Time to talk offseason

Pantherstang84

@rolisrgti06
With the weaknesses at WR and CB with the Texans up against the cap, there will need to be a few cap casualties. Don't forget Foster has to get paid too. Name em and why. I'll go first...

Mario Williams. It was Mario's bad luck he got injured. His injury gave Brooks Reed an opportunity and he made the best of it.

WR and a true #2 CB are our biggest needs. I'm too bummed to talk specific right now though.

But pay Foster. Pay the man, Rick.

I liked the progress of McCain, McMannis, and KJ this season. although it took KJ much longer than the other 2. Isn't Allen a FA in the offseason? He may or may not walk, and hopefully Brandon Harris has been getting coached up while he's watched this defense play outstanding like

I am wondering if we need to trade Mario this season to keep things together enough to make a run with a healthy Schaub.

I really like Mario, but you have to make some tough calls.

We really need another playmaking WR.

I imagine we might have seen the last of Dreessen too. He has played well this year and with the emergence of the TE position this year, he might end up getting more than we can pay.

This thinking just doesn't make sense to me. If you want this defense to be what we think it should be, you add a Mario Williams, you don't subtract one. If you don't resign him, then an outside pass rusher becomes imperative in the upcoming draft. 1st or 2nd round.

Instead, let the freak'n GM do his job & manage the cap, sign Mario & get us 3 or 4 offensive studs in this upcoming draft.

We'll blow the doors off the NFL next season.

Not yet ... I'm just not ready for anything yet.

The one saving grace is, we don't have to keep typing next year. We made it to next year.

Tough game today. We could have won, but the way we played, we have a bright future ahead of us. I wanted to make this thread with all of us talking about who we should keep and who should go.

Keep Arian Foster for sure! Sign that man to a long term deal! Give him the big bucks! Keep Williams as well. Brooks was really good this year, but having Mario and Brooks changing out, we can be unstoppable!

Cut Jacoby. Sorry dude, not only did that muff cost us the game, you have been very lazy. Cap casualty. Also Hot tub time machine will be gone as well. Maybe we can trade him for some value, but the way TJ performed, TJ gets promoted to back up.

So Texans fans, Who stays? Who goes? Who should we pick up?
Let the discussion start now!

The whole defense stays.
Wade stays.
The whole O-line stays... well, maybe we bring in someone to challenge Caldwell for his spot.

I'm not as excited about Mr. T.J. INT being our #2 QB as some of you are. Needs to learn how to look off the safeties a lot better. Needs to go thru his progressions more effectively. I like his mobility and arm strength but he needs more seasoning. I'd hate to think of what our record would be if he started all 16 games.

We need two WRs, maybe one from the draft and a vet from F/A.

If Allen leaves via F/A we'll need someone with experience to replace him. I'd rather see KJ go to nickle.

Off season talk, OK. Who's our QB for the start of the season? Schaub isn't coming back that soon, not from that injury. Yates could be much better I think if he has the off season and training camp taking the 1st string reps.

Don't tell Schaub that. I think he thinks he will be ready for OTAs. Jus' sayin'.

Schaub is already off the crutches and putting weight on the foot.

What sort of timeline is ahead for you in your rehab?

“It’s going to be a few months here because I’ll have to go in and get some hardware removed out of my foot. I’ll most likely be ready to participate in OTAs, definitely training camp be full-go. But the fact that it’s going to be the offseason, I want to make sure I’m doing it right and not do too much too soon. But it feels great and we’re a couple weeks ahead of schedule, but just need to keep working at it so hopefully this offseason, we’ll be fine.”

You were playing some of the best football of your career before your injury. This almost goes without saying, but next season probably can’t come soon enough for you…

“I’ve never been more excited for OTAs and training camp ever in my life. So, yeah, I’ll be counting the days until then, so I’m excited to get back out there with the guys.”

This loss is not on Gary today. The defense played very well and did a fabulous job against Rice. Joseph basically shutdown and dominated Smith all day long. Yates made some mental errors which were too much to over come. All and all it was a great seaon I am happy and proud of the Texans and Gary and Wade too and you guys know that means a lot because I am always very critical of Kubiak. Imagine if Schaub played today then I am pretty sure Gary and Wade get the job done together but just not with Yates who was not too horrid when you consider everything. As far as the offseason is concerned I would re-sign as many free agents as possible and I know that some will have to leave but I am not going to guess who that will be right now. Aftwards I would definitely upgrade the number two receiver position and move Walter the number three making Jones the odd man out after his performance today. I also would upgrade the number two CB spot because Jackson nor Allen are great. Then everywhere else like LB and OL just draft depth and BPA. Congratulations to the Texans on their first ever playoff appearance and win. Overall I am happy about the future with hopefully Wade staying put now. Get Matt Schaub back next season because he is the one who leads the offense and makes them move better and then the sky is the limit IMHO. GO TEXANS SEE YOU NEXT SEASON

How many offseason threads do we have? Three and counting? Let's look at existing threads before starting new ones.

If Bob McNair is smart, he'll look for a new head coach. Unfortunately, he'll probably extend Kubiak's contract for 2-3 more years since he finally got 1 playoff win in 5 seasons. I'd also do everything in my power to ensure that Wade Phillips remains the defensive coordinator.

You can bank on that happening.

This will also happen

Another thing you can count on is season ticket prices going...

Matt thinks he'll be ready for OTAs........ just push play.

cap casualties are Williams and trade Tate for picks. Williams is a great pass rusher but not at the price he is gonna ask, Tate is a solid #2 RB and could start on a lot of teams which is why you trade him for a first and a second or even just a first.

Gary is not going anywhere and he'll be fine as long as Wade is here but I still would rather have a better HC too.

If your parents were smart they would restrict your computer access and make you get some exercise, or pick up a book sometime.

Now is not the time for a new head coach.

The 2012 NFL Free Agency period will start on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at 4:00 pm ET/3:00 pm CT/1:00 pm PT.

Can't Wait

Well I really dont feel like thinking about anything football related right now.. but I figure its time to man up and quit being a ***** about it. We lost.. I wish I could crawl in a corner and sleep till next season, but I cant, so lets just go ahead and face the vast expanse of barren wasteland that is the offseason like men.

So. Lets get this out of the way first.

1) We need a wide receiver. I think this may be our biggest need going in to the draft. We cant really afford to sign someone in free agency because we already have one highly paid superstar in Andre Johnson...we cant afford to tie up that much cap space in just the WR corp. I think our best bet is to make WR our top priority in the draft.

This of course means that we can cut Jacoby Jones. Cut really doesnt seem like a severe enough adjective. We need to sunder... no CLEAVE.. we can now CLEAVE Jacoby Jones from the team.

2) The Ravens game does have one very thin...very dull and tarnished silver lining. We dont have to worry about a quarterback controversy. There were rumblings in the community about whether or not we needed to go in to next season with Yates as our starter and have Schaub as a backup..or trade Schaub and move forward with Yates. Well we can now put that whole debate to rest right here right now. In my mind Schaub has always been the clear cut starter..and I think everyone can agree on that now. I think Yates is our future.. but he needs a year or two behind schaub to work on his progression and decision making.

The only worry I have is that, back when Schaub got injured, I heard some people talking about how he may not be able to come back immediately this next season. I heard that he may actually miss the first few weeks. I dont know if there was any truth to that though. Hopefully he will be 100% and ready to go come September.

3) The secondary. I think that the secondary is a secondary concern (hey-o! im hee-larious). While I do see some weak spots in it.. overall I feel like we are "acceptable" there. But if we can pick up a promising CB in the 2nd or 3rd round (after we get a WR) id be all for that. Kareem Jackson doesnt seem to be improving by leaps and bounds.

4) Who are our key offseason signings? I think if possible we need to give Wade a big fat raise. Whatever Kubiak makes.. we need to give Wade 1 dollar less than that. Arian Foster needs to get paid too. Best RB in the league needs to know that we want him to stay here and keep it up. Who else needs to get paid?

Anyway.. guess thats it for now. We have a loooooong road ahead of us to next season. I guess there is one more thin tarnished silver lining.. we are a young team. We are gonna be playoff bound again next year.

i havent watched all of the ravens game but based on what ive seen all season long team needs

1. WR we need one either in the draft or or Free agent wise i say free agent route cause IMO WR take a little bit of time to get into the NFL but hey it depends on what WR falls to us

2. RT eric winston isnt that good and well we need to find someone else and movie him inside or somethin a new guard wouldnt hurt either since brisles gets hurt and is gettin up there

3. a Better FB wouldnt hurt either maybe we can get leech back LOL

4. I think special teams neeedddsss helllp we need a new Punter and some better special swiss army knife type players

now for the D

-having a BIG fat albert NT that can rotate would be cool imo

- Linebacker Depth is needed never can have enough of thoes

-And once Troy nolan went down is this FS could use some lookin at

Brethren here is my take on our needs going into the 2012 NFL Off Season.

1. Wideout - Look this is a huge need as Kevin Walters was paid 3 million & Jacoby Jones made 3.5 Million based on his average years in his contract that 6.5 million tied up in slow route running by walters & dropped passes by both Jones and Walters it's time to move on. The Texans have to either go after a top notch Free Agent such as Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe or Harry Douglass or Draft WR in the upcoming 2012 NFL draft in the first round and the 4th round with mid-level free agent.

2. The Free Safety slot is a huge need as i'm tired of seeing Glover Quinn out of position.

3. NT Position - Even though the guys performed well we still could use a plugger in the middle.

4. Outside Linebacker - This is an interesting situation here as Connor Barwin & Reed Balled all season long and the Mario Williams free agent situation is something to watch as we might have to do a sign trade just to keep from losing him out-right and we might not need him after Brooks Reed & Connor played so well and we could build depth and someone to compete with Brooks reed.

5. 5 Technique Depth - Behind JJ Watt & Antonio Smith we need another solid 5 Technique for the rotation.

6. Offensive Guard - We need another player as we had some injuries and the offensive line held up but we need

7. QB Depth - We need to draft another QB as Matt Lineart situation is up in the air so those are my thoughts guys.

Just like Rick Smith addressed our secondary by signing JoJo and Manning last offseason, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets two guys to upgrade our WR position. Maybe a veteran FA (there's going to be quite a few good ones) and then maybe someone in the late first or second round who could eventually take over for AJ.

Regarding your concerns about CB2.. I'm hoping that after his "redshirt" year this year, Brandon Harris can really step up and contribute next year, so hopefully we won't need to tie our resources to that position..

Also a big acquisition on my wish list is to sign FA kicker Josh Scobee, Rackers will be 36 at the start of next season, and as we saw today, his leg on 40+ yarders is too unreliable.

QB: T.J. had some flashes and some fizzles, to put it lightly. Say what you will, but I haven't seen enough out of Leinart to say that he needs to hit the bricks in favor of T.J. taking the back-up role. 13 passes as a starter is not a big enough sample size and I look forward to he and T.J. competing for the roster spot in training camp/preseason next year.

RB: Pay Arian Foster at all costs. Nuff' said. Also, a hat tip to Ben Tate who had an exceptional season in relief duties.

FB: Vickers is plenty good enough, despite his stone hands. I think Casey however is wasting his time, he is a pretty good catching AND blocking tight-end who can add some serious depth there.

WR: I think we need at least two WRs so that we can say happy trails to both Jacoby and Walter. Don't get me wrong, I like Walter...but he's been off the past couple of seasons. He just doesn't have that sure handedness that made him a nice compliment to AJ anymore. As much as I would like a big FA signing to address this, our cap situation will virtually guarantee that we handle this in the draft.

TE: Again, I think Casey should be made a permanent TE. Between Daniels, Dreeseen, and Casey we are set at TE (provided Daniels can stay healthy).

O-line: Our o-line is good as is, it has a great chemistry and just gets sh!t done. I wouldn't change a thing other than to start grooming some young guys for the future.

DE: J.J. Watt and Antonio Smith are beasts, nuff said. Again, grab some depth guys as an insurance policy...but we are set at this position for the foreseeable future.

NT: Cody was the one 'meh' player in our front seven this year. He wasn't terrible, but didn't contribute anything particularly special ("On The Nose" aside)...I would like to bring someone in to compete with him for the job. Again, call me crazy but I can only wonder if Wade has considered giving Mario a go at it when he is healthy, now that we are set at:

LB: Our LB corp in general is deadly. Barwin and Reed are a good tandem and I don't even need to mention Cushing and Demeco. There also seems to be some good depth (even not counting Mario) in Braman, Alexander, and Dobbins (who made an awesome goal line stop today) we are good here.

CB/S: I think we are more or less set at CB. I know there are going to be people who will always think KJ is sh!t no matter how he plays on the field, but the kid showed a lot of improvement this season and stepped it up in the playoffs. I look forward to seeing how much he progresses with an actual off-season under Phillips. Also, I need to eat my crow regarding Brice McCain...he turned out to be a great nickel corner. All in all CB is a much stronger position for us than people are giving us credit for. As for S, we are set. Quin and Manning both had great seasons, and Nolan/Demps is good enough for depth.

K/P: I'm not a Rackers fan, he's far too inconsistent. I say send him packing and see if we can land either Josh Scobee or Conor Barth in FA. Also, a hat tip to Matt Turk, who did better than anyone expected (though still pretty mediocre). Thanks for the last hurrah, Turkey! Looking forward to having Hartmann back.

KR/PR: Anyone but Jacoby Jones. Seriously, give me a gimped out Kasey Studdard at PR over Jacoby Jones...a.n.y.o.n.e.

Coaches: Kubes, congrats - you'll be keeping your job of course. Looking forward to having Schaub back next year so you can prove to me that it wasn't all Wade. Also, thanks for staying Wade...losing you at DC would have sucked something epic.

S&C: I don't how the strength and conditioning stuff works...but it needs improved, we are the most chronically injury plagued team in history. Drink more milk!

GQ plays strong safety.

Wide-out is the biggest need this time. I don't want Jones on this team anymore and Walter, sad to say, is no longer a starter IMO, although he's still a keeper. Otherwise, I just look for another good BPA draft and pray that Schoob....ur, Schaub....is back and healthy ASAP.

Good post. It will be interesting to watch the mock draft and free agent posts that are sure to start sprouting up...

Just a couple of comments....
:D

QB: T.J. had some flashes and some fizzles, to put it lightly. I wonder if they'll invite Delhomme back to compete with Leinart for the #2 spot.

RB: Pay Arian Foster at all costs. Nuff' said. Also, a hat tip to Ben Tate who had an exceptional season in relief duties.
Ward is a F/A this off-season. Will he be back or will they look for younger legs behind Foster/Tate?
FB: Vickers is plenty good enough, despite his stone hands. I think Casey however is wasting his time, he is a pretty good catching AND blocking tight-end who can add some serious depth there.
I'd like to see Casey used more. Dennison/Kubiak aren't using him sufficiently enough for my tastes.

Agreed. Bring someone in to challenge KW for that #2 WR spot. If Jacoby makes the final cut after camp (and I'm afraid he'll be in camp), Rick Smith didn't do his job.

TE: Again, I think Casey should be made a permanent TE. Between Daniels, Dreeseen, and Casey we are set at TE (provided Daniels can stay healthy).
If there's a budding Vernon Davis or Gronkowski out there, snag him. Otherwise we can stand pat.

O-line: Our o-line is good as is, it has a great chemistry and just gets sh!t done. I wouldn't change a thing other than to start grooming some young guys for the future.
Agreed.

This is where I let Uncle Wade make the call. If he sees someone he likes in two of the first three rounds, he gets them. We need a stud WR in one of those rounds but I have no issue with giving Wade more tools to work with in the early rounds.

I think Hitman Hartmann will be back at punter. It'll be interesting to see if he's 100%. I don't want to "send Rackers packing" unless someone comes in and actually beats him out. He's good enough unless we find someone who can nail them - consistently - from 50+.

Has the second most tackles on the team and his coverage ability allows Wade to dial up more flexible blitzing. the only reason i would even consider drafting a free safety would be for when Quin plays press on a tight end and they bring in Nolan. Quin has been solid this year and we have more pressing needs.
