granted I'm obviously more focused on the Texans, but from the games I've watched this season - the Texans are leading the league about 3 to 1 in terms of special teams penalties for holding and blocks in the back. likewise i would like to find the stats to see where perception ranks towards reality.
the second point misses completely. we use a fair amount of starters on special teams and players who are true special teamers such as Braman and Mcmannis. the talent, especially this season, has been the best Joe has had in years, but he hasn't changed. as a motivator he's second to none, the next bill cowher, but as a coordinator he's simply not doing his job - the schemes, execution, teaching, and adjustments are all lacking. the only reason we are even respectable this season is talent alone.
So you don't know the stats, but are going to claim their "holding penalties" are at a rate that is 3 to 1. Okay.
Brian Braman wasn't kept on this roster due to special teams play.. He was kept on this team because he flashed on defense and looked like a player worth keeping. In order to justify his spot he's had to play on special teams and has turned into one of our best players (yep, coaching has nothing to do with that).
Same thing with McMannis who you also brought up. All offseason (what offseason this team actually had) and during the preseason the only thing we heard was how this kid was kicking ass in the nickle, was going to be our nickle corner. The decision to keep him on the team wasn't strictly a ST decision.
When judging a ST coach you have to keep in mind that the ST coach literally can only vouch for maybe two players during the draft....and the team does NOT draft for STs. Braman was not added to be a great STs player and neither was Molden when he was added either...(another player who coach Joe turned into a STs ace when he was healthy), Teams draft for backup and they don't give the STs coach hardly any consideration (if they did Hartmann would've been actually drafted and Turk would've been out of a job a LONG time ago)
ST coaches have to deal with the scrap that's left over and while y'all are busy pulling up those penalty stats...please pull up the defensive kick return stats, which Houston has been a league leader at since coach Marciano has been here. We don't have kicks returned against us plain and simple and that's the one area that you can consistently judge a ST coach in.
As far as returners... J.J. Moses was able to make a living here (that says more about Coach Marciano than it does J.J. Moses), Jerome Mathis was a probowler, and now Jacoby "I suck at life" Jones was a pro bowl alternate... Not to mention the success that Manning had returning kicks before he was pulled off of it.
Sorry, but it's completely asinine to call out our STs coach when he doesn't even control what level of crap (jones) ends up on his squad and unlike even Igor, he can't even get Jacoby a abinormal brain.
Our problem on STs doesn't have crap to do with the coaching and it isn't a coaching issue...we need better players. We had a stud P before he went down so I'll let Turk slide, but we need a damn kicker and not a retread either. We also need a kick returner next season. Marciano whiffed on holiday, but I'm not going to hold his decision to draft a world class athlete against him.
