Wow, per @JasonLaCanfora #Titans are expected to tag Cortland Finnegan. Beat guys there have not been expecting that.

Titans will not place their franchise tag on cornerback Cortland Finnegan, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent.

When Falcons franchised CB Brent Grimes, it marked the first time Atlanta has used franchise tag. Seattle has used it an NFL high 10 times.

ESPN's Adam Schefter on 2012 franchise tags: "One GM estimated...that we could see roughly 25 franchise tags, 11 more than any other year."

Why don't the Chargers sign Jackson to a long term contract if they are so worried about losing him?

Cardinals announced that the team has placed the franchise tag on defensive end Calais Campbell.

You could ask the same question of every player who is (or ever has been) franchised. The answer is...
mlm-traing-mlm.jpg

I'm sure most of the teams using franchise tags want to reach a long term deal - and many will before the deadline. Sometimes it just takes a while to get there.

The one person truly holding back the Chargers from winning is Turner and maybe that is why he does not want to stay.

No flippin' way.

I think it will be funny as hell.

I don't like how guys sit out because of the franchise tag. That was agreed upon by the players association & the owners. IMO, every time a player sits out because of the franchise tag, as an owner, I would want to find a way to take action against the NFLPA.

If they didn't like it, they shouldn't have agreed to it. If that meant a hold-out..... so be it.

If that meant a longer hold out.. so be it.

forgive my ignorance, but can you franchise Mario in an attempt to trade him, but if there are no buyers can you release him without taking a cap hit?

DeSean Jackson, WR $9.5 million
Jackson was one of the big names that everyone expected to be tagged. And he was hit with the tag on Thursday. The question is whether or not the Eagles will shop him or look for a long-term deal.

Brent Grimes, CB $10.4 million
Although Grimes had a standout 2009 and 2010, his play fell off a bit last year, and Atlanta might be worried about giving him a long-term deal.

Ray Rice, RB $7.7 million
Rice wants Adrian Peterson money (or, ahem, $100 million), but we think he's worth closer to what DeAngelo Williams makes (five years, $43 million).

Dashon Goldson, S $6.2 million
After having to sign a one-year, $2 million deal for 2012 (after turning down a five-year, $25 million offer), it seems that Goldson might have to wait a little longer before a long-term deal comes his way.

Calais Campbell, DL $10.6 million
Campbell was a top priority for Arizona to keep, and the Cardinals would like to sign him to a long-term deal. For now, though, he'll have to be content with the tag.

Mike Nugent, K ~$2.6 million
Nugent, 30, converted 87 percent of his field-goal attempts in 2011 and added an impressive 36 touchbacks.

Phil Dawson, K $3.8 million
The going rate for franchised kickers is about $2.6 million but Dawson was franchised in 2010 too, so he's set to make $3.8 in '11. Seems like a high price to pay for a 37-year-old who had two kicks blocked and managed just 10 touchbacks.

Fred Davis, TE $5.4 million
Davis missed the final four games of the 2011 season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy, but he still had a career year: 59 catches, 796 yards and three TDs in 12 games. The thinking: RG3 (or, more generally, QBs not named Rex or John) is going to need somebody to throw to, right?

Tyvon Branch, S $6.2 million
The Raiders informed Branch, one of the team's best players last season, that he would likely be tagged and Friday it happened. The move means that RB Michael Bush is headed for free agency.

Matt Forte, RB $7.7 million
No surprise here. The two sides couldn't come to an agreement before the season and then Forte went down with a knee injury late in the season.

Matt Forte, RB $7.7 million
No surprise here. The two sides couldn't come to an agreement before the season and then Forte went down with a knee injury late in the season.

Drew Brees, QB $14.4 million
This move is an utter failure in the negotiations between Brees and the Saints on a long-term deal, but both sides have to be hopeful they can still work out a deal. The problem here is that the team probably will lose guard Carl Nicks with this move.

Connor Barth, K $2.6 million
Barth's reportedly reportedly tagged a year after knocking down 92.7 percent of his field goals for the Bucs. But yes, it's still not usually a good thing when a team has to tag its kicker.

Josh Scobee, K $2.6 million
Scobee was the biggest point-scorer on an anemic Jags offense in 2011, and knocked down 92 percent of his field goals, making him a solid target for the tag, even if he is a kicker.

Matt Prater, K $2.6 million
Prater only hit 76 percent of his field goals, but he nailed some long, clutch kicks for Denver. Also, he was worshipped by Jesus in a Saturday Night Live skit. That alone is worth a tag.

Cliff Avril, DE $10.6 million
Avril would've made a fortune on the free-agent market, but Detroit isn't letting him walk. They tagged him on Monday morning and desperately need to work out an extension.

Michael Griffin, S $6.2 million
Griffin, not cornerback Cortland Finnegan, got the franchise tag from the Titans on Monday. At $6.2 million, that's quite a nice value for the team.

Anthony Spencer, LB $8.8 million
The Cowboys tagged Spencer late on Monday even though he hasn't been that productive of a player since being a first-round pick. However, Dallas feels that the market will be tough for pass-rushing linebackers.

Wes Welker, WR $9.4 million
No surprise here as our Pats Rapid Reporter Greg Bedard reports that Welker got the tag. New England simply can't afford to lose their best wideout.

Dwayne Bowe, WR $9.4 million
The expectation after the Chiefs signed Stanford Routt was that Bowe would be franchised. The Chiefs announced that he was given the tag on Monday afternoon.

Steve Weatherford, P $2.5 million
Weatherford became just the third punter to ever receive the franchise tag when the Giants hit him with it on Monday.

Robert Mathis, DE $10.6 million
The Colts haven't "officially" announced the move, but they've reportedly tagged Mathis and have tentatively agreed to a long-term deal.

30 more minutes until tag deadline. Will we tag Myers?

Doubtful on the tag. His interest around the league will be pretty small. He's 30, and is only useful in a ZBS. There are few teams who will want him. Redskins, Seahawks, Broncos, Packers and Raiders are the only ones that come to mind.

The Raiders are currently over the cap and need to cut guys just to make the 51 man cap by March 13th. Probably won't cut enough to make a run at Myers, but could.

The Seahawks could spend money on him, but they already have Max Unger at Center, and have had him there for a couple years. Drafted him in 2009 in the second round. Probably not looking to replace him.

The Redskins would probably want Brisiel over Myers. They recently re-signed their Center from last year for 4 years 12 million. He was a 7th round pick originally, but they re-signed him, so they obviously like him. They could move that guy to guard and go for Myers, but I doubt it.

The Broncos have lots of money to spend this offseason. They currently have 2010 3rd round pick JD Walton from Baylor starting at Center. Myers is certainly better than Walton, but Walton has proved to be a capable Center. They have a very young line, with the exception of Chris Kuper (29), all were drafted in 2008 or later by the Broncos. I would expect them to keep the 5 together and continue to build chemistry. If they were to look for an o-lineman though, Center would be the position to upgrade. Could definitely be in play for Myers.

The Packers have some money to spend this year, but I think they will try to re-sign Scott Wells first. Hopefully that will give us time to work a deal with Myers :)

As @ProFootballTalk reported, Giants placed their franchise tag on punter Steve Weatherford.

lol, wtf? The Giants are reportedly over the cap too...

Was Al Davis buried in Arlington??

Jerrah has always had a soft spot for troubled/lazy but talented players.

Spencer has all the tools to be an elite pass rusher and being on the opposite side of the best in the game should help him. Too bad he likes to take plays off.

His backup Victor Butler is a better rusher, but Spencer can hold up to the run very well.

Hopefully this means that the Boys can use a high pick or three on the secondary.

Don't they need a Guard and Tackle too? I thought their o-line was still pretty bad.

The guards are old but serviceable. They have good young tackles but they should probably flip sides this season.

Cowboys secondary is their big weakness. Newman has always been overrated and Jenkins is pretty much Dunta Robinson. The safties are both terrible as well. Cowboys would have easily made the playoffs if they had a little better play in the back end.

It will be a secondary player taken first, unless Trent Richardson drops to them somehow.

Not shocking to me. There are already 4 kickers that have been franchise tagged at 2.7 million. Probably more of a place holder than the price they will end up paying the guy.

Personally, I would want Decastro over Richardson. If your guards are old, either one could be replaced by him. I don't think there are a lot of good secondary prospects in the 1st besides Claiborne who will be long gone by the time the Cowboys pick. I think a trade down might be their best scenario. If they could drop to 20-30 and pick up a 2nd and late round pick, they would be better off.

A center would be a good pick up for the Cowboys. The position has been crap since cutting Gurode.

The Cowboys have a ton of young or in their prime talent, so getting a playmaker may be better than trading back to get more picks. If OLB/DE Nick Perry or NT Poe are there, I think Jerry will be tempted.

I assume the Cowboys will go whole-hog in FA to get a CB. I hope its not Finnegan.
