Could a Colts win save capers?

Yes. A win over the Colts would secure Capers' job. Well...if followed by 9 more wins over the last 10 games.

A win against the Colts would probably extend a couple of years on Carr's life.

Caper's is done. Can we get that guy Terry Robiskie to be our interum headcoach for the rest of the season?

Even before the season began, Capers was listed as one of the NFL coaches on the hot seat. It would take a winning season to keep him here. Colts win does nothing for that. I don't think anything has changed. Unless he gets a winning season, Capers is out.

No, McNair decided to not put Capers out of his misery. For some warped reason, it make more sense to leave the lame duck coach in place. It gives everyone on this team an excuse to not care about the rest of season. However, the fans are still expected to cheer on the same crappy product for the next two months.

Capers record for rest of season: 2 - 9 (maybe)
Robiskie possilble record for rest of season: 1 - 10 (based on 1 win for after changing the coach)

Does not seem like much of a difference to me.

Could a Colts win save capers?

hey, hey...let's not get emotional. ;)

Not really knowing where Mr. McNair's "line in the sand" is established, it's tough to say at what point he knows in his head that Coach Capers has to go.

I would assume that a 4-12 season (or worse) is a 'sure thing'. But what about 6-10 or 7-9 (unlikely record at this point)? idonno:

Everyone seems to be saying that Capers' being fired is almost certainly a sure thing. What about that 5-yr plan that McNair bought into? Does anyone see Capers possibly being our coach again next year? Look, Tice is still with the Vikings and Hasslet with the Saints. It's possible that McNair will let Capers stay one more year to "right the ship." It's scary but it could happen.
:ouch:

A win against the Colts might save David from getting benched But Dom's seat is red hot and it has been since the Pittifulsburgh game

I say nothing saves his job short of the playoffs.
I'm not even sure that making the playoffs would save his job. Besides, the playoffs aren't happening this year. They'd have to go at least 9-2 from this point, which puts them at 9-7 for the season. It probably will take 10-6 to make it in the AFC.

You have to remember that this is really the fifth year. Can't remember who pointed that out earlier, and I had forgotten it myself, but the first year started in 2001, when Capers was hired to get his staff together and get everything set for the expansion draft, etc. The first season was year two, and things looked pretty good. Last year things began to unravel and it's only gotten worse. We've seen no indication that this season can be salvaged. Carroll might be a decent choice, but a lot of us think Gary Kubiack would be better. Also, he has local ties to this area, or at least has in the past.

Capers is gone and he will likely find a place with another team as a LB coach or D-Coordinator consultant.

Besides armchair QBs and writers, who said his job is in jeopardy in the first place? Everything I hear from McNair has been very supportive.

But several writers (I'm thinking SI, though I am sure there are others) are already predicting Tice and Hasslet's doom. Some people think Tice may go before the end of the season. The only guarantee IMO is that Capers is out with 8 losses.

According to who? Perhaps those crazy fans with unrealistic expectations, but I think everyone who had some rationality in them would agree that an 8-8 season would be an improvement once again and would be the first non-losing season in the Texans history.

I disagree. A 4-12 season certainly isn't good, but why do you want to fire him after regressing three games without giving him credit for the improvement of two games over 2003? All of this should be taken into account. Capers has done a fine job for three years and after five games too many people are willing to throw him under the bus. I think that's pitiful.

This would be the right -- and fair -- thing to do. Capers has brought us excitement and electricity for three years. This year has indeed been bad. But is it fair to fire a guy who took an expansion team from its infancy and led it to within a game of a .500 record in just three years after just five games? I think not. Give him his five years, and then sit down and evaluate. If the team isn't where it should be, then it's time for a change. But give the guy a chance next year. Three strong seasons and one bad one certainly does NOT call for a change.

There is zero probability that McNair lets Capers coach in a lame duck year. Unless McNair plans on resigning Capers he has to let him go because the players have no reason to listen to a coach playing out the string. I'd consider Capers odds of coaching here next season at zero.

I agree with Vinny. Capers might have gotten us to 7-9 last season, but from the end of last season until now has been horrible. We improved from season 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 and have now regressed for whatever reason. Capers should get his resume ready.

This is the 3rd time Capers teams have started 0-5 if I have my stats right. Right now we are 3-11 in our last 14 games on top of that.

According to several media outlets who saw the team starting to regress at about week 9 last season. They have 1 win over a decent team (and 3 total wins) in the past 14 games.

Not quite yet, but he's gettin' there.

What's "fair" is to expect progress. When he was making progress no great numbers of people around here (or anywhere else) were seriously calling for the guy's head. Now he'll be fired at (or near) the end of the season, and that will be absolutely, positively fair.

Do we really need the media to tell us what we see? We can all see the last 14 games and its been painful.

The thing is... not all have seen it. Several people on this board were happy with last year's results not realizing that the team regressed over the second half of the season. I was chastized relentlessly for pointing out this fact.

That 7-9 record clouded a lot of minds. In retrospect it's so very obvious that we were headed nowhere in 2004. We had this little run at the end which fooled a lot of us which is a shame. We beat the Titans who were in decline, the Jaguars who always seem to have a problem with us and are middle of the road at best, and the Bears who were miserable. That got us excited.

People who've watched a couple of seasons of mostly hopeless football tend to get excited like that.

I am surprised by the number of fans here who are rooting for a turn around, and are hoping for an 8-8 or 7-9 season.

Anything that gives Capers any sort of chance to save his job is out of the question for me. And THAT'S the sort of thing that happens, too. The guy will slip out of the hangman's noose somehow and he'll be back for his farewell 5th year of the 5-year-Capers-plan.

I am just in awe at how he's still here. The biggest thing is this: He doesn't even have the smarts to...just...walk...away...on his own. He keeps enduring the beating, and dragging us to the emergency room with him.

Please, football gods...make McNair pull the trigger on the Capers dismissal.

Monday morning would be nice.

Unlikely at best but I expect a beat down tomorrow that makes Texas-Texas Tech look like a low scoring overtime game. The Colts are going to beat us like a drum. I'm thinking 7-8 sacks tomorrow. It's going to be ugly.

At 0-5 if, a big IF we beat the Colts this w/end, then Capers deserves to be allowed to run for President. That's how big of a miracle it would be. If he can conjure that up for us imagine what worth he'd be looking for Bin-Laden ...

I totally agree!!!

Now we all know what Capers :homer: is writing in his little notebook----his resume!

You guys need to let him go reguardless. How much time do you need? It's not like the team is not talented, he's just doing a bad job coaching. IMO

At this point, if the Texans go 8-8, chances are it will be because they beat teams like Tennesse, Cleveland, Arizona, San Fran, St. Louis, and Baltimore. All abysmal teams, and having a team that IMO can only win against other inept teams is not the direction I am hoping for this team to take. They are not producing, and so I think the coaching staff will be removed, and I think this will be within reason.

:goodnight
