Jaguars given permission to interview Mularkey
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Falcons coach Mike Smith says Atlanta has granted the Jaguars permission to interview Atlanta offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey for Jacksonville’s head coaching vacancy.

Smith said Monday the Falcons “have signed off and granted that opportunity.” He says Mularkey’s “sole focus” this week is on Sunday’s playoff game at the New York Giants.

None of the Jags candidates are very good, great for all of us though.

Fisher is interviewing with Miami today. I'm interested to see if Perry Fewell gets a look I felt that would have been a good hire for a Tenn last year.

Mike Sherman could end up as head coach of the Bucs. I hope he gets it, that would be a hell of an upgrade from being HC at A&M.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have contacted former Green Bay Packers and Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman regarding their vacant head coaching job. The team is in the process of scheduling an interview, a source said Tuesday.

The Bucs fired Raheem Morris on Monday after three seasons. Morris went 17-31, including a 10-6 mark in 2010, when the Bucs narrowly missed the playoffs. His entire staff of assistants was dismissed, too.

Sherman was 57-39 in six seasons with the Packers and won three NFL North titles. He was 25-25 in four seasons at Texas A&M and took two teams to bowl games.

It's possible the Bucs would lean toward a former NFL head coach with offensive experience to help quarterback Josh Freeman, who is considered one of the top young quarterbacks in the league.

Strange there have been no Cowher murmurings...

I saw where Gruden came out and said, "I'm staying in the broadcast booth next year."

Turner being brought back shows me that Fisher is looking to get paid and get near autonomy. Fisher made sense in SD.

Kroenke of the Rams won't pay Fisher what he wants. Too cheap.

With Polian out in Indy (thanks Irsay) they may be making a big splash. Fisher or Cowher fit that bill but they haven't even fired their coach yet. I hope that whole shithouse goes up in flames to be honest. Trade or cut Manning. Please. Would love for the Texans to compete in a division with rookie and 2nd yr QBs that already look pretty pedestrian. Not sold on Luck either...especially on that team which should lose Wayne, Mathis, Bracket, and maybe Saturday. Colts will suck again next year without Manning.

Thanks again, Irsay.

Don't understand the reasoning behind keeping Turner. The Chargers have underachieved big time since he got there. They got to the AFC championship game his first season but haven't been close since. I thought Fisher would have been a good choice in SD as well.

According to Kuharsky, Fisher doesn't want full autonomy.
Power: There can be a misperception he’d want general manager powers. He won’t. He wants to work with a GM he gets along with and can build consensus with. Fisher will want control of his 53-man roster. And he won’t want a situation where a GM is forcing free agents or draft picks on him that he and his staff don’t want. But wanting a voice is a lot different from wanting to be a de facto GM. He believes in the value of a traditional coach-GM split and has no desire to work the scouting end of things as a fulltime GM.
Also, I know he's not a coach, but Jerry Angelo was fired as GM of the Bears.

Well autonomy to hire a GM he is friends with ala Kubiak hiring Rick. Obviously Fisher can't be coach and GM but I am sure he wants to bring people in, including a fisher-guy GM.

Fisher is going to ask for a lot and he should get it if names like Cowher and to a lesser extent Gruden stay in broadcasting

I guess when I read "full autonomy" I was thinking Mike Holmgren full autonomy and not Gary Kubiak full autonomy.

Don't know if this is in his mind at all but one thing to consider is the Hall of Fame. Cowher is eligible next year if he does not return to coaching. If he does he is delaying it for however long he coaches plus another five years.

Don't remember my exact comment during the past off season but got blasted for indicating Tampa Bay would not do well this year and last year was a fluke.
I don't think it was me, I always thought they were pretenders, even during last season. I'd like to see Sherman get the job, or at least a head coach position somewhere, he deserves another shot. I'm pretty sure they went 1-6 against winning teams last year and the other 9 wins were over crappy West teams + the Panthers. That has pretender written all over it.

Near autonomy was what I wrote but that is an oxymoron tbh. You are either autonomous or not autonomous. Let's just say he wants some control to hire who he wants, and a nice contract that gives him some nice job security.

Turner stays? How... does this man not only keep getting chances as a HC, but also has managed to turn what was once the most talented roster in the NFL to a a disappointment?

Just heard on NFLN that Andy Reid will be back next year. Guess I'm not too surprised. Got the impression from the Eagles GM that next year will be put up or get put out for Reid though. He didn't say it in those words but, the whole, "we expect great things next season" sounds like it's Super Bowl or clean house to me.

Norv seems to have Gary Kubiak immunity
For pretty much the same reasons or at least perceived reasons by many here. Money. Turner and A.J. Smith are under contract and Spanos doesn't want to pay off their current contract and hefty cash to another HC & GM. At least that's what Golic said on Mike & Mike yesterday morning.

I think some owners have the opposite reaction to mediocre season. There seems to be a lot of teams hitting the reset button every 2-3 years hoping to hit the quick turn around. The better teams in the league not only have consistency at HC, but have HC who can identify talented coaches to bring into the fold.

To me the obvious problem is Norv. His team has fallen off the map since his arrival, despite what his players say. I can see why a guy like Reid gets another year and I think Coughlin would've too even if he didn't make the playoffs.

According to Schefter via Twitter, it sounds like the Chiefs are going with Crennel. Not surprising, but still reduces open HC positions to four with Fisher's decision probably coming early next week.

Chiefs are planning to retain Romeo Crennel and remove interim tag from his title. Move would be popular in the locker room.

So which HC positions are currently still open? So far I can think of:

Jaguars
Rams
Dolphins
Buccaneers
Chiefs

Potentially the Colts, as I don't think Irsay has made up his mind on Caldwell.

Any more than that?

Probably fewer. From all indications, everything is done regarding the Chiefs removing the interim tag from Crennel except the official announcement.

I pretty much guaranteed it, I said their 10 wins was the product of a weak schedule.

Something that bears watching for Texans fans - since it pertains to the Colts' front office - is this bit that's come out of New Orleans:

New Orleans Saints top scout contacted by Colts for GM job

The Indianapolis Colts have contacted the Saints seeking permission to speak with Rick Reiprish, the Saints director of college scouting, according to a league source. The Colts dismissed their GM, Bill Polian, after a 2-14 season.

The Colts owner Jim Irsay tweeted Saturday the club will have interviewed 7 potential candidates for the job by Monday. Saints officials declined comment on the matter.
New Orleans has picked up a steady stream of top contributors since 2004, including Pro Bowlers DE Will Smith, T Jammal Brown, S Roman Harper, G Jahri Evans and G Carl Nicks as well as CB Malcolm Jenkins, DT Sedrick Ellis, CB Tracy Porter and RB Reggie Bush. The draft has also brought late-round finds such as Evans, Nicks and WR Marques Colston, and the scouts have made savvy discoveries in undrafted free agents, most notably RB Pierre Thomas.
This is someone that the Saints organization does NOT want to lose. He's been absolutely integral to our organization and our recent drafts. The Saints have had a reputation scouting and drafting from small schools in mid- and later rounds and UDFAs. And a lot of that is credited to Reiprish.

He's got an eye for talent and is very well-respected in the FO. I hope we don't lose him. And, if I'm a Texans fan, I hope the Colts don't. I think this guy is a promising candidate.

Reid has the backing of either the Eagles president, or their owner. Reports and articles I've seen say that he's got the job for as long as he wants it.

Or owners dont want to have to pay off a contract and hire a GM/HC

I'm sure the ablity to identify/hold onto quality assistant coaches is the reason BoB didn't fire Gary after last season.

Look for Gary to get a 3 yr extention. Which I dont have a problem with as long as Wade remains DC.

BTW, Gary should give Wade about 20% of the $$$$ he gets from his extention for saving Garys job. Manning deserves about 10% as well.

Jeff Fischer is the Rams new head coach.
To me this was a toss up for Fisher. I guess what probably made it easier is having Bradford who is a franchise type QB over the QB mess in Miami that has hung over since Marino retired.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Miami make a package deal with Minnesota (who is committed to Ponder already) to grab RG3.

I think the biggest reason Gary was retained last year was the uncertainty revolving around the Collective Bargaining agreement. McNair like some owners and GMs around the league felt like with what could be a lockout situationit would bode better to keep a staff on then start over. For a few teams like with coaches on the hot seat it paid off like us and Cinci.

I think had there not been that uncertainty Gary would've been fired and he knew it. I guess it came to him knowing his back was really against the wall it was time to go out and hire people with a winning track record on defense (like many of us had previously begged for) to save his job.

I still think if Bob made the call to fire him Cowher would've taken the job.

From what I'm reading, personnel control factored into the decision also. Miami was apparently not going to have Ireland relinquish much if any control in that area, and in St. Louis, it sounds like he'll have more involvement in personnel decisions, although probably still not complete control.

If you were a defensive coordinator worth a damn, & you had the opportunity to go to any team you wanted, which teams would be below Houston on your list?

If it weren't for Bum Phillips falling in love with Houston, I guarantee you we wouldn't have Wade Phillips.
