Keys To Beating Seattle

I've layed out the baisic gameplan, in which i feel will put our players in the best position to compete, and possibly win this Sunday Night, on ESPN against the hot Seattle Seahawks.

- Establish an effective run game early, and use it often. This will also help David Carr out on play-actions, by reducing the blitz some.

- Try various types on screen-passes, which will also kill the blitz. If Andre Johnson does play, have David throw him some swing passes, and with Andre's speed and ability, a solid gain would be possible.

- The only thing we can try and do with our defense agianst Seattle's offense is contain them. Try not to give up the big play. Rather, slow them down and, if anything, only to short gain passes.

-Stay confident/reduce the penalty amountages

By doing this, I feel, would give the Houston Texans the best chance to stay in this game with Seattle. However, with a little luck, i truly belive we will win our first game Sunday, I really do feel its going to happen.

i would rather see our defense get mean and agressive. im sick of this passive, scared defense. its like time to bring some guys and get after Hasselbeck.

Any time you can run with success you give your team a chance. With a yards per game of 123.8 there is some success with the run for the Texans ranking 11th in league. Seattle is only giving up an average of 108.4 per game on the ground however which includes games against the top rushing team Atlanta (W) and the sixth ranked Redskins (L). If you can keep the game close, using the running game to keep the Seahawks offense off the field, that would be a good strategy. Of course, Seattle will be trying to force you into giving up on the run early in possesions and in the game to get Houston into obvious passing situations where they can apply pressure. I would expect the Seahawks to crowd the line of scrimmage to stop the run and take away the under neath pass routes. Trying to force Houston to beat them with the deep ball if at all.

Then there is the question of how to defense Seattle with their very balanced attack. They are in the top ten in both passing and rushing offense. The strategy that seems to work is to make Seattle one dimensional. There are a variety of ways teams can do this depending on what they consider their strength or weakness, but you need to take away one or the other because if you allow the Seahawks to use their entire offensive playbook and weapons, Holmgren will chew up the clock and a defense.

You know the saying - On any given Sunday. Both teams get paid to play so anything is possible.

I think we need to make sure Ed Hocules isn't the official and keep the penalties to a minimum.

BTW-I did have Texans 17-14 over the west coast chickens on the prediction thread.

It doesn't matter if AJ plays or not Carr can't get him the ball.

The best chance for us to win this game is to BENCH Carr.

Throw Ragone in and see what he can do, it can't be any worst. We're already 0 - 4. The worse we could do is be 0 - 5. With Carr we're assured to be 0 - 5 record.

Sounds good!

Our priority has to be to protect DC and give him some time. By the same token, he's got to get rid of the ball if no one is open. No use taking a hit for a 1 yard play. But they've got to pick up the blitz, especially from the blind side.

Running the ball consistently is key, both in moving the LOS and taking time off of the clock. The more we have the ball, the less they have it.

I'd prefer to see a more mixed-up, aggressive defense. Put the Seahawks on their heels with a good sack and/or defensive turnover. Seize the game with pro-active playcalling, instead of bend-and-don't-break reaction D. Keep the pressure coming from different directions. Show us what we haven't seen in four games - A CAPERS DEFENSE!!

And definitely - from all the fans - luck and positive thoughts. Hopefully some good karma from the Astros, too.

Here's my complicated list of things the Texans need to do to win:

Allow 2 or fewer sacks.

Get 3 or more sacks.

Maybe they'll figure it out. I doubt it.

Not having AJ is no big blow to the team. He hasn't been an offensive weapon this season, so it's not like we're any deeper in the quick sand.

What it takes to win is trailblazing a path through Seattle. We have to control the field, like it's our own little piece of the world. Once we clear the field of Seattle football players, we will produce. We have to make it our swidden and dominate. That means get the turnovers. Prevent the sacks. Open the holes. Gaffney is stepping up. Dunta is stepping up. If we can get the rest of the team to join them, we might win a game!

How about just getting a turnover?

I actually think this is the game that we turn things around defensively.

The first win of the year is going to take mental toughness as much as anything. We need to start off strong, and then maintain our composure through the rough spots. In a couple of games this year we have started ok, but as soon a couple of mistakes or bad breaks happened we seemed to lose focus and start going through the motions. Like tin whiskers in sensitive electronics, early mistakes leech the competitiveness from this team.
