the ball, hes got a high motor which our coaches salivate at and he seems like he has a football IQ. Hed def. make you forget about Williams. If not him though I think Curry would be a decent pick. I just think receiver depth is deeper with talent then linebacker. cause i think Sanu from Rutgers could possibly be there with our # 2.. MAYBE
 
I am surprised that Darius Flemming is not getting any love. I have watched ND a couple of times the last few years, and he always caught my eye.

A late rounder to ponder...

Flemming's undersized and didn't have a lot production in terms of getting to the QB. He might be a candidate for moving inside in the 3-4.
